Bareinsiders confirm - Redrum - 01-12-2017

Wilcox...Wisconsin DC.

Only  the young and optimistic would take on Kal's problems.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - fullmetal - 01-12-2017

Wilcox just got to Wisco this season.  He was at U$C for the two seasons before that (and at UW for two seasons before that).

I can see why they picked him  #7 in total D, was DC and prominent public university, knows and appreciates the Pac-21 having worked at USC, Cal and Oregon.  Makes sense from that perspective.

What I don't understand is (a) why Wisconsin hired him last January when USC was #65 in total defense and (b) what made him so attractive as he took Wisconsin's #2 defense in 2015 and turned it into a #7 defense in 2016.

Wilcox has been at five schools in ten years.  I will say, however, sitting here in the frozen tundra, that I understand wanting to leave the Midwest for California.

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/01/12/cal-coaching-search-nears-conclusion-with-justin-wilcox-jake-spavital-as-finalists/

A few things caught my interest:

Quote:After firing Dykes, whose dalliances with Baylor and Houston angered the Bears, athletic director Mike Williams said he wanted a coach who would remain at Cal for the long term.

So they hire a coach who has been at five schools in 10 years.  I realize the life of a coordinator is nomadic, but he's not someone who has restrained himself for jumping at a better opportunity when it presents itself.

Quote:He is expected to receive at least $1.5 million annually from the Bears and will likely be the lowest-paid coach in the Pac-12.

What does it say about Cal's commitment to football?

Quote:The news was first reported by FoxSports.com’s Bruce Feldman, who broke the story about Cal firing Sonny Dykes last weekend.

Wilner needs to up his game.  He's the college sports beat writer for the local newspaper, and he was scooped twice in the span of a week by Bruce Feldman.  Sad.

Navy guys barely broke a sweat on this one.

(Over there I am jacketree, not eljefe91 the other Stanford fan.)

Thank God.  I would have been forced to register on BearInsider just to defend the honor of the TO, although some of them seemed to get it.

Underwhelmed by Wilcox, which is concerning.  It's always the initially underwhelming guys who seem to do the best.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - yvonne - 01-13-2017

I think it's a good call for them: young so he wants to prove himself, in charge of top 10 defenses, and familiar with the Pac-12. Sure, his multiple moves means he'll probably bolt if a better opportunity arises, but we weren't able to get a long-term coach when Harbaugh came along, but he left it much better than he found it. If Wilcox leaves there better than he found it, they will become more attractive during the next hiring phase.

Now, he has to do the opposite of Sonny, and hire a good offensive staff.

Well, I was pretty underwhelmed by Sonny Dykes and that didn't seem to kill us.

On the other hand, most of our competitors were pretty underwhelmed by Harbaugh, and that did kill them. [To be clear, that statement only holds for the news that he would become Stanford's coach, not Harbaugh the man. Underwhelmed is about the last word I would use for any interaction with the man himself.]

Wilner is not the beat writer. He's a blogger and opinion columnist.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - Goose - 01-13-2017

There are many important differences between Harbaugh and Wilcox. Harbaugh you had heard of from his NFL days. He also had been a winning head coach, albeit at a non-BCS level. Wilcox got fired at USC, partly because of them being bad on defense, but also because of conduct, I believe. He hasn't been a head coach. Now, he may be a great head coach, but he isn't as credible (to me at least) as JH. I think that will apply to players also. His bouncing around the PAC-12 also probably has given him a reputation that may not help him with players.
Selecting Wilcox because you had identified him as an under-the-radar great choice, so you fired Dykes and hired him immediately would make me think this was possibly a good hire and give it some credibility. At least it is a plausible story. Dumping Dykes, flailing around looking, and then hiring him is not a good look for the Cal AD, IMHO. "Is that all there is?". It is a roll of the dice, at best. Well, at least he's cheap.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - larkinforever - 01-13-2017

Yes, the original narrative was that the 6-week period between the end of Cal's season and Dykes firing was explainable because they were looking for a good replacement and didn't want to fire Dykes until they had the next coach ready to hire. Those with responsibility and authority to hire had a plan and weren't just flailing and directionless and didn't miss out on speaking with the best end-of-season candidates simply because of incompetence. While we certainly don't have all the facts, a week later that narrative seems somewhat questionable.

You're taking my note way too seriously.

Firstly, it was just noting the effectiveness of the "underwhelmed" criterion.
Secondly, I thought it was kind of funny.

I agree it was funny. I did understand the "underwhelmed" criterion not maybe applying in all cases! I was just saying that Harbaugh was less underwhelming. If the underwhelming factor works, Wilcox is the next Bear Bryant.

And the integrity of the Cal program gets another powerful boost if they hire, as rumored, Tosh to be DC. NOT.

After all the hatred and discontent over how he left, I can't believe that they would accept, let alone want, him back.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - jacketree - 01-13-2017

All of Michigan's hatred and discontent over Harbaugh's comments about their academic rigor, made while he was at Stanford, sort of evaporated too.  Funny how time wounds all heels, or, wait.....  Remember UM's AD saying he was going to lose Harbaugh's number or words to that effect.

Yes, people do change their tune when the wind blows the other direction. However, I would argue the dynamic was different. Michigan, in their heart, always loved JH. They said negative things because they felt rejected. JH never actually damaged Michigan. Criticized, yes, damaged no. Lupoi actually stole players he had recruited to Cal when he went to Washington. It wasn't just that he left. He did real, material, and actual damage to Cal. I would think that is a lot harder to forgive. It is still just a rumor, AFAK.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - CornFed - 01-13-2017

Plus, was it Lupoi whose name came up when he was at Washington and they were accusing us of having players fake injuries in order to stop the clock?  Then it turned out he had actually been previously caught doing that very thing when he was at Cal.  Or maybe the other way around.

Spavital leaves to West Virginia.
