Thank you for the link. Also, I made it to a television in time to see the end of Q3 and the entire Q4. Saw some great defense by Stanford's line and secondary !
Sad to see Mills getting taped. If knee (s) were his previous high school injury I guess it's now a chronic thing which will limit his football career.

Great win. Defense got pressure. Mills is a stud. Fingers crossed for him. Our OL...wow.

Those frosh OL are for real. Please no more injuries, though!!

Scarlett ran as hard as any back in any Stanford game I've ever seen.  I was at the Astros awesome win tonight and could only catch snippets of our takedown of the Huskies on my phone.  Saw a bunch of heart in this team.  When Hattis went down, the young man who was "next up" filled in wih a massive block on the next play to allow Scarlett to battle his way into the endzone.  An inspirational performance, but the team is decimated by injuries.  I just don't know what can be reasonably expected the rest of the way.  At this point I love this team no matter what.  Tonight may not match the epic proportions of The Greatest Upset Ever, but it may provide a foundation for the players to visualize a bright future.

RE: UW Game Thread -- Stanford 23 - UW 13 - magnus - 10-05-2019

Anyone notice West limping after some handoffs and while walking back to the huddle?  Seems to have started after he got tackled on a scramble attempt during the next to last drive.

RE: UW Game Thread -- Stanford 23 - UW 13 - fullmetal - 10-06-2019

I started watching in the 2H.  Davis Mills looked like a D1 qb tonight, fitting throws into tight windows and making good, quick decisions.  I don't know if he had to make a lot of sophisticated reads, but he showed good touch on crossing routes and slants, which has been a fundamental weak spot for some time.  Scarlett did his best Gerhart/Gaffney impression with Gaffney on the sideline, grinding out first down after first down in the waning minutes to salt the game away.  Scarlett carried a small pile of humans multiple times for crucial YAC to bleed clock and gain yards.  Let's not forget the OL, who protected Mills in the first half and then began to assert their will in the second half, grinding out the UW DL to enable Scarlett in the 4Q.

Time of possession was won handily by Stanford, enabling the defense to rest up between appearances.  Multiple playmakers stepped up for the defense, but imo none as important as everyone rushing the passer.  I feel like the 25% of all pressures/sacks/knockdowns were due to good coverage, and the rest of the credit goes to the rushers and creative rushing schemes.  I'm not sure how the defense was able to party in the backfield as they did, but that was a throwback performance (afterparty in the backfield!).

Speaking of throwback performances, when was the last time Stanford was able to use the run effectively to put the game away?  Nine plays, 29 yards, ~5 minutes of clock...all runs.  Shaw eventually punted on 4th and 2, but there were only 54 sec left on the clock by then, and UW had no remaining timeouts.  Cam Scarlett carried a pile of tacklers yard after yard and really gutted out those first downs.  You might say the legend of Cam Scarlett can be summed up by that drive...he just carried the team there (again, enabled by OL).

But Mills was injured, Hattis is out for a significant amount of time, and we're looking at starting three true frosh on the OL and maybe the third string QB (it's Westworld now).  The future is murky.  But tonight, and for the bye week to come, this Stanford team became who they thought they could be.

I just got done watching the game here this morning.    A few comments on injuries:

RE: UW Game Thread -- Stanford 23 - UW 13 - OutsiderFan - 10-06-2019

Davis Mills is what I thought he was when recruited. Best QB I've seen wear a Stanford uniform on a football field since Luck.

The TD to Fehoko was a blown coverage, yes, but the pass was a laser.

The long corner throw to Wedington on 2nd and 19 for 18 yards, on the run, was the best I've seen in a long time. And he was drilling other passes too.  Not to be overlooked was the touch and timing on the screen passes.

Costello is a good QB.  Mills looks like a first round draft pick. Really fluid athlete, quick release, quick feet, great arm, with accuracy, zip and touch.  Want to see him have to play against some zone defenses, to see how he reads them, but he seems to have everything you want in a QB. This team could have a lot more upside will Mills at QB.

That’s a good line. It is what Shaw wants to do.  Slowly squeeze the life out of the opponent.  It ain’t pretty. But it’s been remarkably successful.  They just haven’t had the o-line to do it. Obviously o-line is key to any offense. But to Shaw’s style it’s that much more important.

This game reminded me a little on 2013 Oregon,  which is interesting given Gaffney‘s pregame talk etc.   The Oregon game was a little more run oriented -  I think Gaffney carried it 45 times. But in both games the offense consistently sustained long drives. brobdingnagian TOP difference. Often a meaningless stat. But not for Stanford.

agree with the above, but Mills also does the little things that make plays work better.  good ball fakes on play action, same on PRO, the shoulder pump on the Fehoko TD throw, etc.  fun to watch.  many of these elements have been absent for years.

hopefully it is a tweak.  Shaw in post-game played down the injury, basically he said he could have played but they decided to sit him for precautionary reasons.

Agree completely.  He also made a nice shoulder pump fake on the TD pass. (Kudos to Scarlett for stoning the guy blitzing off the edge).   And he is just going to get better – if he can stay healthy. In fact you’ve seen his accuracy improve from SC to Washington. I think that’s just a matter of repetitions. Ball gets out of his hand quick. Accurate. He’s decisive.  Can gun it. Has touch. Good pocket presence. The real deal.  If he can just stay healthy.

I started watching all the Stanford games 3 years ago. I saw Hogan play only a couple of games. If it's not too much trouble, would you (or any other participant here) please write a few sentences comparing Hogan's style of QB play versus Mills. I realize Mills has only been on the field for 3.5 games, but am still interested to read comparisons.

I would like to watch more of Mills play, but it seems like he is skilled at viewing downfield and considering multiple receivers.

Hogan's release was not quick. He was pretty mobile and quite durable, but he didn't throw that well on the run, in part because he had to kind of wind up to throw. Whatever Hogan lacked in pure QB talent, he made up for with a knack for making plays when they were needed.

If I were to rank the Stanford QBs since Luck, just in terms of physical talent and ability, it would be:

1. Mills
2. Hogan
3. Costello
4. Nunes
5. Burns
6. Chryst

When I saw West get in the UW game, he made me think of Chryst, complete with same number.  A big guy with not a lot of athleticism. Hopefully he is more accurate, but man do I not want to see West have to play, just based on that brief glimpse. Hoping Mills can lead to McKee, who might be #2 if slid on to this list.

Absolutely right. I’m not as down on Costello as some here, but it is clear that he is not very good at executing play fakes (or any other kind of fake).  Even when we ran play action pass with Costello, which was less than with other quarterbacks, the fake hand-off always seemed perfunctory; he was not good at “selling” it at all.  Luck (especially), Hogan, and now Mills, are very good at selling the fake handoff.  And yeah, Mills also had that nice shoulder fake.

One of those “little things” that helped the running game immensely last night was when he established the keeper on the read-option twice in the first quarter for big gains. They had to respect it for the rest of the game.

Very true. That probably was NOT expected by UW (It certainly was not expected by me!) and maybe made them adjust in an unplanned way. Always a good thing!

On one of those plays, the camera operator followed Scarlett for about 10 yards as he scampered to the left side.  Meanwhile, Mills was running around the right corner and up the sideline.  Very good fake.

I was going to mention that too.  And Scarlett played his role, there was plenty of pursuit.

Didn't we do that against the weenies 2 years ago? After a pick in the middle of the 4th quarter, I recall we ran the ball for the last 8 minutes or so to bleed the clock and not give the ball back.

Speaking of fakes, West was TERRIBLE at faking a carry after he handed off to a running back.  He always slowed up to look back at the action.  WTF?  Why don't you keep up with your fake?
