Re: Class of 2018 - BigEasyCard - 03-22-2017

Here's an article on Michael Wilson's Junior day experience:

https://stanford.rivals.com/news/one-of-california-s-best-michael-wilson-aiming-for-stanford-offer

I noted the candor about his prospects from the Stanford coaching staff:

"The message from area recruiter and special team’s coach Pete Alamar about a possible offer in the future was patience. The Cardinal are working to fill a smaller class with more defensive players a year after focusing on the offense."

Re: Class of 2018 - BostonCard - 03-22-2017

Hmm, does that mean that one of our other two WR targets have notified the staff that they will be looking elsewhere?

Re: Class of 2018 - BobK - 03-22-2017

Appears not BC.  My question also.  Still great question

Perhaps I should have included this in the quote from the Wilson article as well:

"Stanford only has wide receiver offers out to Jalen Hall, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Alontae Taylor."

FWIW, 24-7 shows both Hall and St. Brown as "Warm" on an offer list where most show as "Cool" or committed elsewhere: http://stanford.247sports.com/Season/2018-Football/Offers

Stanford offered Alontae Taylor as an Athlete.  He's a 4-star Tennessee commit as WR open to other opportunities: http://gridironnow.com/alontae-taylor-im-committed-tennessee-open-new-schools/

So, Wilson would be the fourth offer, and that's probably too many for the expected class size and yield.

I don't think this is the same article linked above, apologies if it is. Michael Wilson's response to the Stanford offer.

+1, and by default, we will have Simi Fehoko coming back from mission.
In other words, we currently offered 5 WRs with 1 signed already for the cardclass 18.
I hope we could focus more on the defensive side, especially LB, CB and S.
In the end of the day, it is not possible for us to win the game by placing 5 WRs on the field without defense.
Most of the defensive recruits we offered show as "cool" or committed elsewhere on 247 really worries me....

This seems like a bit of an overreaction.  It has been reported that the 2018 class will include more defensive players than offensive players.  No more than 2 WRs will be taken, so offering 4 makes sense given historical admissions challenges for WRs.  Nobody is claiming defense won't be put on the field in 5 WR sets (curious comment).  And, the evidence make pretty clear based on recent results, the recruiting moment Stanford has, and just how valued a Stanford offer is these days, that there is no reason to have anything but confidence in the Stanford football program to bring in a very good class of recruits in 2018, 2019, and beyond.

Stanford recruiting is rolling right now because Shaw has established Stanford as a clear Top 10-level program, and it is indisputably the best combination of football and educational opportunity.  Have some faith and confidence in the spoils of having such a strong program!

Who have we signed at WR in 2018?  So far, the only two commits I know of are QB (Jack West) and RB (Justus Woods).

Re: Class of 2018 - BostonCard - 03-23-2017

For the people who know (paging Bob Kinder)... how many slots will we have?  And what do we think is the best allocation?

Simi Fehoko was a 2016 WR recruit (and commit) but is on an LDS mission so is actually class of 2018. Loa Kaufusi is in the same boat, except he's an OLB recruit.

Re: Class of 2018 - BostonCard - 03-23-2017

Thanks for the clarification kuz.  The OP made it sound like the WR was part of this recruiting cycle ("we currently offered 5 WRs with 1 signed already for the cardclass 18.")

Re: Class of 2018 - BobK - 03-23-2017

We have 11 openings  for 2018 recruiting right now.  My guess is 5 more won't return whether it's NFL or no 5th year.  That's 16 with at present counting the mission pair 4 commits.

The following players on the roster would appear to be in their final year of eligibility:
Eric Cotton DE
David Bright OT
Kevin Palma ILB
Peter Kalambayi OLB
Mike Tyler OLB
Ryan Burns QB
Casey Tucker OT ... or OG
CJ Keller LS
Daniel Marx FB
Terrence Alexancer CB

and I guess nominally Harrison Phillips though he has a pretty much automatic case for an injury redshirt for 2015 if he asks for it, as he appeared in only one game.

So, that would be ten without Phillips, eleven with him.
Bob - did you include Phillips or did I miss somebody?

Re: Class of 2018 - BobK - 03-23-2017

10 players on their last season plus one opening

That's 11 without Phillips

Recent article on Amon Ra St. Brown's interest in USC.  Also mentions Michigan, Notre Dame, and Stanford.

Bagged a linebackerdefensive end from GA.

EDIT: Apparently, we are recruiting him at DE and not OLB.

Got offers from Alabama and Wisconsin (among many others), so he's very well regarded by college coaches (if not the recruiting rankings).

TOS is saying OLB although he plays largely DT in HS
