Hope we don't see a mass defection of recruits.  How does Shaw explain this season's meltdown to prospects?

How does he explain this to recruits?  Let me take a stab.  Injuries, inches, a few bad breaks, the inevitable vagaries of football, youth -- O, and execution.  Kelly went 4-8 in 2016, but has bounced back for three straight 10+ win seasons.  Does Shaw do the same?

Next year starts now.

You are being too kind.  It was a disastrous year.  Absolutely miserable.

Streaks ended:
10 game winning streak against UCLA -- gone, and at home to a UCLA team that will not go bowling.
9 game winning streak against Cal -- axe back in Berkeley, loss at home to a Cal team that is barely bowl eligible.
10 year bowl game streak: done, over.
Home winning streak against Notre Dame ended after wins in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.
And that strip sack at the end of the game was just salt in the wounds. 38-24 was still respectable.  45-24 looks just awful.

So glad this season is over.  At least basketball is off to a promising start.

But not many will leave early to NFL

Perhaps.  The season was so bad that a few may be back next season to improve their draft stock.  But: if these individuals do not see the program trending upwards next year, they will bail and take their chances as undrafted free agents.

Interestingly, EJ Smith was at the game, with the fam in tow.  Per Tim Brando, he was just admitted as well.  Emmitt had this bemused look on his face the whole time the camera was on him.

Yes, he was just admitted and has offers from a number of universities, including Ohio State.  I will be curious to see his final decision.

After 2016, Kelly fired his defensive line coach, TE coach/special teams coordinator and replaced the director of football strength and conditioning. He had already fired the defensive coordinator during the season.

LSU is just shredding Texas A&M.  28-0 with eight and change in the 2nd quarter.

So you're saying it would behoove The Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football to take similar action?  I'm with you on that.

Colorado just went up 7-0 vs. Utah late in the 1st quarter.

I would be OK with Utah missing its CFP chance.
I would be OK with Colorado winning.
I am not OK with USC going to the Pac-12 CG.
Therefore Go Utes!

RE: Next starts now: Notre Dame Game Thread - Mick - 11-30-2019

i agree this has been a perfect storm of a year, but it's been one that's been years in the making, and, in my opinion, entirely preventable.

I thought Shaw was a great caretaker, and a perfect segue to the Harbaugh Ridiculousness and Recruiting Shenanigans.

But this year's fiasco has been years in the making, and the man responsible for it is David Shaw.

There's talent on the team, true.  That talent was gassed.  Being out of shape and having a comical number of injuries are related, I do believe.

I wish we had better coordinators and assistants.  Maybe we'll get them.  Maybe we won't.

BTW, I predicted 38-14. Slightly better than I predicted.

Yeah, we'll see what happens in the offseason.
Whatever Shaw does, I'm sure we will get complaints that it isn't enough.

OK, how about this one.
I'm sure Shaw will do whatever it takes for us to win the NC next year.
Is that better?

RE: Next starts now: Notre Dame Game Thread - OutsiderFan - 12-01-2019

Was able to see a good chunk of the game when flipping away from the way more important games being played at the same time.

I honestly could not believe Shaw punted on 4th down with 8 seconds left, and his post-game comment about it was breathtaking. He basically said he was more afraid of the opponent having a shot to score than he was willing to take a chance himself. That mentality is just awful in a head coach. He even said they have a play that would use up that much time, but was too afraid to call it. Amazing.

But even when Stanford was leading 17-14, on its penultimate drive of the first half, why in the hell did he not run the ball?  ND had only one time out.  Stanford threw 2 clock stopping incomplete passes.  I believe Stanford had the ball inside ND territory with about 1:20 to go, so worst case scenario, Stanford would have punted with 40 secs left on the clock, with ND having no timeouts, probably snapping the ball from their own 20. And if Kelly didn't call TO, the half would have just about ended on a last second punt or Stanford taking an end zone shot. IOW, David Shaw's inconsistent game management led to his team being behind at half time when it had no business trailing.

I'm ready for the Davis Mills era to begin in full swing next year.  He is so damn talented. Just get him and the OL healthy and even with the offense not being the most stress inducing for a defense, Stanford should put up big offensive numbers in 2020. The athleticism he has pops off the screen.

Stanford has to do something about its field to improve the drainage!

We had the best draining field in the country before they rebuilt the stadium. Progress.
