McCaffrey 'bowl opting' was the skillshot for Stanford football
And the nail in the coffin was the moment the portal became a thing.
College football is nothing but glorified minor league football. For Stanford It's too difficult to get in and too easy to get out. We could have the greatest coaches in the universe and it wouldn't make a bit of difference
Having better coaches would ABSOLUTELY make a difference. Even if the W-L column wouldn't change (which it still would), there's a massive difference between actually being competitive in every game and getting completely bullied off the field with the team clearly quitting on the coaches.
Hmmm, willing to suggest which coaches should be changed out?
Maybe we can get
them to enter the portal...

I went to one of those games. Once. First play was a pass to the flat. WR does a one step juke, sprints hard for the sidelines. QB throws the ball into the ground five yards in front of the receiver on a
very short throw. Easier to watch Paly vs. Los Gatos...

Looks like a Pac-12 problem vs. a Stanford problem. And certainly a Colorado problem...

Do you think Stanford will beat USC next season?
I realize we will know more when the respective teams actually start to play games, but what would you say are the chances of a Stanford W are, based on just what you know now?
I'd slot that at around 10-15%.
Stanford has "freefall" vibe; SC has "rising" vibe.
Not good.

Hey Mick we used to see that play all the time except it was Mike Cordova throwing it. He even inspired the band to do a skit with a musician tosses the ball into the turf. Band was actually funny back then. And it had Michaelson for an announcer.
There are some very good programs in the North Bay. Marin Catholic, San Marin, Cardinal Newman.

Built like Jim Plunkett. Big strong dude. Threw a great sinker ball. If they allowed one hop throws, he would have been a great one. Then there was the skinny sleepy looking Guy. Cordova looked the part. Benjamin only threw a beautiful ball. Was obvious to everyone but the only one that mattered that Benjamin was the much better QB.

USC always has a “rising” vibe, followed by an “overrated” vibe once they take the field. Maybe this time it will be different, but let’s see them play some games before we announce the newest guy the savior.
That being said, I’m not disputing your characterization of Stanford. We are in for a tough year; no amount of wishcastung will produce us a experienced and deep defensive line.

I get that it must be tough for longtime Shaw defenders to engage in discussion when the house is falling down and it's obvious who is to blame.

Teejers, we get it. Shaw sucks. Always has. The program is in the toilet. You’ve said that approximately 1,000 times now.
He is the most successful Stanford coach of your lifetime, but that was based on good fortune. And it is actually all attributable to Harbaugh. Even when they won, he sucked. If he had been a good coach, Stanford would have won multiple NCs. Cause of course, that is where Stanford has been historically.
My “defense” of Shaw is predicated on what I perceive (and perceived) to be the lack of respect for what he achieved. Hell, I remember people screaming he should be fired in early ‘14. And my belief, which continues to this day, that he had the right formula (which actually started with JH) with his power and complimentary football blue print. I wish he’d get back to recruiting to it.
Things look bleak today. I grant you that. And if they have another year like ‘21 in ‘22, he should be on the hot seat.
And FTR as they say, I said many times during the good times that it wouldn’t last. Because there was nothing in the 50 years prior that gave reason to believe that Stanford would be a perennial football power.
Personally, I hope they begin turning it around next year. But not sure that’s gonna happen. So, maybe soon you will get your wish.

Very interesting research/data Papa John. Wow, this does tell an insightful story. Of course one wonders how it looks as a percentage of total stars (schools with few stars have fewer to lose) and how it looks at other schools/conferences so we could see where players are transferring to. But with this data it does make me concerned for the Pac-12 in general.

Cordova reportedly had a lot of EUTM.
Benjamin was a bit of a sulker.
Also, Cordova had days in practice where he looked and played just like Plunkett. Unfortunately he could never translate this into consistency on game day.

The defense will struggle this fall. That's pretty much a given.
Just hoping that with McKee throwing to a talented, experienced receiver corps and E.J. and Filkins running behind what will hopefully be an improved OL, we will be able to score enough points to allow us to win at least some games.
