RE: WBB: Stanford vs. South Florida Friday 9am -
M T - 11-26-2021
The replay is up on FloHoops if you want to analyze it. It starts a couple of minutes into the 2nd Quarter.
Since we have no video of Stanford getting down by 10 points and giving up all the rebounds, I thought I'd look at the PxP.
It looks like a lot of those USF offensive rebounds were either us knocking (sometimes as a block) the ball out of bounds, or as a tie-ball. (The stats don't give enough info to distinguish that.) Most of those ORs were without points.
Prechtel and Wilson started, as did Lexie, Lacie, and Brink. Apparently USF got the tip. Then missed a 3, which Prechtel rebounded.
Wilson's 3pt attempt got blocked, and pulled down by USF.
USF tried a 2, missed, but got the OR. Lexie then stole the ball.
Prechtel then was charged with an offensive foul (TO).
33(?!) seconds later, USF got a lay up.
USF fouled Brink on a shot. Prechtel was replaced by Jones. (Standard Tara: Make a foul and you get to sit a while)
Brink went 1 of 2 FTs, missing the 2nd. USF got the rebound.
20 seconds later, USF missed a layup. Lacie pulled down the rebound.
USF fouled Brink on a shot.
Brink again went 1 of 2 FTs, missing the 2nd. USF got the rebound.
Wilson fouled on a USF shot. Wilson replaced by Jump. Brink replaced by Belibi.
USF makes both FT.
Lacie misses a 3pt try. Rebound to USF
USF fast breaks & gets a layup.
Jump misses a 3pt try. Belibi gets the OR.
Lexie is charged with a turnover 2 seconds later.
6:00 2-6 Jump is replaced by Bosgana.
Belibi blocks a shot out of bounds or there is a tie ball with possession to USF (USF OR)
Belibi then fouls on a shot. USF makes 2 FT.
Jones misses a 2pt jumper. Rebound to USF.
Lacie blocks a USF shot out of bounds or there is a tie ball with possession to USF. (USF OR)
Belibi is replaced by Brink.
6 seconds later USF misses a shot but gets the rebound. (USF OR)
The put-back is missed and pulled down by Lexie.
4:56 Foul on USF.
After the media timeout, Brink makes a layup (assist by Lexie). 4-8
USF misses a shot; shooter gets her own rebound and misses the putback. (USF OR)
USF gets a long rebound but then misses an immediate 3PT (USF OR)
Lexie pulls down that rebound and starts a fast break.
Lacie passes to Lexie who drains a 3PT shot. 7-8.
Apparently there is an out-of-bounds during USF's possession or a tie ball with possession to USF.
Prechtel replaces Brink.
USF misses a 3PT shot, Rebound to USF but the putback is missed (USF OR)
USF gets the rebound on that. A quick pass to the 3pt line for a 3pt shot (USF OR)
That 3PT is missed, but USF gets the rebound. (USF OR)
USF misses a jumper. Lexie gets the rebound.
Note that was 3 quick USF OR without points. Brink was out; Prechtel was in.
USF fouls Stanford (non-shooting).
13 seconds later, USF steals the ball from Bosgana.
Jones blocks a layup by USF out of bounds. (USF OR)
USF turns the ball over.
Lexie misses a jumper; USF rebound.
USF misses a 3PT attempt. Rebound by Lexie.
Bosgana misses a 3PT shot; USF rebound & fast break.
USF hits a 3PT shot.
Brink misses a jumper, but Lexie gets a OR.
Lexie's putback is blocked by USF and rebounded by the blocker.
USF hits a 2.
Lacie turns the ball over out of bounds or is tied up with possession to USF.
Lexie & Lacie are replaced by Jump and Hamilton.
USF misses a layup; rebound by Jones.
Jones misses a 3PT shot. Tie ball? Possession to Stanford.
Hamilton commits an offensive foul.
Layup by USF.
Layup by Brink with assist by Jones as time runs out in Q1. 9-15.
-----------------
Hamilton is replaced by Jerome to start the 2nd.
USF makes a jumper.
Jones misses a jumper; Rebound to USF
USF misses a 3pt shot; Rebound to Brink.
Brink makes a layup with an assist by Jones. 11-17
USF makes a 3PT shot.
Non-shooting foul by USF.
Belibi, Lexie, Lacie, Iriafen come in for Jerome, Bosgana, Brink, Jump.
Lexie misses a jumper but Iriafen gets an OR, and she gets fouled.
Iriafen misses both FT; USF gets the rebound.
The video has returned at 8:15 Q2. Score: 11-20.

3 players on the bench never took off their red sweatshirt. Jana might have been the one next to active players. She got up & cheered with no sign of injury.

Is there a limit on the number of players a team can suit up for a game?

I could speculate and say that perhaps she wanted to show Brink that she cannot do it all herself and needs the other bigs in the game to help the team. Perhaps she was challenging Demetre to prove she should be a starter on this team. Perhaps she was sending a message to Wilson that she must produce on the floor or sit on the bench. Perhaps she was signaling to Jones that she trusts her and wants her to play through her slump.
Whatever the reasons, I trust that they were carefully considered by Tara. Tara might not have valued a win today as much as she values the lessons learned by the team and her staff in today's loss. As fans, we put a high value on winning every game. But there is much more going on than probably any of us realize.
I can't wait to see what the Wizard of Palo Alto has in store for this team tomorrow.
People you trust still screw up. C'mon now, people, the substitution patterns were atrocious today, starting with Haley getting the minutes she is getting. ANY OTHER player on the roster, playing that poorly, is sitting next to the coaches. Yet Haley is given all kinds of rope to play through her (many) mistakes. And Demetre the whole 2H? Really?
It's a mess out there, and the FT shooting is beyond bad. Truly. [And Brink is great; but honestly, how many point blank bunnies did she miss today? I can think of 5 off the top of my head. The entire team is discombobulated right now. [I knew that we would miss Kiana, but it really shouldn't be like this. There is a ton of talent on that roster still].
RE: WBB: Stanford 54 South Florida 57 -

We're all getting frustrated with the current situation of this team, and for good reasons, regarding the lack of confident PG court leadership due to the graduation of Kiana WILLIAMS, which is then exacerbated by the sudden mysterious underperforming of their best player Haley JONES (did not score in 31 minutes vs USF) and weird on-court player combination decisions by Tara (PRECHTEL and BELIBI hardly playing in the USF game while Stanford is completely being outrebounded by a much smaller opponent).
For me, I have decided to significantly lower my expectations for this team and hope that they can iron out their individual and collective kinks and progress well as the season continues to unfold. Never mind if Stanford has 6 former HS McD AAs in its team vs. ZERO from its opponent. And never mind if Stanford has 2 Top 3 and 8 Top 25 overall national recruits in its line-up vs. ZERO from its opponent. Those laurels apparently don't matter at this point.
On a more enthusiastic note, I agree that DEMETRE should continue to be given some good playing time (in the 15+ minute range) as the offensive spark off the bench along with Hannah JUMP, because she really has the best combination of mid-range/3-point range offensive weapons for this team. Hopefully, her defense improves to Tara's liking as the season evolves.

My problem with the substitutions is that, unless you're the hulls, Cam, and some extent jones, if you foul, turn the ball over or take a bad shot you're coming out. And what's the point of putting someone in for 1 or2 minutes

Coaches need to put players in positions to be successful on the court. How is Fran going to be successful in 2 minutes? The players have to feel just as confused about the sporadic minutes so it’s a no wonder the team is very up and down individually aside from Brink. All this bullshit about tinkering with lineups and finding a point guard is just bullshit. EVERYONE knew the PG situation was the biggest question mark for the season. Why are the coaches just now trying to figure that out. Practice is the time to solidify rotations and get players comfortable in their roles. Not the games themselves especially playing a gauntlet schedule. I would give our coaches a C as a grade so far this year. Not impressive. This team will get better and may still contend for a Final 4, but these early season struggles could have been avoided.
I will also say coaches can and should be criticized. This is a fan board and I feel an appropriate place to openly share our feeling, critiques, and support for anything Stanford athletics.

RE: WBB: Stanford 54 South Florida 57 -

My theory about odd player substitutions is that they are usually about a match-up on defense that I don't understand. I presume when someone starts and is taken out quickly it is because Tara saw that the particular player could not defend their assignment. Now, not saying it makes sense in this case, but in years past that is often what it meant. "Lets see if Fran can guard so-and-so" and since the tape can only show you so much, you may need to experiment a little to see. And it may become clear quickly if it doesn't work.
South Florida had the one tall player but not a second. Therefore, perhaps Tara wanted less size and more quickness on defense. It did not seem to work out that well.

Great, I'm glad you posted because you clearly know more than the Hall of Fame coach. Also, my guess is that Tara has told the players there will be some unusual substitutions in order to prepare them. I'd like a different pattern, but I've never coached high level wbb. I totally trust Tara (yes she can make mistakes as we all do but she knows way more than I re how to prepare her team). And, btw, I trust her plan re messing with the lineup alot more than Haase.

Unless you (old spanish trail ) are Coach Vanderveer in disguise on this message board, stop acting like I'm insulting you personally! I have no qualms about dishing out my two cents on the coaching and this is a place to rightly do so. I trust Tara and I absolutely think the team will figure it out at some point. But watching these early season games, it sure seems these early season loses could have been avoided. The team has not been fun to watch and the same issues continue to plague us. We returned way too much talent and experience to look so discombobulated on the court and no the players were not told there would be unusual substitutions.

I only looked at stats, did not see the game, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Gotta agree with those who say the subbing is not helping the team. Having a deep roster doesn't mean Belibi plays well and decent minutes one game then two minutes the next, for example. Players need a little (or a lot) more consistent minutes, not this 18 minutes one game, barely play the next, not for players who have experience and even if they make an early mistake, can correct that if not yanked. Not good for Iriafen to have two games in a row where she plays a minute and pulled. That will not help her grow her game or confidence. Rebounding was poor, so maybe give Iriafen more of a shot? If Jones is ill or dinged up or has some other issue that if affecting her play, cut her minutes more or let her sit and recuperate. She is vital. Let her heal if that needs to happen. I am glad Demetre got some playing time. She has done well when given the chance, even if she did make a late mistake that hurt.
Heck I don't want to try to figure out this game, except to say that this scheduling for the week is a killer. Do we lose to USF like this if not 9 AM game on the east coast in the middle of three top 25 games in three games where the opponents do not have three in three? Kinda think not. It is not growth if you play games like this where the rotation is a mess, the players are tired, and they know they have to do it all again tomorrow. We have two brutal east coast trips this year. One is enough, thanks. We are not going to beat So Car without playing a whole lot better, and even a whole lot better may not do it.
Looking at a few factors like the odd rotation choices of the coaches, the FT shooting woes, all the stuff we talk about here, I think the team, coaches and players alike, are still a little hangover from last season, if that makes sense. Nobody seems mentally sharp right now. Poor FT shooting is mental. I think missing Williams is important but not because Lacie is doing a poor job. She is doing ok. The problem is more that we are missing Williams' leadership and scoring. We are not a good offensive team, or not nearly as good as we could be, because the line-up choices have a hitch to them. Can't get scoring from the perimeter with the experienced players enough to offset the loss of Williams.
Lacie is not a big scorer, has not been and will not be. That is ok, if she fills in well at the point. As we have noted previously, we can't play her and Wilson too much together because we basically have no guard scoring. Add in that Lexie has never been that efficient as a scorer (she is shooting in the lowish 30's this season and did last year too) or consistent, and you have trouble. I love the Hulls. They play smart and hustle like mad. However, I don't think they have another gear. They are already maxed out in effort and intensity. They are what they are. Our guards and wings if they are mostly Lacie, Lexie, and Anna Wilson, are great at "the little things" but not great enough at one big thing- scoring, which means consistency and efficiency. Last year, we had Williams shooting threes and scoring 14+ a game, which allowed the other guards as a group to do other things like be defensive stoppers. We lost that 14 points and nobody is picking up the slack from the perimeter. Even with all the offensive issues, defense has not been super great thus far either.
I think the team has so far not really been able to gel, and the schedule is hurting rather than helping them. I don't buy that this prepares them for the P-12 tournament. By then everything will be different. Rotation will be much more locked in, roles defined, etc. Now it just wears them out. The losses will stick. Nobody is going to give them a break and say well they were playing such a tough schedule. They will seed the team with the 12-0 or 11-2 non-conference record ahead of Stanford if we lose more, which given we play MD, at So Car, and at TN, we may well. Seeding does matter. Worse seed = harder NCAA opponents = more chance to lose and also more wear and tear even if you do advance.
This may all turn around. It is still early. Or this could be a sort of lost year, where the team just doesn't quite have it, especially faced with a brutal non-conference load and a very tough conference. The FTs keep getting to me as do the slow starts. They are a sign. I have never seen a Stanford team shoot FTs like that, certainly not for three games in a row. Something is off mentally. Shoot FTs and this game was a W. To be blunt, I don't think a team that plays a lot with the line-ups we've been using is all that great. Would surely help a lot if Jones gets back to herself, but even still, guard scoring needs to improve a lot. When a team shuts ya down you need your guards to make things happen.
All that said, I intend to enjoy the season. I want to see how they regroup for tomorrow and for the rest of the non-conference games. I want to see how the frosh develop. I want to see how the team improves and hopefully makes everything I wrote above irrelevant, if not downright silly (please, make me look silly!). I want to see the coaches figure out how to get all the young talent into games better than is happening now so in a couple of months they are confident and contributing more. I want to see Van Gytenbeek play. She played more last year even with Williams taking so many minutes. What's up with her????? I want to see what Harriel can do. She hasn't played a lick yet. I am enjoying Brink playing well but we can't put so much on her as we have the last two games. I want to see a healthy and happy Haley Jones back and hitting those crazy spinning shots. I want to see players like Belibi, who have played mostly well, in a more settled rotation.
Ah, I give up. I don't understand this season. I am lost, like maybe the team is a little bit.

Tara has been doing that for literally decades for all players I've always thought (and continue to think) that was good. If the foul is because you're being outplayed, or tired, or frustrated, take some time and sit. You are going to know why you are being taken out.
Cam's first foul in the 2Q didn't get her out.
Cam's 2nd foul in the 3Q got her out at the next stoppage.
Hayley's first foul in the 3Q got her out at the next stoppage.
Lexie's first foul in the 3Q got her out immediately. Only foul of the game.
Cam's 3rd foul early in the 4Q didn't get her out.
Hayley's 2nd foul in the 4Q got her out immediately.
Cam's 4th foul with 27 seconds left in the game didn't get her out.
Lacie had no fouls.

I haven't been able to stream any games, so the last one I saw was Texas, where Jones was our leading scorer. After that, she had her triple double against Portland. Then she sat out in Spokane while seemingly looking healthy. So I wonder if she has a case of the "yips" - what Simone Biles had. In basketball, that's not fatal, so you can try to shoot your way out of it. That might explain why Tara is leaving her in when under ordinary circumstances she should be pulled. And why Tara is almost asserting that she's doing fine, when she clearly isn't. And it might explain the vague allusion in the ESPN power rankings to Brewer's essay and Jones sitting out the Gonzaga game. Or maybe a relative is sick. Or something else along those lines. But it seems like something that happened recently.
I will say that not just this year, but in general, I think Tara is a bit too quick to pull players after a single mistake, and I think she sometimes cares overly much about defensive assignments/matchups vs. offensive firepower / getting an offensive groove going. But then again, she has three championships and I have none. That said, I do think anything less than 5-8 minutes a game for a player is essentially useful. No time to get in a groove or build confidence.
And one thing is certain: we have far more talent on the court than either Indiana or USF had, so there's clearly some sort of miasma that's set in. And I actually think it might be recent, because honestly, the team looked joyous and like they were ready to pick up where they left off in their exhibition and against Morgan State. Ever since the Texas game, it sounds like we have been tight, nervous, and out of sync.
Maybe everyone should read the Inner Game of Tennis. The team needs to find its Self 2. Ideally by noon tomorrow.

If someone is going to complain about the Stanford coaches or players on a Stanford board, that someone should have a thick enough skin to not complain about being picked on when someone else steps up to defend that maligned player or coach.
This is a Stanford fan board, and you might just find some here that will support the players and coaches.

If that 25 footer doesn't go in for South Florida, we win the game and the mood on the board is way different. Looks like I'm definitely an outlier when it comes to confidence about this team. I would most certainly have preferred to win today, but all in all I'm pretty happy with where we are because a few things have happened that I personally think we need in place to be great:
1) Cam has to be a focal point of the offense and step into the role of being a legitimate threat all the time (i.e. no more games with 4 shots). This is a big step for her, it's happening, and I give her and the coaching staff credit for evolving. The other players have to adjust around that. It may mean less/no playing time for the other bigs. But it's necessary for the team to be great. Cam also has to stay on the court. Looks like she's learning how.
2) Lacie needs to be the point guard (yes, this is my opinion and others feel differently I know). I won't elaborate any more as to why because I already have and don't want to sound like a broken record. For me, the decision isn't even close.
3) We need to have Jump and others (today Demetre) hit threes. I think this is beginning to happen. We know Prechtel and Wilson can and will deliver from deep. I also think we'll get 3's from Cam and the Hulls, and maybe even Haley too as the season progresses. With Cam being more of a threat down low and being a good passer, we'll get more open threes (a la her passes to Demetre and Lacie today). That is so tough to guard. Either double her and we get a 3 or don't and see if you can stop her with one defender.
Some of the issues we've seen so far will simply go away on their own over time. They will start making their free throws at a reasonable %. It may not be 75%, but it will be more than 60%. Haley and Lexie will also return to their former selves (actually I'm kinda worried about Haley). When these things start to happen, we will be beating teams like Texas and USF by double digits. (South Carolina is another level above though. Gonna be tough to take them down, especially at their place).
My biggest question is can the players hang together through all this churning and find their on-court chemistry? This is not easy, for coaches or for players. But I do think Tara excels in this area and the players do trust her. They also benefit from knowing what it takes to be a champion. Not sure there's a better coach out there to handle such a large roster.
Stay tuned for a fun year. Really psyched to see what tomorrow will bring.

By the way, this year's points of emphasis (as called out in the rule book)
- Enforcing the Rules as Written
- Faking Fouls
- Traveling
- Legal Guarding Position
- Post Play
- Contact On and By the Ball Handler/Dribbler

Apparently that last bullet point was suspended for today’s game. The USF coach spent so much time on the court I figured it was likely his name would show up in the Box Score “minutes played” column…
