RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - chimera - 11-27-2021

That was much, much better in all respects, though with the big caveat that MD under Frese has been and still is a terrible defensive team and are now missing three key players.  This was a nice blowout win for sure, sort of a cleanser after yesterday, but I'm not sure we beat a top team today, not when NC State hammered them by even more a couple of days ago.

Best things to me were Jump and the threes falling well, FT percentage finally looking reasonable, Jones looking much more herself, and everyone available getting some minutes.  I did not see the game, only saw stats so can't say much beyond that.  Amazing what playing a poor defensive team can do for offensive confidence.

I take it the subs had some issues given the +/- stats and that folks here thought Van Gytenbeek and Hamilton did not do that great.  Unfortunate, since at some point we are going to need subs to take over the pg spot.

As to ranking, I agree it doesn't matter much.  I do fear that the Texas loss and now the USF loss, both games I really feel we should have won, will be a millstone on their necks when seeding time comes.

Overall, hey I am really happy they won big and got a cruise game where the bench could get some run.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - Baez87 - 11-27-2021

Nothing like a substantial win to make a week in the Bahamas feel like a grand holiday! The wind and the mostly-cloudy skies this week had amplified the disappointment of the Southern Florida loss. But today’s win has provided the winning medicine to heal all wounds, helping yesterday’s loss fade into the Atlantic sunset (full disclosure, no sun, no sunset).
A few take-aways from today’s game…
MD’s plays with attitude, and their most egregious play occurs after the whistle. The two technical fouls on MD were not continuation-of-the play or over-aggressive physical play. They were mean-spirited, over-the-top frustration technicals — a hack to the head and a forearm to the back of a downed player. Brenda Frese did nothing to discourage this behavior.

Still, the positives for Stanford outweighed negatives for MD.
Most of the positives can be read via the box score or the through other contributions to the thread, but the value of racking up such a positive score early gave Tara the opportunity to give the second string a chance to play. Jana got substantial minutes, and in spite of her miscues, she did get valuable court time. She will come along, she just needs playing time. Jordan, too.
Time to celebrate beating a #4 and a #2 ranked teams. MD may have been missing some key players (and almost fouled themselves into five on four in this game), but Stanford needed a smoothly played offensive game to get back in their stride, which they did!
Go team! December contains some real challenges and this week may have provided the confidence and fluidity to help make the coming season a successful.

As much as winning against current #2 Maryland and #4 Indiana provides a much-needed boost to the players' morale, I think that the Texas loss and the USF loss are what really catches their attention and provides a great teaching tool for Tara, whose focus is really more about teaching than winning as she has always professed.

Were the baseline doors closed today? I noticed in yesterday's game that two of them were open when Stanford was in the second half. I would think the lighting/open doors would have greatly affected the shooters, especially from range. Even with UM's lazy defense, it was still nice to see those shots go in today.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - Card10Fan - 11-27-2021

I've had a chance to watch most of the predicted top teams in the Pac12 this season. Despite our struggles, at this point we still look like the best team in the conference with Arizona being our top challenger.
UCLA has two loses to mid major programs
Oregon State on track to go 0-2 in their Thanksgiving tourney
Washington State loses by 32 to NC State today
Oregon has 2 loses but several key players out with injury
Arizona State is 3-4

The box score shows only one technical (Owusu).
The other foul that was apparently left at a personal foul was after the play was over.  I thought it was a delay of game technical foul where a MD player interfered (to the head) with a Stanford player collecting the ball after the end of the play.
AH...  Why  it would have looked like a technical foul:  Rule 4.9.1.f on Delay provides for a first-time warning (2nd results in a technical foul)

ND vs Oregon State.  Oregon State was down 22 in the last minute of the 3rd Quarter.
At the end of the game, they were down 2 with 18 seconds left.  They had 2 shots and then 2 FT (with a potential rebound), but they wound up short.

Maya Dodson did well in the post-game interview.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - 81alum - 11-27-2021

I was unable to watch the game live due to another event, but recorded it and just finished watching.

1) Yes, Maryland was not its usual self.  The way the refs were calling the game compounded their problems--since they could not afford foul trouble but got it.  So while this was a good win, if we play Maryland in March we can expect an entirely different team.

2) At this point, who cares about the quality of the competition?  Our team needed a big psychological boost, and it was wonderful to see them smiling, laughing, having fun out there on the court.  I haven't seen that for too long.

3) This team was in a bad way when both Lexie and Jones were in offensive slumps.  Both of them broke out of those slumps.  A giant boost to their confidence.

4) Hannah Jump shows us how pretty our offense can be when we have a reliable three point threat.  Not only should we marvel at her amazing accomplishment of going 7/14, but that threat opens up the opposing defense for everyone else.  Hitting enough threes is probably more important than stellar point guard play when it comes to facilitating the offense, although it would be nice to have both.

5) Nice to see free throw shooting back to respectable.

6) Nice to see a lot of people play, but only 5 had double digit minutes.  I hope Prechtel is OK.  The reports of Brink throwing up before the game worry me.  Interesting to get news from an east coast paper that Jones tweaked her ankle before Gonzaga.  Explains quite a lot.

Now home and a couple of games to get our lineup figured out and our players through finals.  A nice way to enter into a long break.

As for rankings, Massey hasn't been updated with today's games, but we started the day at 9 and Maryland started at 7.

Apparently Brink was sick and so was Prechtel. But as for Jones and an ankle sprain from Gonzaga, nope. She didn't play at all in the Gonzaga game. Maybe a sprain in the Portland game, which kept her out of the Gonzaga game.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - BillBradley - 11-28-2021

Great game Card! Random thoughts:

- If Brink was sick, why would she be sitting next to the players and the coaches? Seems awfully strange that Prechtel was at the end of the bench staying away from everyone, but Cam was throwing up and then mixing in with everyone. Sick but not contagious = food poisoning? Whatevs.

- Haley and Lexie return to form!
- Seems like 4 starters are pretty much locked. Cam, Haley, Lexi, Lacie. I'm really hoping Jump sticks as the 5th starter. Many noticed that the ball was moving faster and generally we played faster. Hannah may have a lot to do with that. Anna holds it and is more methodical. Hannah either passes it or shoots it and makes that decision quickly. I love that lineup and hope she sticks with it.
- Playing fast is so much fun when it works. There were times when Hannah was sprinting to the corner, Lacie had the outlet and was out in front and Cam, Lexi, and Haley were all beating their opponent down the court. We got a great shot in transition every time. That group can fly. And Belibi and Anna can run the court great too!
- Most of the bench didn't look very good today, with the exception of Bosogna who helped herself a lot. This group of frosh could be really good in a few years. Demetre is an awesome shooter. Kiki has great talent, but has to finish those layups! Jana just isn't there yet. She's a step slow, made some rough passes, and got blown by on defense too. She can still get there, but IMO there's a pretty big gap she needs to close to be a factor this year. She needs to keep at it so she can be a factor next year and after. I continue to root for her as I'm a big fan of point guards who can also shoot.
- The +/- is really telling. Lexi(+32), Lacie & Haley(+27) and Hannah(+26) followed by Cam at +19 in 9 minutes! Belibi was in with the bench when we went backwards, so maybe that explains why she was only +3 in a blowout game. Then there's the bench - all negative except Kiki who played a bunch with the starters. That really shows the gap between the top players and the bench. There are real implications if Tara just subs in players "to get them experience". I think she's doing a good job finding minutes for some of them (i.e. Demetre and Kiki against the Gonzaga zone) where they can be successful. And it's not a big deal where the games won't be at risk, like the next two games, so the bench should get some great time. But in tight games, I don't think it should be a surprise that a lot of these underclassmen aren't seeing time.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - 81alum - 11-28-2021

The AP article by Feinberg has some interesting quotes:

Quote:After dealing with a sprained left ankle for the past week, Haley Jones seemed to be back to her usual self....“She has some genes,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “For her to be moving the way she was, I didn't think it would happen. I was hoping she might be able to play in this game. Haley did a lot of rehab and she looked great out there.”

Quote:“This has been a real grind of a week,” VanDerveer said. “Playing last Sunday at Gonzaga, 19 hours to get down here, play such great competition, I'm really proud of our team. Thought today I challenged our team to play their best basketball. We rebounded.

[*]
Quote:Hannah Jump, a last-minute addition to the starting lineup because Cameron Brink was sick just before the game, had 21 points, hitting seven 3-pointers.  “Hannah had a breakout game,” VanDerveer said.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Maryland, 12noon Saturday - TheFarm07 - 11-28-2021

The South Florida will still sting as it was imminently winnable and Maryland was not at full strength, so there is somewhat of an asterisk besides it. But having not seen today's game and not having bought the streaming option, so I only watched the other two games (and not all of them) using the method where you refresh the tiny window every 90 seconds, it seems that though we smoothed out some things in the last game today, we could definitely use these next two weeks to hopefully get everyone back to fully healthy and work on some issues still plaguing us.

Fortunately, we have a softer spot in our schedule when we emerge from our finals hiatus against Pacific and Davis. Hopefully those two games will let us shake off any cobwebs off from the long break, give the bench more playing time and put into action any adjustments we've learned over the first 7 games of the season before our very tough road trip to Tennessee and South Carolina. With Carolina's win against UConn earlier, Staley's crew is definitely the early season standard that everyone else is holding themselves up to; that contest will show us how far we are from being successfully defending our crown.

AH...  Why  it would have looked like a technical foul:  Rule 4.9.1.f on Delay provides for a first-time warning (2nd results in a technical foul)

When I watched the replay, I see that Stanford was also warned for delay.  At 5:44 in the 2Q, we made a basket.  As the ball came down Owusu and Belibi had their hands up for it.  The ball bounced up in the air.  At the time, I thought Uwusu had done that, but I see now that the ref warned Stanford for Delay.

---
Right after that, at 5:31 2Q, Uwusu lowers her head and drives her shoulder (like a bull) right into Lexie.   Lexie goes flying backward at least 15 feet.  I simply can't understand how that wasn't called.
At 5:16 Uwusu gets called for her 2nd as she reaches around our person with the ball.

At 2:56 is when Uwusu drove into Lexie.  As they fall, their legs get tangled up and both wind up on the floor.  Uwusu slides into the feet of Jones, who then offers a hand up to Uwusu. It is ignored.  Uwusu gets her feet under her, in a deep squatting position.  Lexie is in a sitting position with Cam giving her a hand.  Uwusu does a two-handed shove of Lexie in her back.  Two MD players get to her quickly and walk her to the bench.

--------
More FloHoops issues:  On Saturday evening, they posted a 7:10:42 replay of Saturday's game.  However, nothing plays after very late in Stanford's 3rd quarter.  There were earlier glitches where I had to skip forward over stuck spots.  But I tried several a number of spots after 1:19 into the video but get nothing.  I had thought the issues in the replay videos of the earlier games were aberrations, but it appears to be too frequent.

Answer: yes, the big Conference Center doors were closed for the MD game. The day before those big doors were open wide. My friend, Steve, who was also at the game mentioned to me that he thought the extremes of light behind the basket might have effected our shooting. We were shooting very poorly in warm-ups as well. Whether the light was the cause or that we were just unfocused having played a tough game the day before, is pure conjecture, although quite plausible.

Thanks! I was taken back to my kid's AAU days playing in hotels and convention centers and stuff like that would drive me nuts as a spectator.

So, they were missing two starters(I presume) who would have had an impact.  They were also forced to play without as much bench to provide rest.

This has been pointed out in other posts but the Maryland team we beat was the same Maryland team that beat current #5 Baylor.  Benzan and Masonius didn't play in the Baylor game.  And Diamond Miller did play but only 11 minutes and she was 1 for 6 from the field.  We could have easily lost to the Maryland team we played as they are capable of beating a top 5 team with the lineup they had on the floor.  But instead we blew them out, so we should take that as some sign of the progress and development of this team.  Yes turnovers, free throw shooting and making layups all have to improve.  But, this team is moving in the right direction and has a very high upside.
