Ironically, the coach for those three Broncos teams, Dan Reeves, had won Super Bowl VI as a running back for the Cowboys, but never won it as a coach.
The person in question was a backup QB when he won as a player and won as a coach fairly recently.

Good clues: Doug Peterson?

I suspect the back-up is Doug Pederson who backed up Favre in Green Bay for several years in the 90s and won the Super Bowl with Philly in 2017 (?).
(Ah, I see "Giants" beat me to it unless he is refering to a similarly named player with the spelling Peterson.)

Hope this one hasn't been asked before:
In August, the Mariners retired Ichiro Suzuki's jersey #51.
What is the highest MLB jersey number ever retired for a former player?

Yup, Doug Pederson is the fourth coach.
“As player: Super Bowl XXXI (Packers quarterback)
As coach: Super Bowl LII (Eagles head coach)”
Hat tip to this SI article (who says SI has become useless).

Randy Johnson wore #51, same as Ichiro.
Four former players had a higher number retired.

Not sure what's been "retired" but Drysdale was #53 and Gossage was #54, I think. Both in the HOF but I don't know if their numbers are retired.

The Dodgers retired Drysdale's #53. He's the 4th highest number.
Gossage's #54 was not retired.

I'm guessing this isn't Stanford related, because if a former Stanford player's number has been retired by MLB I would have heard about it.
Any hints?

Not Stanford-related.
Hint #1: He wore a different number for the first half of his career.

Hint #2: He was a catcher.

Got it!
I didn't get to give my final clue: "This player changed his sox once." :-)
MLB teams have retired two higher numbers but not for players:
- St. Louis retired #85 in honor of owner August Busch Jr. who was 85 years old at the time
- Cleveland retired #455 in honor of their fans selling out 455 consecutive games

Fisk is interesting. Rookie of the year in his
third year in MLB, became only the second catcher to lead the league in triples, Tim McCarver was the other in 1965 and Giant Hall of Famer Buck Ewing in 1884. Understandable in Ewing's case, he played at the Polo Grounds where it was 483 feet to the alleys, and it was the first year that pitchers were allowed to throw overhand.
McCarver and Fisk share one other interesting record...both played in four different decades, as did four other catchers, including Rick Dempsey.
31 players played in four decades, including six catchers, four first basemen, seven outfielders, and 12 outfielders. No third baseman has played in four decades, and only one shortstop and one full-time second baseman (I'm not counting Kid Gleason, who was a full-time starting pitcher for eight seasons and otherwise played 2B).
Who were the shortstop and second baseman to play in four decades? Hint: one was a Giant, one was an Athletic.

Omar Vizquel is the SS.
No idea on the 2B.

Correct on Omar!
The second baseman was Eddie Collins, of the Philadelphia A's. Great player. 3,315 hits, 741 SBs, 512 sacrifice hits (most career SH's in MLB history), career .333 BA, .424 OBP, played from 1906 to 1930, also played for the White Sox from 1915 to 1926. 438 2Bs, 187 triples. Great fielder, most assists ever by a second baseman, most games by a 2B, led league in chances, assists, games, fielding percentage and putouts between four and seven times each, only led in errors once.

Giants who played in four decades included Mays (counting all professional leagues), McCovey, Vizquel, Dan Brouthers, Kid Gleason, Bobo Newsom, Jim O'Rourke.
Brouthers was a Giant basically on a technicality. He was the Barry Bonds of his day, 1879 - 1896. He led the NL, PL or AA in 27 separate major categories at one time or another. In the dead ball era, his career BA was .342 (12th all-time), OPS was .943, OPS+ of 171. He had retired for eight years, and in 1904, he played two games for the Giants. He got up five times, didn't get on base.

Minnie Miñoso is the only one I know of. Had his MLB debut in 1949 for Cleveland and his last season was in 1980.

That’s one. The other player was active from the 1890’s to the 1930’s.
