A few bounces down the stretch and maybe a bowl game??
If we had more home games left other than SMU I’d have more hope.
We’re stuck in a rut hard to win on the road, and hard to beat a significantly strong team at home.
Sorry that sounded more pessimistic than I intended.
Yes if Coach P & Co can translate this brand of football onto an ACC road game, absolutely.
And Kal isn’t your usual road game.

Well, given that we were given a 25% chance to win this one, we’re 4 times more likely to make a Bowl than we were this afternoon.

A bit more, given Bayes updating and all

Agree with you though, it’ll take learning how to play away from home to have even a remote shot at it, but we moved forward today and I’m happy and grateful for that.

Let’s see how many more coaches we can get on the hot seat

Go Stanford

RE: Stanford-NC State Game Thread - KartyFan - 10-23-2026

Wow, what a fun game to watch! We outplayed them by much more than three points. Very glad to have my first wrong game prediction of the season.

Was in the stadium and am not sure exactly what people are referring to on clock management. If it's about throwing on first down, I would say that given our overall offensive success I was in favor of continuing with the balance that got us here. Tempo seemed to really be working so I am even OK with snapping he ball with 8-10 seconds left on the play clock. We complain about run-run-pass so we can't them complain about pass-run-pass.

End of the day, we sustained drives long enough for NC State to rely on an onside kick. And yeah, in terms of game management we far outcoached them.

That said, screen on 4th and 20 from the 35 was one of the weirdest calls I have ever seen.

That was bizarre, a truly whiskey tango foxtrot moment. Anyone care to explain the strategy behind that one?

RE: Stanford-NC State Game Thread - KartyFan - 10-24-2026

Tavita said he didn't feel good about a FG that long and a punt wouldn't gain that much. Didn't address the play call.

My guess:

1. We thought they'd sit back closer to the sticks

2. And even if we didn't get the first down, we'd get 10+ yards, which would put them inside their own 25 anyway

I think if your kicker has the leg you go for the FG, even if it's a 25% chance to convert. But with our snaps going all over the place maybe we are just that scared right now.

RE: Stanford-NC State Game Thread - KartyFan - 10-24-2026

Some more observations from Stanford Stadium:

1. Wow, that was FUN! I came away with similar feelings as the Hawaii game: that looked like "real football." This is the type of game that gives us hope we can become a legitimate P4 team, and will hopefully get some butts back in the seats. Nothing contrived to try to get around a glaring OL weakness. As far as I remember, nearly all runs were between the tackles, and we were pushing the NC State DL back consistently. Would love to know when the last time was we had that many 10+ yard runs in a game. Anyone have that stat?

2. Davis Warren looked awesome. Yes, we generally protected him well, but there were also some key throws he made under pressure (like the back shoulder TD to High). There were several plays where I saw a blindside sack coming, and he took a couple steps in the pocket to avoid and either throw it away or make something out of it.

3. So great to give Micah Ford an opportunity to shine. Super important for recruiting as well. Our RBs generally seem to fall forward, with Champ Hampton making a few yards out of nothing a couple times too. This was a staple of Stanford RBs in the 2010s that seemed to be lost until Micah came around. 2nd and 7 is a lot better than 2nd and 10.

4. TV gives a better impression here, but from my seat it seemed like we made a ton of shoestring tackles that stopped would-be first downs or breakout runs. I kept being pleasantly surprised. Maybe NC State is just a half step slower than Miami, Wake, and Duke.

5. Attendance, yikes. More games like this will help, and I hope we can figure out some way to engage the broader community. SMU will probably be better just because they bring more fans. I don't know if NC State had more than 150 fans there. Just shows what a farce this whole system is. That said, the team did a great job creating their own sideline energy, and the people running the stadium lights and sounds did a good job pumping in some artificial energy to make it feel like a real game.

6. As a few of us have noted, we have looked decent against bad/mediocre teams and horrible against very good teams this year. This was a big test for us, with NC State falling in the mediocre/average bucket depending on the day. We more than looked like we belonged on the field. I still struggle to understand what this all means. Is there a level of athleticism that simply overwhelms our players and scheme and puts us in a blender? Louisville feels like a big step up (despite their away NC State loss), somewhere between Duke and Wake Forest. A win is unlikely, but can we avoid another away game where everything gets away from us at the start?

Overall just a really pleasant experience. More of this, please!!

Recipe for success seems to be:

Play bottom rung ACC team
With an injury depleted roster
At 10 PM Eastern body clock time

I agree with your thinking. I thought the call was actually a good one. If the defensive secondary plays deep and loose and the DL rushes hard to stop the pass a screen is a good call. If the back gets into the open area in front of the secondary fairly clean he may only need to make one player miss for the first down. Unfortunately we aren't a big "screen" team and didn't execute it well.

Our kicker also hasn't impressed lately. He has missed some FGs that last year he probably would have made. How much of that is bad play timing affecting his kicking I don't know but I am sure it was a factor in the decision.

Close, but the syllable count is off slightly. You may resubmit to receive full credit for your Stanford football haiku assignment.

Haha, any resemblance to a haiku syllable structure was entirely inadvertent.

I too attended the game last night. I took advantage of going to the game solo to check out the tailgates beforehand and watch the game from all over the stadium.

Some in-person observations:
Last, if anyone has a connection to the cheerleaders:  the students don't jump to "All Right Now" any more.  My freshman tells me it's because they don't know when to do it.  Let's get that fixed for Big Game!

RE: Stanford-NC State Game Thread - JJJ - 10-24-2026

Andrew Luck taught incoming frosh when to jump during orientation.

My kid is a freshman who was at that event.  The lesson didn't stick.

That reminds me:  Stanford also gave every freshman (Class of 2030) a football jersey with the number "30" on it.  They even had the option to put their own name on the back.  That was a really cool idea. If that was funded by a donor, thank you!  I don't have a good shot of my kid in the jersey but here's one:

Sorry to hear the lesson didn’t stick, but congrats on having a frosh on the Farm!
I think the jersey gift started last year for the Class of ‘29? It was a donor last year, could be the same person this year.
It made me go and have one made for myself (I may even wear it on the field at my 50th if I make it that long).

Good to keep engaging whoever is there.  LSJUMB has got to get bigger as well and get more students in their ranks… numbers continue to disappoint, and while sometimes the music is still good, yesterday at many times it wasn’t, including halftime.  Kind of surprised things aren’t turning around by now for them after all the changes that were made.

And a minor musical note on ARN: super hard to clap or know when to jump when there’s the amplified band from one end of the stadium and then a time-delayed version from the other end thanks to the speed of sound.  It’s bad sound design and a crutch that shouldn’t be necessary, especially in half-empty stadiums where the sound still carries pretty well.

We can try handing out tickets to local H.S. teams ... but that doesn't work on FRIDAY NIGHTS!

I don't think that's true. Both in terms of score and yards per play margin relative to opponent Georgia Tech was slightly better. Regardless, come on, obviously Reich's Florida State and especially Cal games were far better than anything we've seen from Pritchard. Last year's Big Game definitely the last "several years" highlight. Before that, we did beat Notre Dame on the road in 2022.
