As a non-49ers fan, I don't see Alex Smith as a quarterback who can take his team to the Superbowl.  Torching the awful Saints defense is one thing.  But if you can't throw accurately with pressure, then you can't win a Superbowl because at some point you're going to face a monster pass rush in the playoffs (oddly, the playoffs this season featured a bunch of all-offense/no-defense teams, but that's not typical).

And let's not forget that the Niners faced one of the weakest schedules in the NFL this year.  Even with a WR upgrade, I think you need a new quarterback.  Some quarterbacks just don't have the right stuff.

One other note: several sports writers have commented on the odd play selection by Harbaugh last night.  Despite a very effective run game (5 ypc), the Niners threw way more than they ran in the 2nd half.  The result was a lot of punts, especially near the end of the game.  I'm reminded of when Stanford was driving near the goal line in Big Game a couple of years back, and Harbaugh decided to pass instead of feeding Toby.  The results were not good for either of Harbaugh's teams.

That's just silly. He was 15 minutes away from doing just that last night. He may not be able to CARRY his team to the SB, but he was good enough this year, and even last night, with the support of a stout defense and solid run game.

Oops, misspoke.  I meant win a Superbowl, not get there.  And he obviously wasn't good enough because they didn't advance.

Also, it's amazing how much people are reading into one good (not great==17 TDs in 16 games is not impressive) year from Smith.  After several years of mediocrity, the most likely outcome for Smith next year is regression to the mean.  Not that he'll be awful, just not as good as this year.

Interesting article: Did Giants strategically concuss Kyle Williams?  The effect was not concussive, but it was certain targeting, if the story is to be believed.

Please tell me you don't think this is a logical statement. Do you think Dan Marino wasn't good enough to win a Super Bowl, because he didn't? Trent Dilfer > Dan Marino? Seriously?
