I have no problem with this.  It's the complete opposite of punting on third down IMO.  If they've earned it in practice, give them the chance.  I'm sure Conrad can hit that kick more often than not.

***** horrible playcall. 3rd and 5, run out in the ogre package and run up the gut. Come on Shaw, that is disgusting.

Shaw goes conservative again and we turn the ball over.

Is it the right decision? Time will tell.

Please don't go three and out.

Next time, shout louder, JPRI.

Seriously, three straight runs up the middle?? Like someone said before, it looks like Shaw is coaching not to lose.

#partyinthebackfield time.

This.  Play action pass.  Anything that gives us a chance.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - Cardinal96 - 10-19-2013

WOW.  Jordan Richards came to play.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - 82 Card - 10-19-2013

Our D doesn't look the least bit winded today. Amazing what a difference a week and a few thousand feet can make.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - washingtonismoney - 10-19-2013

Shaw's playcalling the past four drives has been dumb.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - dabigv13 - 10-19-2013

I feel like in the first half, our coaches had a good game, our players did not execute. In this half, I feel like our players are making awesome plays, and our coaches are letting them down.

Still, a W is a W as long as we get it.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - akCard - 10-19-2013

Did Gaffney just duck under that UCLA defender who came flying in over the line?

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - 2 for 2028 - 10-19-2013

Man am I happy Tyler came back.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - dabigv13 - 10-19-2013

I'll take the win, but a 4 score blowout like this game could've been with a little bit better execution and some better playcalling would've been really nice to shake off last week.

Still we outplayed UCLA easily in all phases today, which was certainly reassuring.

Agree. Defense brought it (appropriate that the game ended on a sack) but the offense was up and down.

Good win to erase (sort of) the bad taste from a bad loss to Utah.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - washingtonismoney - 10-19-2013

Hoping that Cajuste's injury was less serious than it appeared.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - JohnR34231 - 10-19-2013

Defense bails us out.

Hey, I'm just happy that we won.

I'm not complaining about the play calling or why we didn't win by more, or anything like that.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - washingtonismoney - 10-19-2013

A lot of stats people were saying UCLA's defense was the actual strong unit, not its offense. Some vindication for them, though even slightly better execution puts us at...what, 35? 40? points.

Still, Stanford's 5.6 yards per play is by far the most per play UCLA has given up all year. (Previous worst was 5.03 against Utah.) Take out the Wilkerson stupidity and you're up to 5.8 or so.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - Treefence - 10-19-2013

brobdingnagian brobdingnagian brobdingnagian win for Stanford.  Credit to the defense and the O-line really showing up, especially Andrus Peat, I only saw one good play by Barr all game, pretty much quite otherwise.  Both guys are probably top 5 picks...

Well, the defense covers up his weaknesses.

Re: Stanford - UCLA thread - OutsiderFan - 10-19-2013

Last week's last minute play calling now looks even more baffling considering Utah couldn't stop Stanford running late any better than UCLA could.

Yes, should have scored more points, but a 14 point win over a hyped Top 10 team with a (cough) Voldemort contender, is impressive in anyone's book.

And besides, how can anyone complain about any win with a catch like Whitfield's?  That was the best catch I've ever seen!

I am really not that down in general on Shaw's playcalling ability. It's fine! However, that playcalling in the last couple drives in the fourth quarter were, in fact, terrible.

Other note: did Luke Kaumatule get more meaningful snaps today than Shittu has gotten over his entire career?
