5,500 faulty papers were retracted in 2022 compared with 119 in 2002. Tally kept by Retraction Watch:

MTL's downfall, coming (well maybe) to a theater near you!

I have no idea what Theo Baker looks like, so that may very well be him. But where on the Stanford University campus is that shiny 30-floor highrise located?

About a century ago I regularly communicated with a writer. His co-authored book was optioned to Hollywood at a then-astronomical price, especially for a tyro (Variety.dictionary can translate). I read the book and it looked like a slam dunk to me. As far as I know the movie was never made. It’s a long trip from optioning a book to the silver screen.
The guy was
Jack Passarella. Here’s the book.

Not to be outdone U$C is now also in the mix. Not the president, but a "big name". Of course, if true, these accusations were about results that may have killed people. That is a different level.

Bravman---currently Bucknell president and mentioned (in this thread at least) as a possible Stanford presidential candidate---announces he is taking a seven-month sabbatical starting in January.
I don't think he's coming to Stanford.
His words:
Quote: I also acknowledge that being "on" 24/7 as your president for nearly 14 years, while deeply rewarding, is also quite demanding. After a period of introspection and long talks with my family — and with the strong support of the Board of Trustees, who urged me to take my first sabbatical in 39 years — I have made the decision to take that leave from January 1, 2024, through July 31, 2024.
In brief, I need to prepare for the upcoming challenges of executing the public phase of our next comprehensive campaign, which will require a great deal of focus as we seek an historic level of new support for the University. I also will take this time to review the ongoing implementation of the strategic plan, the original timetable of which was unavoidably delayed due to COVID. Given the strength of my senior team and the conclusion of my chairmanship of the Geisinger Board of Directors, this is an especially opportune moment.

Looks like Harvard's president Claudine Gay is under fire for plagiarism:
https://freebeacon.com/campus/this-is-definitely-plagiarism-harvard-university-president-claudine-gay-copied-entire-paragraphs-from-others-academic-work-and-claimed-them-as-her-own/
from the article " In four papers published between 1993 and 2017, including her doctoral dissertation, Gay, a political scientist, paraphrased or quoted nearly 20 authors—including two of her colleagues in Harvard University’s department of government—without proper attribution, according to a Washington Free Beacon analysis...(which) worked with nearly a dozen scholars to analyze 29 potential cases of plagiarism. Most of them said that Gay had violated a core principle of academic integrity as well as Harvard’s own anti-plagiarism policies...in at least 10 instances, Gay lifted full sentences—even entire paragraphs—with just a word or two tweaked."

There are new allegations. First, that she falsified data in at least one paper. Second, she’s difficult to work with. Added note: she may have been involved in chasing economist Roland Fryer out of the classroom.

This is a more balanced view than the allegations coming from Christopher Rufo/Free Beacon. Troubling to me is that her defenders cite her scholarly reputation and character without actually refuting the details in the allegations. This probably does warrant an investigation similar to Stanford's of MTL. This is a separate matter from the latest controversies regarding her Congressional testimony--which the Harvard Board seems to have set aside this morning.
Update:
Quote:The corporation addressed allegations of plagiarism against Gay, saying that Harvard became aware of them in late October regarding three articles she had written. It initiated an independent review at Gay’s request.
The corporation reviewed the results on Saturday, “which revealed a few instances of inadequate citation” and found no violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct, it said. Gay is proactively requesting four corrections in two articles to insert citations and quotation marks that were omitted from the original publications, the statement said.

Nothing like a little flim-flam to bring this thread full circle:

One major reason: Tessier-Lavinge refused to compromise his commitment to free speech.

Didn't realize one of Gay's papers in question was produced while she was at Stanford around 2001. Apparently, the statistical validity of her work was questioned then, and she refused to share her data. Plagiarism and faulty logic. Wow. What a combo. . . .
