Leach had a really good class. The RB they got, Caleb Perry scares me

Interested to know what are Perry's particular set of skills.

The 247 composite ranks WSU's class #44 on 27 recruits.
That's #9 in the Pac 12.
One four star, 22 three stars.
The RB Perry is Scout's 102 ranked RB, 247's #20 all purpose back (#914 overall).

Previous classes, by 247 composite were:
2016  57th    11th in conf    originally 29 signing - 25 enrollees
2015  41st      8th in conf    originally 26 signing - 23 enrollees
2014  55th      9th in conf    originally 24 signing - 22? enrollees
2013  54th    11th in conf    originally 29 or 30 signing - ? enrollees

On balance it's probably toward the better side of WSU's classes, though this is clearly a program that needs to win games on something other than recruiting site rankings.

Re: Class of 2017 - AthleticsDynasty - 02-03-2017

The RB Perry has sprinter speed 10.7 in the 100 but looks like real football player not just a track star in pads on tape. Leach's RBs at WSU and Texas Tech have always been quick shifty guys, this guy is quick and shifty too but also has legit burner speed.

Since he is from Seattle, it would be interesting to know why Washington didn't offer him, especially if he is that good. They certainly had room for a running back after we stole Wedington from them.

Re: Class of 2017 - Big T - 02-04-2017

Here are some scholarship stats you guys may find interesting. First some context: I'm a lifelong Stanford fan in a family of ND fans. We love college football and will argue about everything, including recruiting rankings. Here is some info I compiled as a part of an email I sent to them.

A top recruiting class every year is a necessary, yet insufficient factor to winning a national championship. Couching counts! However, for Stanford, and to some extent Notre Dame, attempting to compete with Alabama or Ohio State for a top 3 class every is an impossibility. The numbers simply do not add up. Here’s why:

Each team has 85 scholarships available each year. By averaging the amount of kids each year who sign on to Stanford, Alabama, Ohio State, and Notre Dame over the past decade I have calculated the number of years the average scholarship at each school is “worth”. (I’ve attached the excel chart for those interested).

Team       Average # of Commits this Decade     Scholarship Value in Years
Stanford         19.9                                                   4.27
Alabama         26.7                                                   3.18
Ohio State         26.1                                                   3.25
Notre Dame 24.2                                                   3.51

For a Division 1 athlete it probably takes about 3.5 years to graduate since they are on campus year-round. These figures in the table should be very alarming. Urban Meyer and Nick Saban offer scholarships to students who on average are not going to graduate. Conversely, Stanford assumes not only that their athletes are graduating, but that they are going to attend grad school on their football scholarship.

If you are a Stanford fan, and on some level an Irish fan you cannot expect to compete on a rankings system based partly on numbers on a yearly basis. Rather, look to average ranking per recruit. Stanford has been closing the gap on the other three schools listed for a few years. This year, they finished fourth in the nation and were right there with Alabama. Stanford eviscerated Notre Dame the ranking per recruit category this year. Stanford needs to continue this trend to win a national championship. They cannot worry about overall rankings because they players they have will be there longer.

Couching our messages in the correct terms surely is important.

Big T: Don't be offended; typo jokes are a thing here. Everyone gets hit with one from time to time.

To be honest, I think some folks make typos intentionally just to see what CowboyIndian can come up with!  :P

Re: Class of 2017 - Papa John - 02-10-2017

I just noticed the 247sports.com lists decommits per school, and Stanford had zero in the just-completed recruiting cycle!

That seemed remarkable to me, so I dug a bit deeper. Here the decommits for our Pac-12 brethren:
ASU: 4
UA: 11
Cal: 7
CU: 2
UO: 7
OSU: 9
UCLA: 10
USC: 11
Utah: 4
UW: 3
WSU: 11

The average number of decommits for these 11 schools is just over 7, and only Cal and UO had the excuse of head coaching change.

Stanford's results continue to impress when I looked at our nonconference opponents' decommitments from last year:
KSU: 2
ND: 6
Rice: 2
UNC: 4

Just another data point for the uniqueness of Stanford's 2017 class.

As much as I'd like to take the credit, I think "Door #1" might have come from Chad Walker when he was covering recruiting long ago on the old Bootleg.

I quite distinctly remember reading an explanation involving a story about Bob Barker and the Price is Right - where you're watching and deep down you just don't want to know what he is offering from behind door #1.

I guess it's just the kind of colourful and amusing story I expect from you, Terry.
[/quote]

I think I know why you attributed the term "Door #1" to me.

Years ago, I put together a Stanford football glossary, explaining words and phrases that often were used on the Bootleg. One of the terms in my glossary was "Door #1," and I did refer to Monty Hall on "Let's Make a Deal." That probably is the story you had in mind. I wrote the glossary around 2005 and updated it a couple times. Here's a link to the 2012 edition --
http://www.scout.com/college/stanford/story/1213175-the-bootleg-primer-2012-update

So, although I believe Chad Walker coined the term "Door #1," I may have had a role in popularizing it.

[By the way, when I wrote the glossary, the links in the text all worked, but the links appear to have been lost when the Bootleg's software was updated. Also, the Bootleg's management made some unapproved edits to my glossary, so I blame them for the clunky parts!  :-) ]

Here's a feel good article about Dalyn Wade-Perry's journey to Stanford:

http://www.northjersey.com/story/sports/high-school/recruiting/2017/02/11/from-englewood-to-stanford-for-dalyn-wade-perry/97776734/

“To have an opportunity to go to Pope John and now Stanford to better my life … you can’t imagine how appreciative I am,” Wade-Perry said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Geaux Cardinal!

Terry,

Just checked it out to see if there was any pre-1990 lingo I didn't know.  Thanks to the shadyside denizens here I've already picked it up over the years.

Nevertheless, your Rose Bowl reference needs updating.  :D

Path for Englewood's Wade-Perry leads from football field to Stanford

Why is a 330-pound defensive tackle with 25 scholarship offers to play big-time college football taking advanced placement macroeconomics as a senior?

Because Dalyn Wade-Perry isn’t your typical 330-pound defensive tackle.

The Englewood native, who attends Pope John in Sparta, needed this course as well as advanced placement psychology in order to meet Stanford’s academic requirements.

“At first I was like, ‘Damn! I thought I was just going to cruise through my senior year,” Wade-Perry said with a laugh.

“Stanford really made me work for it.”
