I think you just did. Ouch! What is the protocol? Can Jones take back his commit to U$C and look elsewhere? Is there any formal document signed at this point or is it all a "gentleman's agreement"? Do you "exit" the portal when you commit?

Bummer. Should have stayed for the degree.

And BTW I don't see any reason Stanford should welcome pregraduate transfers back to finish their degree. Austin will be fine with an SC degree if he chooses to complete it.

On transfers you appear to be able to change your mind until you actually enroll,

Quote:Transfers don't sign any paperwork that binds them to the school they choose, though, and because Gabriel hasn't enrolled at UCLA, he is able to change his decision.

I assume (but don't know) that it is the same for a school, they can decide they aren't taking you until you have actually enrolled

So what's the best play for Austin Jones?

Stay at USC and get limited PT as RB2 unless Dye gets hurt?
Reenter the portal and hope for greener pastures as RB1?
Return to Stanford and, like the prodigal son, proclaim "Coach, I have sinned against heaven and Stanford" and beg for his schollie back?

I'm assuming that AJ is currently enrolled at Stanford and in good standing, since he only entered the portal last week.

Great question. I don't think Shaw is gonna welcome him back after this.

If he were to re-enter the portal, he could certainly find another P5 school to be RB1 at. He's a West Coast guy, so I'd guess he'll still want to stick around. Oregon State and Wazzu both lose their RB1 and offered.

FWIW, Nathaniel Peat is already enrolled at Mizzou and was officially announced by the team as a transfer. That move made perfect sense for him (sans the degree).

Can't a player simply apply credits from the transfer institution, finish at Stanford and receive a Stanford degree? this is what some players did in the past, e.g. Tim Carey transferred to Hawaii, finished his football career there, but completed his academic career at Stanford and received his degree. As long as more than half the required credits were earned at Stanford you could do this in the past. If it's still the case then there's obviously even less incentive to eschew transferring since the "40 Year Decision" still holds except for a brief football playing detour elsewhere. Perhaps someone on the board knows what the current rules are.

RE: Austin Jones to the portal (to U$C) - Papa John - 01-21-2022

Mizzou didn't start spring classes until two days ago, January 18, so it makes sense that Peat would be able to enroll for spring semester in Columbia and proceed full steam ahead. In fact, from his Twitter thread it sounds like he may have made it in time for the start of classes.

First day of instruction at USC was 8 days earlier, on January 10, so even if Jones moves this weekend, he'll have missed the first two weeks of the semester. Not a great way to start at a new school, IMO.

For a non grad transfer like Jones, does Stanford immediately revoke their scholarships when they announce that they are entering the portal? That doesn't sound like something that Shaw would do. So the only difference here is that Jones committed to another school, but high school recruits flip commitments all of the time, and I'm sure it's happened in the transfer portal with other teams. And even if Jones has withdrawn from Stanford, the scholarship is still there and I'm sure that there is a way to get reinstated assuming he left in good standing.

In any case, most schools have started their spring terms by now--WSU on January 10, OSU on January 3. So re-entering the portal may have academic consequences for Jones.

I don't think it would ever happen, but maybe, given this late date, the best play for Jones would be to decommit from USC and come back to Stanford, and for Shaw to welcome back the prodigal son.

My guess is that Jones will stick with USC. He had to have known before he committed that Riley would continue to pursue RBs given that the Trojans don't really have much depth in the RB room.

Quote:
  • Undergraduates who have completed (or plan to complete) course work at a non-Stanford, regionally accredited college or university may request an evaluation for transfer credit. External coursework may be considered for transfer credit if all of the following conditions are met:
    • The course work is completed at a regionally accredited institution.
    • The course work is substantially similar to Stanford courses.
    • The final grade posted for each potential transfer course is a 'C-' grade (or better).
    • The course work does not duplicate, overlap, or regress previous work.
    • The university or college offering the courses allows these courses to be used for credit towards its own undergraduate degree.
    • The course work did not count towards secondary school diploma and/or graduation requirements.
    • No more than 45 (90 for transfer students) quarter units of credit for work done elsewhere may be counted toward a bachelor's degree at Stanford.
Transfer work can be used to satisfy a department major or minor requirement. The transfer work must first be officially accepted into the University through the Office of the University Registrar. After the transfer credit has been approved and posted by the Office of the University Registrar, the departments determine if the approved transfer work can be used to satisfy a department major or minor requirement. Students should contact their departments directly for additional details regarding departmental transfer credit policies.

https://registrar.stanford.edu/students/transfer-credit-and-advanced-placement/transfer-credit-policies

of course one complication could be junior and senior year required courses (and maybe some other unique Stanford undergrad required courses) that may or may not be given at the other University

According to the Stanford Bulletin, graduation requirements for the BA/BS include:

Quote:Students admitted as freshmen—A minimum of 135 units (including the last quarter in residence) at Stanford. In special cases, students who have earned at least 135 units in resident work may petition for a waiver of the last quarter-in-residence requirement for up to 15 units through the Last Units Out of Residence petition.

So it's possible for Jones to transfer to USC and still graduate from Stanford, but only if he has accrued 135 units of Stanford credit through 7 academic quarters, AP credits and summer school. But for a normal load, that would be 9 quarters/3 years of residency.

RE: Austin Jones to the portal (to U$C) - 81alum - 01-21-2022

When I was a student at Stanford I transferred some credits from a couple of different colleges in, and it was not easy.  Some of the credits were denied since there was no equivalent course at Stanford, one was denied because Boise State (where I completed an internship while home for a summer) was not considered rigorous enough by the poli sci people looking over the syllabus.

I have no idea whether things are easier now, but my experience is that transferring credits into Stanford is not easy or reliable.  I was advised to seek approval for every course I took elsewhere before I took it.

I read it as the cap for students admitted as frosh is 45 units elsewhere, so if he either has at least 135 units when he leaves, or he returned and took enough classes to get to 135 units and/or whatever he needs to graduate (he may have <135 when he leaves, or he may need more than 135 Stanford units to graduate if he earns  <45 units elsewhere, or the other University may not have all the required course for his Stanford major or ...) he could graduate with a Stanford degree (assuming the last quarter in residence is either met (whenever he might return) or waived.

that's a little different from my transfer experience in 1979 where I got to bring all 51 units with me from Georgia Tech without any real effort other than submitting a transcript from GT.  But all those classes had pretty directly comparable classes at Stanford.  I would guess that for sophomore and especially junior and senior year classes the acceptance of the classes might be more difficult.

Ooofta. Travis Dye is really good.

Jones can always pull a Gabriel and transfer again….

Point Loma needs a running back.

If Dye is coming to USC, Jones should go to Oregon.

That's nuts.  I was able to transfer in credits for summer courses from Portland State University.  Chemistry and Computer Science.  The chemistry class was a joke compared to Stanford courses.  It was like my public high school.

Let’s at least wait until they play a game.  I realize Lincoln Riley is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  But bread can get moldy….

Agree. U$C has always had lots of talent. Translating that to success on the field has not always been easy. It appears that the "Air Raid" fiasco at tailback U is over with. It never made sense (IMHO) to voluntarily become one dimensional when you could reliably recruit multi-dimensional talent. I do think that U$C could be greatly improved next year. To what extent that will lead to multiple PAC-12 South titles and CFP invites is very much TBD.
