Here's my theory about the ESPN quote: the article was largely canned--they knew Sanders was going to commit, so they pre-wrote large portions of it, but didn't re-check some of the details.

What a great story for Stanford to tell about Barry J. Sanders.  Provides a great deal of power for Stanford coaches to use on prospective recruits that at first don't show interest in the school.  They can say look at Barry Sanders.  He had absolutely no interest in our school until he just happened to be in California and decided to check it out.  He fell in love with it.  You might too.  The place is special.  And then send a Green Eggs & Ham book to the recruit, to be memorable and drive home that they should try it before saying they don't like it!

What else could the admissions board have been waiting for to make their decision. You know his app was sitting at the top of the pile to get reviewed. And then, if you really didn't know, why would you make a grand announcement in a public situation that you were going, if you didn't know you were going to be admitted. It all seemed odd. The newsok article makes a lot more sense.

The original Sanders article about not being admitted yet seemed somewhat plausible given the Ricky Seale sitation a couple of years ago, in which Seale apparently did not know he was admitted until the night before national signing day.  I could not recall if I had ever read when Sanders actually subitted his final application, so it seemed possible.
