Argh.

There goes the shut out  :o

Re: UCF game thread - OutsiderFan - 09-12-2015

That game proved what we all believed.  Stanford has the weapons on offense to be potent.

31-7 final - BostonCard - 09-12-2015

WE gave up the meaningless touchdown... oh well.

Lots of stuff to clean up, but in a game we had to win, we won.  Inspired effort by the D.

Penalties - 12-137  ???  That won't work against most teams on our schedule.

Re: UCF game thread - CompSci87 - 09-12-2015

From the stands it just seemed like the refs were horrible. Did those watching on television see most of the penalties as being valid?

Re: UCF game thread - Ratmandoo - 09-13-2015

I thought that was a ROUGH game for the refs.. That illegal substitution penalty that got Shaw fired up was terrible. There were never more than 11 people in the huddle. Also, there was a holding penalty called on UCF that turned a 3rd and 2 into a 3rd and 7. I'm not sure why the holding penalty wasn't 10 yards. Anyone else see that?

They also had some real trouble with pass interference calls. They picked up one flag on UCF on a go route to Trent Irwin. And two of the PI calls that went against us were perplexing as well.

Re: UCF game thread - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 09-13-2015

Terribly officiated game.  Reminded me a lot of last year's Washington State game, just some absolute head scratchers.

Re: UCF game thread - dabigv13 - 09-13-2015

Barry J!

That TD run was just plain nasty. This game may have had more great jukes than any single game in Stanford history; Love and McCaffery both had some excellent shake/bake going on today, but I think the Sanders TD run was the most filthy.

It seemed like we were able to get the tempo up a bit, and got Hogan throwing some quick hitters. The slant to McCaffery was a very nice play that I'd love to see more of. Still, I fear that the first half was more demonstrative of our norm than the second half. Glad to get the W though.

It may have seemed that way, dabigv, but I am told that he isn't very good.  He sure fooled me on that run.  And he had another shorter beauty earlier.

The punt from the UCF 34 was unconscionably bad.  But what was even worse was Shaw's justification for punting there and then trying a 52-yarder later, saying that he called FG on the second one because they had the lead.  Either kick the damn FG or go for the first down.  IT WAS THE FIRST QUARTER!!!

I was (unfortunately) at the game last weekend. Sat in a section with a bunch of ex-players. Definitely heard this quite a bit - the word steak-eater was thrown around a couple of times - also some other choice words for the OL.

PS: Yay, first TD of the season!

I take issue with Ben's statement.  Many other programs take these same 4 & 5 star recruits and turn them into beasts.  But it wouldn't hurt to recruit a couple of 2 star guys every year if their chip on the shoulder and deeper hunger might inspire a little more nastiness.

That wasn't a stupid taunting penalty that was a stupid penalty call - completely unjustified.

Finally?  UCF's starting QB injured his finger hitting Kalambayi's helmet in the first quarter.  Feel bad for the kid I read that he broke a finger, may need surgery, and is out for the season.

A good 3 of them were completely bogus calls, but anything more than about 4 or 5 is a big issue.  You would think that by now Garnett would know what is and is not a chop block though...I hope he gets a few dozen up & downs for that.

Barry J has some good jukes but he lacks a gear that would give him breakaway speed.  But my sense is that the RB rotation going forward will largely be McC, Wright, and Love.  Sanders will be lucky to get 10 snaps a game.  But he's still getting a Stanford degree.

I'd say it was a mixed bag, though the officials certainly seemed determined that their presence would be felt.

I saw some calls that were definitely correct, some borderline, a few atrocious - and several I simply missed that had no replays.

One of the bad calls I remember was the holding call on Murphy on the second drive (inexplicably assigned to Wright who was running with the ball).

Some of the PI calls were marginal and I think should not have been called, but I don't remember any where contact simply didn't exist. Not sure what happened on the PI flag they picked up on the deep throw to Irwin. Something odd clearly happened that impeded Irwin on his route, but they never showed a replay so I'm not sure what.

The block by Stallworth on the punt return by McCaffrey seemed marginal, but there were also a few to choose from so summed up that play was probably destined to come back.

There were a set of terribly stupid penalties. Chief among those was the targeting call on Shittu. The hit wasn't needed at all as a) MacGowan was already down and b) the linebacker (can't remember who) had already re-tackled MacGowan as Shittu came flying in - head down.

Breakaway speed is not a feature, true.  But I don't think there is anyone on the team with more ability to make defenders miss.  I understand the apparent limitations in his game and am comfortable with his diminished role in the offense.  However, I think some people have overreacted and now do not give Barry his proper due.

I assume you are referring to this play, which happened in front of my section:  Irwin badly beat the DB, who then grabbed the back of Irwin's jersey.  The grab was brief, but effective.  The jersey was stretched out about as far back as you can imagine and it clearly impeded Irwin, who otherwise would have been wide open with a good chance to catch the ball.  We were joking in the stands that ref must have picked up the flag because it was an uncatchable pass due to the jersey grab.  Presumably ref did not see the grab.

I'm fine with his diminshed role I feel kinda sorry for the kid coming in with such high expectations given his last name.

However, your statement that Sanders' run was the most filthy belies the video...

I'm comfortable with his reduced role I just wish others would be too.  I feel bad for the kid given the unrealistic expectations placed on him because of his last name.

However, your statement that there isn't anyone with more ability to make defenders miss...um no.
