10:00 am PT Sunday match against #8 Kentucky. Undergraduate classes start Monday the following day.
Going back to the topic of Nebraska players wearing leggings. I don't know of any advantage athletically. They are more comfortable appearance-wise than the traditional skimpy spandex shorts. I expect the trend may go in this direction. The only reason I know of for the traditional spandex shorts is because male viewers like them which is not a good reason.
A long time ago at a JC tournament I saw a team from Santa Barbara City College wearing baggy, knee-length, Hawaiian shorts.
After the match, Nebraska players said they thought the leggings worked out well on Stanford’s hardwood floor.

Nebraska fell from #6 to #12.
Stanford should be higher, IMO.
And not sure what Washington has done to earn their #6 ranking.

Pretty sure people see a team with a 5-3 record and that probably figures into it, compared to some teams who might have fewer losses. The strength of schedule argument probably doesn't overcome the overall record.

Teams ranked 9-10-11 have three losses so that’s not it. Lazy don’t care there’s two reasons

Why exactly do we care at this point what the ranking is? Sure, toward the end of the season it might make a difference in seeding, but, given what's happened this season to a number of teams, given that Stanford needs to keep improving as it plays through its conference season, and given that there are almost certainly going to be a few obviously good teams with better records than Stanford's at the end of the regular season, these early rankings are arguably kind of meaningless.

In what I consider to be a more realistic rankings poll, today's Volleytalk Top 25+ poll has the following for PAC 12 teams (shown with their OOC results vs. other Top 25+ teams per Volleytalk poll):
#11 - Washington (L @ #5 Ohio State 1-3, W @ #24 Pepperdine 3-1)
#12 - Stanford (W vs. #20 Florida 3-1, L @ #2 Texas 0-3, L vs. #7 Minnesota 1-3, W vs. #21 Penn State 3-2, W vs. #14 Nebraska 3-1, L @ #6 Kentucky 2-3)
#13 - Oregon (W vs. #21 Penn State 3-0, L vs. #7 Minnesota 2-3)
#16 - Utah (W vs. #23 San Diego, 3-1, W @ #14 Nebraska 3-2, L @ #28 Boise State 1-3, L @ #10 BYU)
#18 - UCLA (W vs. #17 Georgia Tech 3-1, L @ #23 San Diego 2-3)
#22 - Colorado (No matches vs Top 25+ teams)
and the 3 Big Guns that Stanford beat (Florida, Penn State, Nebraska) are all ranked below Stanford, and rightfully so:
#14 - Nebraska
#20 - Florida
#21 - Penn State
At this point, I concur with BostonCard's assessment (which he made in the WVB: #16 Stanford @ #8 Kentucky message thread) that Stanford would be a 3-seed if the NCAA Tournament seedings were determined right now.
Stanford is, by far, the most battle tested in OOC schedule among PAC 12 teams, and we can see the gleaming POTENTIAL of this team, especially with the further development of both FRANCIS at OH/OPP and MINER at Setter, to eventually dominate PAC 12 play.
Based on her first 2 collegiate matches, a baptism of fire vs. big guns Nebraska and Kentucky, I can see why FRANCIS was #2 (VolleyMag)/#5 (PrepVolley) overall recruit from the Class of 2021. Same thing with MINER as #4 (PrepVolley)/#5 (VolleyMag) overall recruit from the Class of 2021, after setting Stanford through its entire brutal OOC schedule.
With respect to PAC 12 play, it's almost like an IDEAL PROGRESSION for Stanford in the first half of its PAC 12 schedule:
- 4 home matches (2nd match vs. #18 UCLA next Sunday, 9/26),
- 2 road matches (6th match vs. #13 Oregon),
- 2 home matches (7th match vs. #14 Utah, 8th match vs. #22 Colorado),
- 2 road matches (10th match vs. #11 Washington)
RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball: it starts today - Softball Fan - 09-20-2021
Random Thoughts:
Francis was much better IMO in her second match; more confident, more mature demeanor.
Oglivie made some spectacular digs against Kentucky. I feel the back row players are the glue holding everything together.
Positioning of middles and pins for blocks is painful to watch. It can only get better.
L. Smith did not move well in the scrimmage and quickly re-injured her knee. If she is willing I would consider red-shirting her and only burn it this season in event of injury. I don't know how long Baird wants to hang around the Farm but she has freshman athletic eligibility and can go another three seasons after 2021.
Hambly is an excellent coach. The only thing I would do differently is sub out Kipp and Baird serving in critical situations. I know they bring firepower from the back row, but Stanford can not afford to give away free points on serve near the end of close sets.
While Cal is a pretty good team they have feasted on cupcakes for the most part in non-conference. Cal is not in the same league as the last six teams Stanford has played. I'm hoping things come easy for the Cardinal at Maples on Wednesday so some bench players get time on the court.

Good thoughts paloalto. Only thing I would add is we need to work on our service game. Too many sideouts on service errors.

Hambly has stated he wants 90% of serves in play. He wants hard serves he coaches hard serves. VS Kentucky 89% were in play. I also groan especially when the serve is long but this is Stanford Volleyball. And it works.
On the rankings I dislike the holdover from last season somehow counts.
Baird is a 3rd year soph who plans to play a 5th year at Stanford
Trivia who was the back up setter vs Kentucky?

You are right; Kentucky (#7), Minnesota (#9), Baylor (#10), and Nebraska (#12) are all 3-loss teams ranked higher than we are. Of course, two out of the four own the head-to-head win against us, so it is really only being ranked behind Nebraska that chaps. Maybe also Baylor, who lost to Tennessee (it's other losses are to #2 Wisconsin, and #7 Pittsburgh), but, like us also has wins against Minnesota and Florida.

Hmm. Not Xu? I thought at first the idea behind your question was that it couldn't be Xu because she came in as a serving sub for a middle and therefore couldn't have come in for Miner, so it would have to have been one of our other setters. But I don't see Xu in the box score or play-by-play for Kentucky. I remember Berty came in as a serving sub.
I wonder who the backup setter is when Xu does come in as a serving sub. Of course Tufuga and Greene are both setters. Fidelak did some setting last year and in practices, but is injured right now.

I don't have as much problem with the number of missed serves as the timing. Here's an example. In the first set against Kentucky when Stanford had 23 points Kipp served the ball into the middle of the net. Then at 24 points Baird served the ball ten feet long. Missing on set point is one of the seven volleyball sins of serving.

Where am I going wrong in my calculations. In 2019 Baird redshirted. In the 2020 season, played in the spring of 2021, Baird played but I thought that doesn't count toward eligibility.
So it seems this is Baird's first season counting against eligibility.

Tufuga was the back up setter
Xu wasn’t dressed for the Game. Greene wasn’t at the game. A friend tells me Greene wasn’t present for the end of the Nebraska game.
Xu danced a bit during the Kentucky game so there’s that
The timing of the service errors can suck. Especially those two late 5th set
Palo Alto nice post up above
As for Baird would she stay for her 6th academic year? That’s iffy

U18 World Championships started this week. USA beat Thailand 3-0 today; video link above. There are two 2023 recruited players on the roster. Alisha Glass Childress is the Assistant Coach.
Maggie Mendelson (MB, 6'5") #24 USA jersey. Looks quicker and more mobile than I expected.
Julia Blyashov (OH, 6'3") #19 USA jersey.
While I’m on the topic of recruited players:
Elia Rubin (OH, 6-1, 2022) committed to Stanford. Listed at 6’1”; looks closer to 6’0”. Based on the below videos IMO doesn’t look like a player who will crack the starting lineup at Stanford. Joe, what am I missing?

On Rubin...
https://www.prepdig.com/2020/05/2022-ranking-breakdown-top-5-slam-dunk-outside-hitters/
Quote:Seeded at number one on the ranking list is Elia Ruben. Standing at a dominant 6’0 her gritty court presence and fast arm swing helped lead her high school team (Marymount High School) to the SoCal State semi-finals. She tallied a total of 420 kills, 44 aces, 44 blocks, and 241 digs. Her performance during the 2019 high school season landed her a spot on the MaxPreps High School All-American list and Nike TOC MVP Honors. Although Rubin is still uncommitted, she will definitely be a great addition to any collegiate roster.
You can follow the discussion of Rubin in this Texas recruiting volleytalk thread.
