RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - CompSci87 - 11-25-2021

All right now!

I did have a little trouble with FloHoops. Twice the stream hung and couldn't recover by itself. Both times it was immediately fine after I stopped and restarted it.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - BillBradley - 11-25-2021

Got 'em! Lots of mistakes, yet we still prevailed. Monster game from Brink. Tara said repeatedly she was the difference and how proud of her she is.
If you would have told me before the game we would get sub-par performances from Lexie and Jones (although she did do a nice job on Berger), I would have thought there would be no way for us to win.

Not trying to pick on her, but I'm still scratching my head as to why Wilson is getting so many minutes. She hardly contributed today, even defensively.  She has trouble feeding the post, is offensively timid, handed them a layup at the end of the game...I don't get it. Maybe I'm not giving her enough credit for her leadership. Jump's defense has improved a ton and she's so much better offensively. It was nice seeing Hamilton out there too. Looks like she can be a contributor.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - 81alum - 11-25-2021

1) A gutsy win in a game that was tight the whole way.  The best kind of win, although a great deal to improve.

2) I thought the Belibi-Brink combo worked very well in the first half, and am not sure why Belibi was hardly seen in the second half.  Very odd.

3) Jones was not that effective.  Clearly she is not all the way back from whatever injury she had.  Tara used her for offense but sometimes took her out for defense, and when she stayed in, her defense was poor.

4) Cam may not have been efficient, but it was effective.  I have wondered why we have not used her like this much more often.  The first game really when she was the main focus nearly every possession she was in.  But I agree with others that Cam is learning how NOT to foul.  She was far superior in that regard today.  Maybe she was heavily featured because she was able to limit her fouling.  21 points and 22 rebounds and 5 blocks is terrific, but any featured post HAS to do better than 1/6 free throws.

5) We need the old Lexie back.

6) The team's slumps on three point shooting (3/12) and free throw shooting (8/18)both continue.  Not good.  Let's break those slumps beginning tomorrow.

7) 16 turnovers to Indiana's 7 nearly cost us the game.  A fair number of them were unforced.

8) Some poor decisions, such as when Wilson did not run clock and thus gave the ball back to Indiana for a basket.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Indiana 1030am Thanksgiving Day - 2006alum - 11-25-2021

A win is a win is a win. Glad to see Cameron Brink emerging to become the star player she is destined to be - and keeping the fouls down is absolutely crucial to getting her enough playing time to rack up stat lines like that.

The thing that kills me the most about the free throw shooting is that it's the best defense to aggressive, pressing defenses, because they know if they foul you they give away 2. Since we're already not very good at handling pressing defenses, we really need to make our free throws to keep 'em honest.

But I'll take it, and one more thing to be thankful for today!

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - Baez87 - 11-25-2021

Overheard from our small contingent of fans after the game:
“They were ahead for about a minute at the beginning of the game, we led the rest of the game.”
“Fran Belibi had an impressive spurt at the beginning of the game — she was the difference.”
“We won the first quarter and tied the rest, so Fran was the difference maker.”
“Thanks to Cam’s 22 rebounds, we out-rebounded them 59-37. Another difference maker.”
“Brink had 5 turnovers, so the rest of the team had 11. Chalk that up, in part, to how Indiana mauled her in the paint.”
“Haley didn’t seem to have the intensity today at either end. She seems to be recovering from whatever held her out of the last game.”
Jump had the most minutes (28) except for Brink.”
“Glad we won this one!”

The replay of the ASU game only has the last 3 minutes.

If FloHoops was the only way to see this, what are the "CBS Sports Network" booths doing at both ends of the Baha Mar court?

But, yes, I had no problems with the video or the announcers.  Good job.

OTOH, the MPSF Men's Water Polo matches archived at FloSwimming (FloHoops gives access to all sports) are only 3. None of those 3 include Stanford. Those matches were less than a week ago.

Washington State up 18-7 over Miami after 1Q
14 Wash. St turnovers at the half. Tied at 25.
USC is up by 14 half way through 3rd Q vs Seton Hall.

I've been trying to remember the last time we had a post performance like today by Brink, with 21 points and 22 rebounds.  I presume it was with Chiney.  I don't remember McCall ever having a day like that.  Did Alana Smith ever have that kind of inside domination?

EDIT:  Smith had a 34 point/15 rebound day against Washington State.  15 rebounds seems to have been her high.

In fact, this was a bit Chiney-like in the flow of the game.

Nice to see WSU and USC do well today too.  The Pac 12 is strong.

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - martyup - 11-25-2021

Cardano-Hillary is one of the toughest point defenders we will face.  She was brilliant in the NCAA tourney last season and instrumental in the Hoosier's win against NC State in the Elite 8.  I thought that Lacie did a pretty good job bringing the ball up the court against her.  She gave up a steal, but that is Cardano's forte.

Lacie outperformed her sister today, but Lexie had an uncharacteristic off-day.

Was wondering the same thing. Looks like today's 22 rebounds puts Brink in a 5-way tie for 3rd place. Nneka once had 23 at Oregon, but Chiney had 24 against Oregon.

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - 81alum - 11-25-2021

One point to emphasize.  Brink got 5 blocks and only 2 fouls, and the difference in her defense was visible--she was so much more upright and her arms stayed vertical.  She seemed transformed.  Let's hope that "the light went on" and she can now play this well consistently.    This was a breakthrough for her on defense, I think.

Arizona pulled it out on a buzzer beater.  The Pac 12 continues its winning ways.

I was in Seattle for Mikaela Ruef’s 16 points and 22 rebounds against Washington. According to the team stats, Brink’s 22 rebounds is a tie for third all time on the Stanford list. Only the Ogwumike’s have more.

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - M T - 11-25-2021

FloHoops schedule for the Cancun tourney was wrong.  USC played and easily beat Seton Hall today.  USC will play UCF Saturday at 1PM PST (not 6PM tonight).  [And, by the way, that's the PAC-12 team, not the other USC]

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - chimera - 11-25-2021

Busy on Thanksgiving so did not watch.  Lots of great commentary here for those that missed the game.  Wow, FT shooting has to get better, and by has to I mean there is nowhere to go but up, so up it will go, hopefully very, very soon.  Glad Jones was able to play and hope she gets back into the swing of things soon.  Two more tough games and not much rest.  I don't love how this shakes out.  But that's what the schedule says, so go, go, go.

Saw a story about the game that said this: "Haley Jones returned to Stanford's lineup after missing the Cardinal's win over Gonzaga for an undisclosed illness. She played 22 minutes and finished with eight points. Jones had her left ankle taped in between the third and fourth quarters.

“Haley did well, she’s doing well,” VanDerveer said. “She gave us some really good minutes, she’s fine.”

So Jones was maybe ill and definitely had an ankle taped, according to the story.

While these games are important for RPI or whatever replaced it, I'd bet Tara would say these are more important, win or lose, for experience for the PAC-12 and NCAA Tournaments.  Take the easier road now and it hurts you later.

The downside of this boot camp experience is the possibility of injuries.

I just looked at the full game +/-.  I don't think anyone here would be surprised at the negative leaders: Wilson, Jerome, Jones.

The by-far leader on the positive side of the +/- might surprise some, even most, people.  (Hint:  Brink tied for 3rd with 2 others on the team at +4.)

Indeed one person here characterized her as having an uncharacteristic off-day.  Perhaps it is too easy to look at offensive stats, and not how the team does relative to the other team.

Brink got the headlines.  Lexie got the win.

Sadly Lexie fouled out. Wasn’t in at the end

I like the upside and tough games.  It does hurt to see our talented frosh get so little or zero playing time.  Hard to develop fully when they don't get to play.  I would have preferred a schedule that had a couple more not cupcakes but teams where the frosh and the bench in general could get more time.  Right now we are deeper on paper than in reality and that may not change much if the frosh and players like Emma-Nnopu, Hamilton, and Van Gytenbeek don't get out there.

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - martyup - 11-25-2021

I would like to see two of the following three on the court at all times: Brink, Belibi, and Prechtel.  Any one of these will draw defenders in the paint, leaving the other open.  This worked many times against Indiana.  Also, this will give us dominance in rebounding.

I thought that today Jones was a liability more than an asset.  I wish she would make better decisions in passing and shot selection.  We know she can be great, but she doesn't always play great.  Her lackluster performance was likely related to whatever kept her out of the Gonzaga game.

IMO, Wilson is not establishing herself as a solid starter on this team.  Unless she improves, I can see her minutes diminish.  She played 17 minutes today.  Perhaps her true value will show through when she has to guard a top player, like Zia Cooke.

Such a great stat! It does surprise me some, because she did have an off-day in most of the statistical categories. But it's not a shocker. Lexie and Lacie are invaluable to the team. Their floor games are superb and they are absolutely relentless competitors. They lift their teammates up and make everyone around them better.

You can see this team finding their way and the coaching staff is figuring out the rotations. This team has it in them to repeat. I would say South Carolina is the favorite right now, especially at their place, but we're going to gain ground throughout the year. If/when we start hitting 3's, lookout.

Go Card!

I was thinking the same thing, Brink's performance seemed very Chiney-like to me.  And we have been waiting for that kind of post player for a very long time.  Alanna Smith may have had high scoring games but she was always a hybrid player who maybe hit a bunch of 3's in addition to her post moves to score a lot of points.  This game was dump it into Brink and the defense could not stop her.  And a lot of the shots she missed seemed very make-able.  She could have scored a lot more.  What I also love about her game that is Chiney-like is the offensive rebounding and the ability to go up quickly with the rebound and score.  We have had a lot of posts in recent years who get the offensive rebound and be very hesitant with the ball.  Kaylee Johnson comes to mind.  Great rebounder but would always dribble the ball out and let the defense reset and we would have to grind and grind in the half court again.

RE: WBB: Stanford 69 Indiana 66 Happy Thanksgiving - martyup - 11-25-2021

I just saw an ESPN blurb that claims that Brink's 20-20-5-5 was the first by a player vs an AP-ranked opponent in the last 20 seasons.
