The famous Frank Duffy for George Foster

Re: OT: Giants outfield - lex24 - 01-24-2018

Then there was Bobby Murcer for Bobby Bonds, the first trade of $100,000 a year players. Two years later traded to the Cubs for Bill Madlock.

Re: OT: Giants outfield - lex24 - 01-24-2018

Bobby Bonds wa a big favorite of mine. Awful trade. But I think B.B. had his demons.

A friend of mine at Santa Clara played baseball with Bonds at Serra High School.  Said he was a pretty regular guy back then.  No ego, no odd behavior.

Re: OT: Giants outfield - Phogge - 01-25-2018

That was Barry at Serra. Despicable person. Robby Thompson once told me after Bonds tried to rip me a new AH, "He's a *****", but he can play.

Bobby's demons were of the alcohol variety, chiefly.

Maybe he picked it up in Arizona...

#5.  Kerry Wood and some other guy.

#11. Youngblood. My feeble mind is blanking on his first name. Edit - Joel.

Re: OT: Giants outfield - lex24 - 01-25-2018

Nope. I’ve talked to those that knew him at Serra. But think of Serra - Brady, Bonds, Swan and Jeffries. Only other Bay Area school that compares is McClymonds.  Russell. Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson (played together there) and Jim Hines.

Paul Silas, the Pointer brothers, Joe Ellis, Curt Flood, Ernie Lombardi (Baseball HOF) and MC Hammer who was Sancho Panza to Charlie Finley and may have done something else.

Correct.  Kerry Wood and Bob Feller (17 yrs old and 17 Ks)

Joel Youngblood was a center fielder for the Mets; in 1982, they were playing the Cubs in Chicago, Youngblood struck out his first at-bat but knocked a single his next.  After the Cubbies had retired the Mets in the top of the inning, Youngblood was informed he was traded to the Expos (now defunct), he arrived in Philadelphia (where the Expos were playing the Phillies) mid-way through the game.

#6.  They were both juiced.

Re: OT: Giants outfield - BobK - 01-25-2018

7, Bobo Newsom

Bagwell and Thomas RH 1B    Thomas a very good college TE Bagwell??

Bagwell totally denied using PEDs in a 2010 interview with ESPN, and he wasn't linked in the Mitchell report.  he wasn't in the list of 104 names inadvertently released as having tested positive for PEDs.  His career numbers went down markedly after age 35.  He was pretty consistent from 1991 when he came in the league.  Frank Thomas was just a big dude, I think.  He came in at 6'5" 240 lbbs, and left with the same measurements.

What I was referring to is that they both have the same birthday, May 27, 1968.

Good answer.  Bobo played for 11 separate teams, and actually was traded among those teams 14 times.

Octavio Dotel pitched for the Mets, Astros, A’s, Yankees, Royals, Braves, White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, Cardinals and Tigers.

Re: OT: Giants outfield - teejers1 - 01-25-2018

Mick, I was being flippant (although it wouldn't surprise me if both of those guys were juiced).  And on that note, I don't consider the "inadvertently released" list of names linked to PEDs to be any kind of definitive compilation.  Nor was it intended to be, was it?

Re: Random Baseball Trivia - Mick - 01-25-2018

(01-25-2018, 06:28 AM)Mick link Wrote:1. Why are road uniforms gray?  Because in the old days, they didn’t wash uniforms on the road, so they got grimy and turned gray.
2. Who is the only player to play in three straight World Series for three separate teams?  Don Baylor, 1986 Red Sox, 1987 Twins, 1988 Oakland A’s
3. Who is the only World Series MVP from the losing team?  Bobby Richardson, 1960 New York Yankees.
4. Which player made one error as a first baseman, two errors as a second baseman and three errors as a third baseman?  Name team and season.  Pete Castiglione, 1950 Pittsburgh Pirates.
5. What two pitchers struck out their age, in terms of number of batters in a single game?  Bob Feller, 17 and 17 in 1936 for the Indians, and Kerry Wood who did 20 and 20 for the Cubs in 1998.
6. In 1994, Jeff Bagwell won the NL MVP and Frank Thomas won the AL MVP.  What else did they have in common?  They were both born on May 27, 1968
7. Which player has played for more major league teams than any other and how many?  Octavio Dotel pitched for the Mets, Astros, A’s, Yankees, Royals, Braves, White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, Cardinals and Tigers.
8. What did Cincinnati Reds pitcher Ken Ash do on July 27, 1930?  Became the only pitcher to win a game on one pitch.  He came in in the top of the ninth inning, with no outs and two on, the batter hit into a triple play.  Ash was pinch-hit for, and the Reds rallied to win.
9. Outfielder Jack McCarthy played for the Cubs in 1905.  He holds a unique single game record.  What is it?  McCarthy threw out all three runners at home plate in one inning, making him the only OF ever to do so.
10. What was strange about the 1957 minor league trade the Dodgers and Cubs made?  The Dodgers and Cubs traded their entire minor league teams for each other.  The Cubs farm team was the Los Angeles Angels and the Dodgers were planning to move there, so the Dodgers traded their Fort Worth affiliate to the Cubs.
11. Who is the only player to have a hit for two teams in two separate cities on the same day?  Joel Youngblood was a center fielder for the Mets; in 1982, they were playing the Cubs in Chicago, Youngblood struck out his first at-bat but knocked a single his next.  After the Cubbies had retired the Mets in the top of the inning, Youngblood was informed he was traded to the Expos (now defunct), he arrived in Philadelphia (where the Expos were playing the Phillies) mid-way through the game.
12. What is the only team to turn two triple plays in one game?  Bonus question, what was unique about those two teams on the next day?
The Twins had a triple play in the fourth and eighth innings in their game against the Red Sox on July 17, 1990.  The next day, the two teams combined for the most double plays ever in one game.  The Twins lost both games.

The rest of the answers are in red above.

Nope, definitely not definitive.  Lots of 'roid abusers.
