Stanford band members are the type of kids that ...

Aren't stereotypes wonderful things...?  ;)

I suppose it's possible you actually know a member of the Stanford Band and she/he is just as you describe...but I doubt it.

I have a co-worker and a cousin who went. The co-worker very well might have been in the band (I'll ask), and yes he is that type. My cousin is more "preppy" than hipster.

Typical.  The guy admits he didn't see the show (in line for concessions, pointless story about eating a pretzel dropped on floor) before going on a 5 minute rant about how much he hated the band.  He is outraged and offended, our ages two most common public emotions.

I just watched the halftime show that is linked earlier in this thread.  My favorite part was when the Iowa fans started booing - made me laugh because that is exactly what we wanted.  The flying pig at the end is one of the best formations I have seen.

I'm looking forward to the Rice game only because someone said they have a scatter band.  I can't wait to see them and boo them off the field when they make fun of us.  http://www.thecardboard.org/board/Smileys/akyhne/cheesy.gif  That is going to be a blast.

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - FarmBoy - 01-05-2016

Rice does have a scatter band and the tales of how they survived an angry Texas A&M mob make anything our guys and gals go through sound trivial.

It's kind of funny to describe the band as a bunch of hipsters considering they've essentially done the same thing for 20+ years (maybe longer but I don't have personal experience) and the idea of a "hipster" is a fairly recent development.

I do agree that one of the biggest problems with the current incarnation of the band is that it is toothless. All of the censorship and restrictions do make me question whether the style is viable any longer. It worked best when they were allowed free rein to ask deep questions like "These Irish, Why Must They Fight?" and serenade the OJ trial.

Cowboy1, I am a big fan of the Marching Owl Band for no reason other than their show Todd Graham's Inferno (when Todd Graham bolted Rice for Tulsa) is one of the cleverest and most biting satires you will see.  If what they do for Stanford is at this level, I will stand and cheer their effort.

Well, the LSJUMB was not entirely free to do either of those things, as both resulted in various penalties from the administration.

I hope Rice really brings it. I see a version of the Gong Show breaking out.  J.P. Morgoooooone........

Fail. Epic fail.  When you show up at a murder trial and play "She's Not There", that isn't funny, it's evil.  (Yeah, yeah I know that wasn't an 'official' function, but they had their 'uniforms' on and were representing the University. There are limits for decent behavior in society. That was so far over the line as to demonstrate a borderline personality disorder.)

The LSJUMB has existed in its current, mostly student-run form since 1963.  Their history of annoying the opponents and pushing beyond the boundaries of good taste goes way back.

From The Stanford Daily, September 1977 -
Quote:The Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band has problems with its hate mail. "There isn't enough," said manager Rich Johnson. "We like to keep a large inventory of hate mail around all the time. Except for the death of Mao show at the San Jose State game last year, nothing got a really healthy response. That bothers us."

I'm looking forward to seeing Rice too.

What the Stanford Band needs is some competition.  If there were another scatter band in the Pac-12 they'd have to work a lot harder.

20+ years ??  Try 40+ !!  ;D  The LSJUMB has been scandalizing college football since at least the 1972 Rose Bowl, when they spelled out "SMUT" [Stanford Marching Unit Thinkers] on national TV.  And, IIRC, in the 1971 Rose Bowl [or might have been 1972], they dropped trou during the show to reveal that everyone was wearing surfer shorts.

And, of course, any OF will tell you that most of the really good charts still being played ["Yellow Riverrrrrrr"] are more than 20 years old.

"Hipster"?  Hardly.

Now, get off my lawn...  ;D

Can we all agree a band nerd is a band nerd is a band nerd?

I entirely agree with you that was in bad taste, but it's not as if that was the only OJ Simpson joke ever offered.  Some kids get drunk sometimes; other kids go over the line and do things that really aren't in the best of taste.  But, calling it "borderline personality disorder" seems a little strong [although if the Band got wind of that description, it might very well be prominently displayed in LSJUMB PR material...]

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - Nan3cy - 01-05-2016

I think the definitive word on LSJUMB was offered by Don Kennedy during the spotted owl kerfuffle. He paraphrased a (bogus) review of Tom Lehrer and said "Their muse is not fettered by such inhibitions as taste."

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - jacketree - 01-05-2016

Maybe a little strong, but can we agree that playing She's Not There at a murder trial goes beyond merely "bad taste"?

I guess exponentially bad taste.  Still think there is something beyond drunk and stupid there, but yes if you are that drunk, you can be that stupid.  Can't be defended IMO.

I did say borderline.  I'm no psychiatrist.

I can go with "exponentially bad taste."

Of course, I was on the field for the infamous Patty Hearst halftime show, so I'm not sure how my standards should be calibrated.  Also, there was the 1974 formation [proposed, but, IIRC, didn't actually make it onto the field] relating to Richard Nixon when he had phlebitis:  Song:  Jim Croce's One Less Set of Footsteps; Formation:  A wheelchair.

I'm guessing that probably wouldn't have been one of your favorites, either... [But, hey, according to Wikipedia, The Washington Post actually lampooned this in an editorial cartoon, so the Band wasn't wholly alone ...]

@Spiny:  Thanks for the links to the two MOB shows.  They were great and hopefully we can get something worth talking about from them.  I will even give up my half time BEERRUN for them.

@Qrocks Agreed! They went too far. We tend to keep them on a long leash, but definitely need to tighten it from here on out.

I'm sure the Alumni Association has no authority on this matter, but what are they doing tweeting such a response? I suppose they are just trying to placate the offended masses, but if sticking to an approved, benign script, is going too far...

[Edited to paste @StanfordAlumni's original tweet, which has now been deleted]

Sorry for being late to the party, but what kind of sanctimonious, over-reaching, condescending, pretending-to-have-authority-where-you-have-none, acting-like-you-speak-for-all-Stanford-alumni bullcrap tweet was that?

I don't even particularly like the band, but I sure as heck don't see how @stanfordalumni has any right to talk like that. And that apology was lame. Wow I'm pissed. Thanks Yvonne and anybody else who spoke up.

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - 76lsjumb - 01-05-2016

So...when did the Alumni Association hire Carly Fiorina to do their tweeting?

Re: Iowa fans discover the Stanford Band - And are very angry and very confused - JJJ - 01-05-2016

Clearly CrazedZooChimp already knew this (and thus posted the Rose Bowl shows that way) but I didn't really think to follow the embedding source and had no clue until a very helpful LSJUMB facebook person explained it to me (they actually respond very quickly and positively to messages!). You can subscribe to LSJUMB Graphix on YouTube (or just check it every so often) for some (not all) shows that are uploaded.
