For years now our death knell has been zone defenses on days our treys are not dropping. We are very fortunate to come out of this with a win.
While much credit goes to Iriafen, Jones in the 4th, and Emma-Nnopu who was the first person to cool off Paopao, we need to realize that our defense was actually quite solid in 3 out of 4 of the quarters, giving up 14, 22, 11, and 15. Chalk up this win to defense and some late game heroics. Getting Oregon to make 16 turnovers compared with 8 of our own was critical to the win.
Sabally was held to 8 points, Rogers to 10. Paopao, however, was almost our undoing. Wilson and Lacie tried to control her but Emma-Nnopu finally cooled her down in the 4th.
I agree with what others have said about Jones. It seems she is at her best when under pressure--when she has to create for herself.
To the question of why Jump did not play more--it was defense. Jump could not guard Rogers or Paopao, and she got backed down to the rim by the taller wings she tried to guard. Just a bad matchup day for her.
Belibi looked pretty good, but Iriafen looked better today--at least on offense. I wondered why Tara left Brink in for as much time in the second half as she did. Brink had clearly been coached before the start of the game to take short jumpers against the zone, but they were not going in for her.
Finally, a shout out to Lexie, going 7/7 from the free throw line. Also critical.
And whoever said we were the beneficiaries of some questionable calls--we were. The announcers thought so too a couple of times. But Brink had at least one phantom call on her--one can only hope that referee incompetence evens out. Still, overall, we took 24 free throws and Oregon took 14. That certainly helped our cause.

I too thought we were toast late when we were down ten but dang, glad I was not reading this board with all the pinning losses on this person or that. Irafen was great but she needs a blow now and then and it was certainly reasonable to think Brink could play much better, as Jones certainly did. All that said, Jones took over the game and was fantastic late, Iriafen was excellent, and Emma-Nnopu was as well on offense and defense, and just plain hustle. I think it helped a lot that Sabally fouled out. She was hurting us inside all game. It was a tough, physical game that Oregon was clearly sky high for on Senior Day. Our shooting stunk all game, just a bad day, not really anyone's fault. But snuck out a big W. Great stuff.

Here is what SI makes of it:
Quote:Oregon Falls Apart in Fourth as No. 2 Stanford Escapes with 66-62 Win
The Ducks surrendered 12 second-chance points, turned the ball over nine times, and were dominated in the paint 22-4 in the fourth quarter alone.

Is that really SI or just a Ducks spot on there? Seems rather Oregon centered...

I think it is indeed an Oregon fan board somehow linked through SI. It really was a pretty comprehensive meltdown for Oregon at the end. All those turnovers.

Graves presser. At the end he breaks down as he thanks his staff for doing a great job preparing for the Stanford game while he was away being a dad. It sure humanizes him.

On the audio feed from gostanford. It was on the court/sideline.

there was a big non-call on oregon late in the game when haley threw the ball to cam on the left block, and it went out of bounds because cam was being held from behind.
also a bad call against lexie when she and an oregon player both dove for the ball. lexie got there first and the oregon player landed on top of her, yet lexie got whistled.
espn wbb page right now features a clip of haley's falling down shot.

If we meet UO again in the Pac-12 tournament, which is quite possible, Graves will likely use the same game plan, as it very nearly worked. Will be interesting to see what counters we have to get Jump and JVG more involved. We can't just concede that they have been neutralized schematically and say, "OK, we'll just have to win with our other players."

I wouldn't be surprised to see the falling down basket by Jones make the Sports Center Top 10 tonight.
Geaux Cardinal!

They could have, and probably should have, waived off the continuation on Jones’ basket. It was definitely a foul, but seems like the shot was after the foul.

The contrast between the men’s game yesterday and the women’s game today is stark. Yesterday, the men melted in the second half of a game they were favored to win. Today, the women came from behind in the fourth quarter. Yes, it was a game they were favored to win, but has the men’s basketball team ever come back from 10 down under 10 minutes left?

The continuation was one thing; it also looked like she moved her feet as she was falling. I wonder if they can't call the travel if they've already called the foul? Anyone know the rules on that?

Of course they have...when we defeated the Rhode Island Rams in 1998.

I believe they would just wave off the continuation versus officially call a travel after the foul

and didn't they do that in one minute or so? That's why I'm never comfortable with a 10-point lead with a minute left.

And also in 2004, coming back from 15 down vs Oregon with 10:31 remaining.

That season had a lot of incredible comebacks and last-second shots for MBB.

Yeah, no traveling after a foul. They would just waive off the continuation.
LOL about Rhode Island. The kids playing now weren’t even born when we had that comeback (“and he was fouled!”) which only makes the depths that Stanford MBB has fallen ever more stark.
I should have been more precise. What is the largest deficit a Haase-coached team has come back from in the last 10 minutes of a game?

Didn’t Lottich go crazy against OSU one night when Stanford was way behind late?
Whenever somebody comes from way back I think of Billy Casper and Reuben Mayes.
