Sports Illustrated article on Sophia Smith. Only a brief mention of Stanford. Mostly about her pro career.
May be behind a paywall, but IIRC Sports Illustrated lets non-subscribers read a limited number of articles each month.

Why does Stanford keep claiming this is a 442? Forwards in a 442 don’t come back to 25 yards from their own goal on the sideline 2 min into the game like Williams just did. It’s clearly been a 433 all year.

Doms scored a goal today against SJSU. We are up 2-0.

Halftime, still a 2-0 game. Goals by Aikey (30 min) and Doms less than three minutes later.

Kind of fumbly in the SJ st box the first 30 min, but Aikey’s first goal (of 4!!!) was lovely and shook them out of it.
6-0 Stanford with 19 minutes left.

What's that, a sombrero?
Apparently, it's a "haul".

Have never seen "haul" before. It happens so rarely, I am kinda skeptical that beyond brace and hat trick there is any common term. But hey, I guess I can go with haul.
See video link, but basically in a sombrero you flip the ball over a defender's head and then pick it back up on the other side of the defender.

That is, the airborne counterpart of a nutmeg.

#3 seed Stanford vs. #6 seed BYU, who beat kinda sorta rival Utah Valley State, 3-0. Winner of the match gets the winner of #2 UNC v. Georgia.
It'd be nice to see Stanford vs. Santa Clara again. SCU beat Cal in the first round, faces #1 seed Notre Dame in South Bend. Probably the end for SCU, but you never know.

Stanford hosts BYU in a 2nd round match at 11 am pacific on Thursday. I think the game is early in the day because the winner is likely to have to travel cross country to Chapel Hill for the 3rd round on Saturday. Gives the winner time to travel on Thursday.
BYU was the national runner up last year. They lost to Florida State on penalty kicks. They graduated their top 2 scorers from last season (who scored 18 and 15 goals respectively).
This season they are 10-2-6 with both losses early in the season. They have not lost since Sept 10. Among common opponents, BYU tied Santa Clara (same as Stanford), beat USF 6-0 (Stanford won 3-0), beat San Diego 6-0 (Stanford won 5-0), beat Utah 2-1 (Stanford won 5-0), tied Colorado (Stanford won 2-0).
Should be a good matchup. Looks like it will be available to watch live via ESPN+ streaming.

The game will actually be at UNC, the #2 seed, who hosts the second and third rounds. A product of our underseeding at #3, which is underscored by #2 seed St. Louis losing in the first round. (a team I and others criticized earlier in this thread for being seeded ahead of us due to RPI). We should be hosting the second and third rounds in one of the regions.

Kattalin Stahl isn’t on the team this year but rather playing for the Swiss national team. Does anyone know if she took the year off from Stanford to focus on the World Cup or has she left the program? I thought she had great potential but wa playing behind better players.

She is done at Stanford.

RPI was bad this year as we have discussed. I was picking on NC St as a ridiculous seed and I saw they went down in Rd 1 on Pk's as well to UCF. Good for UCLA who now gets an unseeded opponent.
By Massey Stanford has #s 4 (UNC), 5 (us) and 6 (UND) all in our regional. Even beyond not hosting, we got no favors in the seeding with 3 of the top 6 in the same bracket.
On a total side note - how the heck did USC lose to UC Irvine?
Couldn't happen to. a lovelier school but seriously? UCI was 66 in Massey and too lazy to look up their RPI.

They got hot at the right time. They were picked to finish 1st in the Big West with a number of top players returning, including the 2021 Big West goalkeeper of the year and two Big West co-defensive players of the year. But they had been inconsistent (the reason for the low Massey number). However, they figured something out in time for the Big West tournament and haven't given up a goal in 475 minutes of playoff soccer. A bad first round matchup for USC (even though USC had beaten them earlier). Kind of reminds me of Santa Clara and Stanford last season.

With respect to the final 32 teams remaining in the NCAA Women's Championship, it is interesting to note how many of the schools are ranked on the USNWR's top national universities list, including #3 Harvard, #3 Stanford, #10 Duke, #10 Northwestern, #13 Brown, #13 Vanderbilt, #18 Notre Dame, #20 UCLA, #22 Georgetown, #25 Virginia, #29 UNC, #34 UC-Irvine, #38 Texas, #49 Ohio State and tied at #55 Florida State and #55 Santa Clara. That's 16 of the remaining 32. Hooray for smart soccer players!
