Re JVG, could this be NIL sticking its nose in the tent? Maybe coaches can’t contact you until you are in the portal, but what about NIL agents?
See the claims in the MBB national champion NCAA Level 1 cases defense that they paid the player’s family but were not boosters of the school.
To be clear, I am not saying that JVG did anything wrong. I am saying that people who provide NIL may claim that they can contact players not in the portal.

Many Stanford WBB players have NIL deals including one for the whole team.

I hope all is well with her and her family. It could just be a basketball decision, but given that she was in line for a much bigger role next season, would seem a bit of an odd decision, doubly so since she is a soph and not graduating so no degree in hand. I guess we shall see where she ends up. That may tell something about why she chose to transfer. Beyond that I won't speculate.

Anything is possible without knowing JVG's reason yet or if she definitely will transfer. I figure two years of a full athletic Stanford scholarship is worth about $180,000. Is she worth that much for NIL sponsorship at another school? I know this NIL stuff is getting ridiculous but if it can sway a kid to leave Stanford without a degree, this world has gone crazy.
What about the 50 year career following college that won't be playing basketball professionally?

I’m sure very sure it has nothing to do with NIL
Beyond that hope she is ok

wow, certainly a surprise. you'd think a point guard would kill to play for a program with the top front court in the country. it's assist city! not that that helped win kiki rice.
lili thompson transferred out, but there was known strife beforehand. something is different here. could it reflect players adjusting as kate paye gets closer to taking over?
or, being cautiously optimistic, i suppose there is there is some chance that our 2 top point guards for next year leaving implies that they feel over-recruited, that harriel and the incoming lepolo and nivar are even better than we thought. or that some top point guard is close to transferring in.

This is a real head scratcher because Van Gytenbeek could have been a starter for the next two years. I doubt it was competition from Harriel or the incoming freshmen because they are such unknowns. I hope you are right about transfer(s).

So let's see. Now that JVG in the portal, it's no longer speculation to say Stanford WBB could lose a player to portal, for whatever reason.
But guessing on the reason is frowned upon as speculation.
Separately, if Bob is the insider with all the knowledge, and he implies it could be a family-related thing, is it okay to assume that's what is driving this? Or is that unjustified speculation, too?
Will close with this general question/observation: if you had a child at Stanford University who played basketball, and you were sick - let's even say terminally - would you want your child to leave Stanford to be closer to you for however long you had left? It's a morbid question - but really a rhetorical one. It's hard for me to see how this is not either a basketball decision or an "I don't like Stanford that much" decision (and given how much time athletes spend on their sport in D1 athletics, that flows back toward a basketball decision).
It happens . . . even within our beloved program.
I hope all is well with Jana and her family and that she enjoys her experience at her next college destination. Best of luck.

Becky Bonner is the last player I can recall leaving without a degree. IIRC, Melody Peterson got kicked off the team but Tara honored her scholarship and she ended up playing for Nebraska later.
This makes me so sad.

More recently Rooks to Harvard then Michigan State as a grad
Peterson graduated in three years

Entirely different situation than any of others, but Jamie Carey (Pac-10 freshman of the year in 2000) transferred to Texas after Stanford doctors declined to clear her to play because of concussions. Once at Texas, played for two seasons where was all Big-12 both years.

Call me not surprised. I will miss watching JVG. I thought she warranted more playing time this year with all our PG issues to start the season. She has the talent to be a starter at many top programs. Wish her the best and wouldn't be surprised if she ended up back in Colorado. We shall see.

I'm very sad to see JVG go. Lili Thompson stayed a year off the team so she could graduate. Rooks went to Harvard which is only a small step down from Stanford academically. Carrington and Dodson and Snizek and Harrison and Moschkau all grad transferred, I think.
So leaving after your sophomore year is something new, indeed. Hopefully she goes to an Ivy like Rooks.

Unless someone knows better, it could be a transfer because of academic reasons or perhaps romantic reasons. Anyone know what percent of incoming freshmen stick it out to graduation at Stanford?
Where I went to college decades ago, the first thing they told us was that many would not graduate. It was an intended shock.

According to
https://www.scholarships.com/colleges/stanford-university/graduation-rates/ the graduation rate is 95.2% within 6 years of starting. I think it is not 100% simply because some people chose other paths, like transferring. It used to be that a significant (but still not large) number of students actually did "flunk out". The system has been changed such that that no longer applies, but if you are not doing well it will cost you lots of money (and time) to finally get a degree.
