Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - Pokefan20 - 12-21-2011

The Big 12 defenses look so bad statistically because they have played many more plays than the defenses from other conferences.  This especially is true against the SEC.  When you compare how many plays OSU's defense has played to Alabama, OSU has been on the field nearly 3 more games than them.  When you play against fast paced passing offenses of course it is gonna make your defense look bad.

True, but OK State was ranked 5th of 10 in the Big 12 on a yards per play basis.

Terry is hardly a homer. He backs up EVERY argument on ANY subject with solid facts. He's so solid that our former Rose Bowl quarterback and current color commentator asked him for a statistic at a fan event.

If I were in court, I'd definitely want him on my side.

If both teams play at their very best OSU will win by 17+points

That's the thing with these guys from oklahoma... they show up all friendly and saying "y'all" slightly too often... then they pull off their rubber masks and say WE WILL DESTROY YOUUUUUU

Gotta say, I'm reminded that "both teams play at their very best" also implies that Stanford is playing "their very best" ...  that's a pretty nuts team. If I could pick against your spread in the "both playing their very best," I'm putting lots of money on stanford.

In my opinion if both teams play to the very best of their ability then it will be a really, really great game. I also don't think either team will blow the other out no matter how much I would love to see the Cowboys do that. Also not all of us say y'all.

I think the closest to a Terry equivalent would be Cowboy2

I haven't read every post from Terry but the couple of posts he has posted on this thread are of bias.  Stating that your qb really only threw 4 interceptions because balls where tipped and saying that your recievers dropping the ball and us intercepting wont be because of anything we do is just a little homerism.  Yes i can say weeden has had alot of his interceptions off of tipped balls but he still threw the ball so it was still an interception.  Could a reason your reciever could have a dropped ball in the game be due to scared of being hit or other different schemes we did previously in the game making him lose focus? I'd say the chances are high. I'm not calling this guy/gal a crazy homer but those 2 posts are a good example of some stanford bias. If you want an example of an OSU fan bias look at my post on page 2.

I didn't say Luck really had only 4 interceptions. I said that 4 of his 9 interceptions came when receivers either dropped well-thrown balls that hit them in the hands or fell down. Those were the receivers' fault, not Luck's fault and not due to the defensive scheme.

Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - FarmBoy - 12-21-2011

Are a higher proportion of Luck's interceptions due to "receiver error" than the average FBS QB? Perhaps it's just because he has so few, that we can distinctly remember each of them and the cause. I wouldn't be surprised if most FBS QBs have a decent proportion of their passes from "receiver error." Of course you could make an argument that what appears as receiver error may have been the result of a poorly thrown ball. I'm not saying this is the case, but if a QB guns the ball into a receiver's hands from ten yards away, it might be that the passer's lack of "touch" deserves at least partial responsibility.

FWIW, I think Luck has also benefited from a fair number of drops by DBs on ball that were thrown right into a DBs hands. Heck, I remember two such cases from the Orange Bowl last year that could have dramatically changed the outcome of that game.

Re: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State: Thoughts/Predictions - terry - 12-21-2011

I'm not talking about generic receiver error, and I'm not talking about other quarterbacks. I'm talking about a few specific passes by Luck this year.

The specific question was whether Oklahoma State could try to replicate whatever Oregon did to cause Luck to throw 2 interceptions. My point is that neither of those 2 interceptions resulted from the defensive scheme by Oregon, and it follows that there isn't a viable OK State defensive scheme that could replicate those 2 interceptions.

I also made the point that more generally, 4 of Luck's 9 interceptions came on balls that should have been completions because they were well thrown balls that the receivers dropped (or in one case the receiver fell down). My point is that those particular interceptions do not suggest a defensive scheme that OK State could pursue successfully, because the defensive scheme did not cause those particular interceptions.

There are (sometimes plausible) explanations for virtually every statistic you can evaluate.  My personal favorite defense of a team that gives up a lot of yards and points is when their offense scored so often that they had to kickoff to the other team more often (which undoubtedly inflated Stanford's yards-against and point-against numbers too)!  I'll give you guys the "we had big leads, so we put our subs in" story (taking your word that it's true) and maybe even the "they were throwing to catch-up, and we were just in Prevent" argument.  That said, sometimes, playing a lot of plays on defense also means that you couldn't make the other team punt.  Guess we'll see soon enough!
