Wow...this thread has now hit page 7! That's got to mean at least there's some remaining interest in men's b'ball. Of course, I suppose it's also true that train wrecks generate a fair amount of interest, so interest does not always = a good thing.
But, I digress...
Given the recent turn of the thread to what may/may not make a good coach [especially considering whether or not Mad Dog may fit that category now or at some point in the future], the thing that I've found most puzzling about Dawkins is that the one position I would have thought he would be best suited to coach (and, perhaps, even recruit) at the highest level is guard [and, specifically, point guard], while, to my eye, the one position that has performed throughout his tenure at the least proficient [or, most charitably, at the least consistent] level is...point guard. I see our end-of-game [and, similarly, our end-of-first half] woes as attributable in large measure to this fact.
I've been to enough games to recount specifics to Muir about those moments, and they make me LESS, not MORE, encouraged about our prospects [or Dawkins' coaching ability]. Of course, it's possible Muir missed them because he left early to beat the concession stand lines.

What Dawkins really needs?
The basketball equivalent of Spider 2 Y Banana.
Of course, he'd need a QB like Andrew Luck to make it work. Instead we have Aaron [Half] Bright

Bright is a good example of Dawkins's poor coaching. Bright has a very focused set of skills -- he should be the sixth/seventh man guy who just tries to score and disrupt. Dawkins has him focusing on running the offense and doesn't free him enough. It's odd, because Bright was well-used in 2011-12; Dawkins decided to change his successful role for (apparently) no good reason whatsoever.

I disagree. College players are responsible for graduating, just as any college student is responsible for graduating. A University should make appropriate resources available to help students do this. A college coach should make sure his players avail themselves of these resources as necessary if he or she learns they are struggling. That's where the responsibility ends.
A college coach's real responsibility is to keep internet message board posters happy.

I suspect it is not that easy at some schools to just blame the student-athlete. In some programs if you are not producing on the field you will lose your scholarship. (see SEC) That threat is not really applicable at Stanford, but it is real in some places. If that threat is a reality, then I am willing to believe that type of environment makes it much harder to graduate.
Then in other places there are limited class schedules. At Stanford only the least organized athletes will not be able to find a suitable collection of courses to satisfy the requirements of their major. However, at many schools even one or two missed classes in a cycle can make it impossible to graduate in 5 years (see UCB). Layer in midweek games or strict on-campus test policies and it may not even be possible to get all of the classes required while on scholarship. While it is fun to blame JT or the athletes for UCB's graduation results, I suspect UCB is the real problem there. In UCBs case I really believe the school's sink or swim philosophy is the problem.
For Stanford, I do think that the players should be expected to figure it out, but I am willing to acknowledge that it is not quite so easy to balance everything at some places, for a variety of reasons.

As a metaphor for this year's men's basketball season, this isn't too far off:

Really sad, but sort of interesting to watch...Â
Of course, the question for many of us now is whether we would buy season tickets to see another one go up in flames. I'm not so sure...

If I renew my tickets it will be with the future in mind, not next year.

Somehow Stanford basketball has been bestowed N.D. football-level of deference. For any other team, failing to meet expectations would be an excellent reason to lower your expectations. Not Johnny Dawkins, apparently: a sixth chance and a preseason top 25 ranking. Bizarre.
