RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - martyup - 11-26-2021

Jump is not in for the final possession.  Wilson took the floor???  Demetre throws up a 3 that misses everything.  We lose.  Can't win scoring 54 points, shooting 35% for the game.  Can't win getting out rebounded 38-52.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - M T - 11-26-2021

I hope this tastes SO bad that the team comes out really strong tomorrow.  Don't forget our opponent also lost their last game. Both teams will have something to prove.  Will we be the better team?

Whatcha think the team will do this PM?
Sleep?  Play on the water slide?  Practice FTs?

Where would we be without Brink?! Haley specifically needs to step up along with others.

I don’t understand that either.   You need shooters on the floor not defenders at that time.   Wonder who starts tomorrow.  These ladies must be tired.   Free throw shooting is killing us.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - martyup - 11-26-2021

Jones with zero points in 31 minutes.  She shot 0-6.  That wouldn't be so bad if she had a lot of assists, but she had only 3.

Brink had a double double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.  But, she fumbled a lot of rebounds that she normally would have controlled.

I saw a team that played like they were tired and lacked passion.  USF wanted it more, and they got it.

I really think that Tara is experimenting with lineups to determine floor chemistry.  Unless there were disciplinary reasons for sitting Belibi and Prechtel, I see no other explanation to their minimal playing time today.  With Wilson I can understand based on her performances leading up to this game.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - 81alum - 11-26-2021

I did not understand the composition of the players on the floor for the last play.  Was it that Tara could not substitute to put Jump and Prechtel in for their three point shooting?

Overall, a very disappointing day in numerous categories.  And we have only one day to get our act together to play Maryland tomorrow.

But, Demetre's play is encouraging, and Brink continues to perform well.

The physical pushing and shoving under the basket that the refs let go helped Brink not foul out, but it also let Mavunga get 23 rebounds, including 8 offensive.  I think the rebounding advantage they had was decisive.

We had fewer turnovers than they did.  Surprising.

I don't understand why Belibi played for only 3 minutes nor, for that matter, why Jones played for 31.

So many questions.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - TheFarm07 - 11-26-2021

I know Tara will be gracious and PC with her public comments and in the press conference, but I really hope she is super upset with the team behind closed doors.

This was a game that we should not have lost. Many of these mistakes are under our control; even with Kiana's departure, this is not how a defending national champion should start the season with everyone but 1 starter back.

Even in our victories, we did not look good; the same issues continue to plague us and a lot of Tara's personnel choices continue to confound

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - petersalas - 11-26-2021

Hopefully have some fun.. I’ll pout for them.. and hope they get over this game and just get better.. especially in areas they can control, FREE THROWS. Tomorrow is another opportunity to beat a ranked team and hopefully start a long win streak.

And we will probably scratch our heads trying to figure them out. Tara is pretty tight-lipped about these things and the press too often lobs softball questions at her, rather then asks her more difficult ones.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - here4WBB - 11-26-2021

If you check the Stanford full box score for the game, Jana VGB is not listed on the team roster.  Is this only because she did not play any minutes or something else?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - M T - 11-26-2021

Regarding the opponent ORs:

An opponent can do what Stanford usually does:
 1)  When your team's shot goes up, you turn around and hustle back on defense
or 2) You compete for the rebound.  If the defending team is used to not having to block out for DR, then you can do really well.

Since we almost never fast break, they chose (2) and it worked for them.

It appeared to me that they were pushing the Stanford rebounders deep under the basket so as to give themselves a good position, but I didn't specifically watch for that.  Just an impression until I see the (partial) replay.

Yeah, this far you get the impression while we can beat most teams we play there are a lot of teams that can beat us too.
Like you say not what you would expect from the defending national champion with all but one starter back.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - 81alum - 11-26-2021

Here is a thought: If we are going to lose a game on a three pointer from 6 feet beyond the arc, I am glad it happened here than on the shot taken by Aari McDonald last March.

I reviewed a couple of plays at the end that I recorded off the live feed.

On Sydney Harvey's winning shot, it was a designed play.  Anna followed her all the way out and the defense was not bad, but Harvey side stepped and got a bit free before she took the shot.  It was not off-balance, just long.  A well executed play.

On the traveling call, Demetre absolutely traveled.  Four steps I think.

That's looking at the bright side of things (on your 1st point), but with all due respect to South Florida, it shouldn't have come down to losing by a three pointer 6 feet from the arc.

It should have been South Florida heaving that three pointer at the end of the game because they were out of time and we were up by 15.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - martyup - 11-26-2021

I trust Tara completely.  She absolutely knows what she is doing and knows these players better than anyone.  I can't wait to read her book in a few years when she explains how she made the sausage.

I could speculate and say that perhaps she wanted to show Brink that she cannot do it all herself and needs the other bigs in the game to help the team.  Perhaps she was challenging Demetre to prove she should be a starter on this team.  Perhaps she was sending a message to Wilson that she must produce on the floor or sit on the bench.  Perhaps she was signaling to Jones that she trusts her and wants her to play through her slump.

Whatever the reasons, I trust that they were carefully considered by Tara.  Tara might not have valued a win today as much as she values the lessons learned by the team and her staff in today's loss.  As fans, we put a high value on winning every game.  But there is much more going on than probably any of us realize.

I can't wait to see what the Wizard of Palo Alto has in store for this team tomorrow.

Absolutely.  The game was lost really in the first half.  19 points in a half is really inexcusable.  That is on the low end for a quarter for us.  We did better in the third quarter and actually tied them in the 4th.

Free throw shooting continues to be bad.  We left 8 points on the table with those misses.  Even hitting 50% of our free throws would have been enough for the win.

The biggest story coming out of the game, though, is that something is wrong with Jones.  If Jones is her old self, then we easily win.  But we can't lose both Williams and Jones from our offense.

I am also worried about Lexie.  Her slump continues.  We need the old Lexie back, along with the old Jones.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - BillBradley - 11-26-2021

Hmmmm....

- Crazy finish. We take the lead and Cam misses 2 bunnies, which she normally makes with ease. But we keep possession. Then a great read by Cam to hit Lacie who knocked down a brobdingnagian three. Then Cam with the block at the other end. Then Demetre misses a FT (not to single her out as the team was awful at the line again). Harvey hits a deep 3 over Anna. We advance it, still have time, Demetre travels. Ball game. Then they actually give us another chance by making both ft's and letting us advance it - wasn't that a brobdingnagian mistake instead of intentionally missing the 2nd? But we couldn't get a good shot off. Dang.
- It's clear that Tara is experimenting and searching for productive combinations. This is the time to do it. Just a bummer we lost this one. I really like what Demetre gives us. We are a way different team with Jump and Demetre on the court. Spreads the court, opens it up inside. And hitting 3's is an absolute must in today's game. However, 28 minutes and riding Demetre to the finish line seemed to much to me with our veterans (e.g. Lexie) on the bench.
- Don't think we have anywhere near the whole story on Haley. She is looking like she has the yips out there. Badly missing layups, airballs, etc. This isn't some young player - this is the National Champion MVP and our team leader. Tara's comments after yesterday's win were puzzling. "She's doing great" after a rough game seems like a show of support for something she's going through. Not sure I'm buying the illness or an injury. You don't sit on the bench next to everyone if you're sick and there aren't a lot of injuries (like a jammed finger) that allow you to play 50+ minutes in 24 hours. Certainly not an ankle or hip injury. And the fact that Tara is leaving her out there while she is struggling leads me to believe she's letting her play through something. Whatever it is might also be affecting the team. Their morale is way down, not a lot of smiles from generally a happy bunch. Haley brings happiness and energy and we just don't have it.
- It's gotta be tough for Belibi, Prechtel, Lexie, Wilson to have their PT yoyo-ing all over the place. I sort of understand some of what Tara was doing today, but the Jones mystery leaving her in the game and sitting Lexie most of the 4th was very puzzling. I can see bringing in some offensive potency with Jump/Demetre but once we caught them I would have liked Lexie back on the court earlier in the 4th. When she finally does sub in she immediately impacts the game, locking down her player and generating those "Lextra possessions".
- As others have mentioned, missed free throws are killing us. They asked Tara in one of her press conferences what she would do about that and she brushed it off saying something like "it's hard to focus on it because then it gets in the players' heads". A little smiling and relaxing would help.

On to the Terps. If we take them down and go 2-1 on this road trip, that's not bad.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am - jonnyss - 11-26-2021

the end of the game was very strange.  2 plays in a row designed for demetre, and she botched both of them. granted, she played the entire 2nd half and did quite well at first.  i am guessing tara wanted to try demetre out, give her a chance in prime time. probably will help later in the season.

i agree with others that, for that last-second shot, having a lineup of 3-point shooters: jump, prechtel, wilson, jana, demetre would give us a better chance of victory.

a downside of playing brook and haley together is that haley moved out to the 3 and hardly touched the ball. also mununga, playing the 4 for usf, had 23 rebounds. we held her in check on offense, but using demetre at the 4 is not going to get us rebounds against a quick player like mununga.

as the game went on, cam did better at kicking the ball out when triple-teamed. yielded a 3 by lacie.

i can't wait for lexie's scoring slump to end.

Hey, Dayton mbb just beat Kansas at home. Now, that's an upset. Tara's lineups interesting. Obviously there's purpose to the madness. Are we ok with Lacie at pg? Still tbd?

I haven't seen a better option yet.  Coach has to make a decision from what is available.
