Wish I were going to be around to volunteer for this. This will be the last time the event is played at Pasatiempo as it exists. The course is closing shortly after this tournament for a "retrovation" that will last until Dec 2024.

It's long overdue. It's an older course, one of Alister MacKenzie's (Augusta, Cypress Point) and it needs to be modernized.  They're doing it in two tranches, keeping one nine open as they upgrade the other nine. They will be fully open from December 2023 through April 2024, then will re-close to complete the other nine.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 03-29-2023

The Goodwin tees off tomorrow. 28 teams playing in two waves of foursomes at Harding Park in San Francisco, but a pretty weak field overall with only four ranked teams: #7 Stanford, #11 Georgia Tech, #13 Oklahoma, #20 Oregon

Stanford's lineup: Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown, Ng, Greyserman. Ouyang, Yang, and Menon are competing as individuals

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 03-30-2023

Stanford holds a 2-shot lead after round 1 of The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park. Strong play from the top 3 spots
1. Stanford -7
2. Oklahoma -5
3. Georgia Tech -3

I walked with Barclay Brown's group today. It was mid 50s with a 1-club wind, which is mild by Harding standards. The course was playing long due to the wetness from rains Tuesday & Wednesday. Brown chipped in for birdie twice on the front 9. I joked with him that he needs to miss greens more often.
T1. Brown -4
T3. Vilips -3
T7. Thorbjornsen -2
T59. Ng +2
T129. Greyserman +6
----------------
T44. Ouyang +1
T98. Menon +4
T111. Yang +5

Stanford will be out early tomorrow, starting on #10 at 7:29am. Final round times will be determined by order of finish after tomorrow.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 03-31-2023

Rough day for the Cardinal, who now sit in 4th going into tomorrow's final round
1. Georgia Tech -13
2. Oklahoma -12
3. San Diego -6
4. Stanford -4
5. San Francisco -2
6. Oregon -1

Still have three players in the top 20 individually, but the rest of the roster is really struggling
T5. Vilips -3
T9. Thorbjornsen -2
T18. Brown -1
T01. Greyserman +6
T101. Ng & Yang +7
T112. Menon +8
T123. Ouyang +9

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 03-31-2023

Win, were you out with the team today? Just a disappointing day all around. The golf course was playing a shot or more easier than yesterday, yet Stanford played worse with no one under par. Stanford lost 10 shots to Oklahoma and lost 13 shots to Georgia Tech and San Diego. This team's inconsistency must really frustrate both Coach Ray and the players. But all you can do is come back tomorrow and try to do better.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 03-31-2023

I wasn't there today. I will be there tomorrow morning but can't stay for the afternoon when Stanford will be playing.

It hurts when you only have 3 guys you can count on. Coach Ray must see more potential in Greyserman he's played him a lot this year despite being a frosh.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - d4cohn - 03-31-2023

Alum Patrick Rodgers is the leader by 3 at the Valero Texas Open at roughly the halfway point of the tourney (Round 2 hasn't finished for some players) on the PGA Tour. Patrick is seeking his first PGA Tour win in his PGA Tour career.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - d4cohn - 04-01-2023

Patrick Rodgers will take a slim 1 shot lead into the final round tomorrow in San Antonio. He will have to hold off
talented player Corey Connors if he wants to pick up his first PGA Tour victory and with it, a trip to Augusta
for the Masters.

Is Rodgers' game suited to Augusta?

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 04-01-2023

The men's golf team played better today but not well enough to win their tournament.
1. Oklahoma -18
2. Georgia Tech -12
3. Stanford -1

None of our top three was particularly impressive, and overall the team made way too many doubles & triples. That's really been the story of this team - if they keep those blowup holes down, they can win. If not, they can't.
T11. Brown -1
T16. Vilips E
T24. Thorbjornsen +1
T60. Greyserman +6
T67. Ng +7
-------------------------
T88. Ouyang +9
T98. Menon +10
T117. Yang +12

The team has a little over a week to prepare for the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo, and then it's Pac-12s at home followed by NCAAs.

The front nine has been badly compromised by all the tree plantings.

The original greens complexes were, in the view of many experts, McKenzie's masterpieces.  Cannot wait to see Urbina's solutions.

He has done a solid job this year on medium to long-range putting (previously he has been very strong off the tee, but not as strong in all the other areas of the game at the standard of a PGA Tour player).

The field at the Masters is only ~90 players, so it is not that difficult to even make the cut at the Masters relative to the size of the field. But I won't pick him to win the Green Jacket either.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - d4cohn - 04-02-2023

Patrick Rodgers had a final round to forget, going 1-over to finish solo 5th in San Antonio. He will not qualify for the Masters
after failing to hold the final round lead.

If Urbina has half a brain he will do his best to stay true to McKenzie's original designs. I haven't played the new Lake Merced yet but my understanding is that Gil Hanse really tried to do that (they were only able to use 14 of McKenzie's original 18 hole designs).

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 04-10-2023

The men's team tees off today at Pasatiempo in the 76th Western Intercollegiate, which runs through Wednesday. Slightly different format in that 6 players play and 5 scores count (vs. normal 5 players & 4 scores). Stanford's lineup is Brown, Vilips, Thorbjornsen, Ng, Menon, and Greryserman. Anton Ouyang is competing as an individual.

Top 25 teams at the event:
#8 Stanford
#9 Pepperdine
#17 Arizona
#22 Oregon
#23 Coiorado State

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 04-11-2023

After a solid first round the men's team sits in third place
1. Cal -16
2. Oregon -15
3. Stanford -11
4. Pepperdine -5

Thorbjornsen kept the big numbers off the card. In fact, he had a bogey-free round with six birdies. Five of the six on the roster sit in the top 20
T2. Thorbjornsen -6
T13. Ng -2
T18. Brown, Greyserman, Vilips -1
T30. Menon E
T71. Ouyang (I) +4

Stanford tees off late in Round 2, starting at 12:58pm

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 04-12-2023

Final round is just getting started at Pasatiempo. Seems like Stanford is having trouble putting together 3 good days as they struggled in round 2.
1. Pepperdine -27
2. Oregon -13
3. BYU -8
4. Cal -4
5. Stanford -2

Brown & Thorbjornsen were the only ones in the top 20 after round 2, and Brown just threw up a triple bogey on #2...

At this point I think making the top 8 at nationals would be considered a success for this team, but I think that's going to be a big challenge.

Stanford has had a lot of talented players in the program in the last 10 years. Not counting the Covid year (and this year is TBD), Stanford has made Nationals 7 of 8 times since 2013-14. But Stanford has only finished in the top 8 twice - the 2019 NC season and the 2014 season when they won the stroke play competition but lost to Oklahoma State in the semifinals. This season seems similar - a top 25 team but not a top 8 team.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 04-13-2023

Final round did not go well, but not just for Stanford. Finished 4th by one shot but nowhere close to the top 3
1. Pepperdine -16
2. Oregon -7
3. Kal E
4. Stanford +18

Only silver lining is that three players, including two who aren't regularly in our top three, shot at or below the final round average of 75
T16. Thorbjornsen +1
T22. Menon +4
T27. Brown +5
T34. Vilips +7
T48. Greyserman +9
T55. Ng +10
T86. Ouyang (I) +22

Next up is Pac-12s at home at the end of the month. Two weeks to work on keeping the big numbers off the card - this team's nemesis.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 04-26-2023

Stanford hosts Men's Pac-12 starting with 36 holes on Friday and 18 each on Saturday & Sunday. It's a rare 72-hole event, and also it's a 6-player lineup with the top 5 scores counting. No surprises in the lineup: Thorbjornsen, Brown, Vilips, Menon, Ng, Greyserman

Leaderboard at https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=27787

In other news, Thorbjornsen & Vilips have been invited to the Arnold Palmer Cup which showcases top men's and women's collegiate golfers in a USA vs The World team event. Thorbjornsen will play for Team USA for the second year in a row while Vilips will play for the International team. Surprisingly, none of the Stanford women are on the roster. I have to believe that Zhang & Ganne were invited but decided not to play.
