This.

I give all the credit to Shaw for sticking with what has worked very, very well for Stanford these last 4 or 5 seasons but it seems like he has no Game Plan B when Game Plan A is clearly not effective. Evidence? I offer this year's Oregon State, Utah, SC games and now RB100.

What's really surprising is that Mason's D is getting shredded.

Ref haters have to admit that spot on hogan's run was pretty generous.

Yes it was. A first.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - akCard - 01-01-2014

I think I saw why the offensive line isn't as effective as usual: that sideline shot showed that the MSU defensive line is submarining the O-line and blowing up the blocking schemes

Anyone else think that that was a useless FG?  We still need a touchdown, and we've struggled mightily on offense.  Why not go for it and, if we fail, at least they get the ball on the 20 or so.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - BostonCard - 01-01-2014

Was that fake by design?

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - JohnR34231 - 01-01-2014

Well, we need a touchdown and a field goal to win the game, so I guess it makes sense to take the field goal. The way the game has gone, though, it is hard to be optimistic about our chances to get the ball back and get the TD.

Ball back ... check.
Now for the TD.

The play calling absolutely mystifies me. We obviously have no faith in the passing attack.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - Leftcoast - 01-01-2014

Pretty sure that wasn't a designed fake.  The holder fumbled the set dow/spot so decided to pick it up.  Almost a miraculous play.

Hats off to Michigan State. They are a good football team. The underdog won, they played well, they showed resources and we didn't show flexibility.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - 82 Card - 01-01-2014

This one really hurts. Yes, our team got beat in the second half. But without the 4 points that the refs gave MSU in the first half, the score would be tied.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - Langdude - 01-01-2014

Better team won. Hats off to the Spartans.

I am just really sad for Murphy, Skov, and the seniors.

Ditto. Even my roommate, who knows little about football, asked me why the Stanford coaches kept calling running plays that went straight up the middle.

It was a good season overall but a disappointing Rose Bowl game.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - 82 Card - 01-01-2014

I feel some home improvements coming on.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - JohnR34231 - 01-01-2014

We just got beat. I guess we can blame the refs if we want, for all the good that is going to do.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - washingtonismoney - 01-01-2014

The most important factors in losing this game were getting destroyed at LOS and losing field position. However that's not generally a problem so probably doesn't need to be addressed. The secondary was poor and that's concerning.

On the other hand inability to throw intermediate has been an issue all year. That's something Shaw needs to correct. Whether it's better scheme or a different QB, not sure.

(There were some suspect playcalls. But I don't think that's among the most important, to be sure.)

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - Gauss - 01-01-2014

The biggest factors for this loss were MSU disciplined defense, and their QB.

On our side, some calls could have been better, and Lyons really played poorly.
If we had another Carter or Amanam, I think we win this game.

Re: 100th Rose Bowl Game Thread - Kirk72 - 01-01-2014

I know we don't have any tight ends but sometimes it feels like we have no passing plays that are designed to just pick up 10 yards. Our two options are power up the middle and 40 yard passes. We couldn't sustain any drives or pick up crucial first downs.
