RE: Cristobal leaving Oregon - Austroturf - 12-12-2021

My interpretation is that Wilcox considers Cal a more secure position: Oregon wants the moon; Cal is happy with the occasional bowl season and a victory over Stanford.  Perhaps he just thought there was more upside to expectations at Cal.

Contrast this coaching path with Pritchard's, who is one year younger (34), was hired as a graduate assistant in 2010 at Stanford (Harbaugh's last year), had a number of assistant roles on defense and offense, became OC after the 2017 season and has been in that role for 4 years now.  Would any program of Oregon's caliber be looking to hire Tavita as head coach?  With the number of coaching slots being filled right now in Division 1 football, the answer is a clear "no".

Maybe Lanning will be a bust at Oregon, and the young gun will be run out of Eugene after two seasons.  But the point I have been hammering on for the last three seasons is the caliber of Shaw's staff: it does not measure up to the best coaching staffs in the country; and unless that is fixed, we will not see any significant improvement.

And will Georgia be looking to poach Lance Anderson to replace Lanning?  Not a chance.

The mediocrity that is Stanford's coaching staff starts at the top.  And may end there, though I doubt that.

It will be fascinating to hear what Wilcox says when asked why he turned Oregon down to stay at Cal.

It's hilarious. Cal fans been calling for Wilcox's head on a pike when they were 1-5. They then right the ship a bit, beat Stanford and USC, Wilcox turns down Oregon, and now Cal fans have higher esteem.

Wilcox is getting some concessions from the Cal administration as a condition of him staying put. If he turned down the Ducks to stay in Berkeley, you can bet they are things that will make Cal more competitive. That likely means larger assistant salary budget, lower entrance requirements for recruits, perhaps some policy shifts to help with transfer portal. Maybe more.

Wilcox turned down Oregon abd I still believe in Santa Claus

If Wilcox turned down Oregon, maybe something is rotten in Eugene.

You think that the “multiple sources” are all friends of Wilcox trying to help him leverage something out of Cal?

Maybe he turned down Oregon because he knows he has something better in the works.  The college coaching carousel is settling down now, but the NFL one is just about to get started.

I just can't imagine an alum of a school like Oregon would opt to stay at Cal.  Oregon offers better pay for the HC and his assistants and has better football facilities and NIL potential for the players.   Any one of those benefits should have been enough...if this story was really true.

Maybe Wilcox just doesn't like the rain, or doesn't want to have to report to Knight.

Or maybe when interviewed he did indeed feel Oregon had cut loose from it's roots and had lost it's soul. If what we hear about the former player's letter is anywhere near true, that thought is out there. If you participate in an interview and get a very bad vibe about the institution it may make lots of sense to stay put.

Anybody remember the great Stan Ferberg skit with Jack Webb?

“I ain’t too sure about the Easter Bunny.”

Not that skit, but makes a point at 22:34 that certainly still applies 53 years later.

I see that logic for a non-alum, but I would think an alum from the program would see "his" program is drifting and would realize that he is the perfect person to bring back Oregon winning the Oregon way by an Oregon Man.

Oh well, if Oregon offered it would suggest that other programs realize if a coach can get Cal close to .500 football then that coach might be able to win big at a place without a mountain of debt and more community support.

RE: Cristobal leaving Oregon - Papa John - 12-14-2021

By my count, Oregon is now up to 8 decommits since Cristobal left. The most recent was a three-star TE who flipped to WSU.

As a sign of how weak Pac-12 recruiting has been up to this point, Oregon is still ranked 2nd in the conference with only 11 commits. Stanford is hanging on to 1st despite losing four-star Ramsey. We'll see how the transfer portal works out.

I expect that when all is said and done in February, Lincoln Riley will have worked some magic for USC. Not so sure about Lanning and the Ducks.
