So Cal picks up SG Kemery MARTIN and PF/C Peanut Tuitele. These two are really good gets from the transfer portal. They did lose Deliyah DANIELS, but she didn't look comfortable with the way she was being used by Charmin SMITH and company.

I apologize if this has been asked/answered already: once a player is in the portal, is there a protocol as to who makes the first contact (i.e. the player or the school)?
And in theory, can't a player transfer academically without entering the portal? (IIRC we had a WVB grad transfer do that last year, but what about an undergrad?).
Obviously academic quals are the key factor, but it seems like direct contact is prohibited until the player enters the portal, and I was just wondering how the next steps would work at Stanford.

I think if you’re in the portal you pass through it and you wind up in Egypt except it isn’t Egypt it’s another planet. Cosmic.

I don’t know anything for sure, but here are my two cents worth:
In February, I was watching a game on TV in which Oregon State led Arizona State by two points in the final minutes. Rueck was unhappy with a call and drew two technical fouls in secession. In making the game about himself, his team ended up losing that game by double digits. Until that game, I had a favorable impression of Rueck, who had had somewhat of a Fairy Tail tenure at OS, fielding a team out of walk-ones and leading OS to be a contender in a short span of time.
My impression of him completely changed that day as I watched his melt-down. He did not lead by example. The contest appeared to be Rueck, the little man, versus the world. That day, I lost respect for him as a coach. I wondered if his players did, too. I also wondered if his actions that day were not simply a part of a larger character flaw for Rueck. I wonder what other things he may have done during the season that alienated his team, because something seems to be unglued in Ore State!!
Rueck Erupts!

Not to mention in the last two recruiting cycles, we have LOST 3 elite recruits to Rueck.
Talia Von Oehlohffen (visited Stanford, we were a finalist)
Greta Kampschroeder (visited Stanford, we were a finalist), now she's in the portal
Timea Gardiner (visited Stanford, will be a freshman this coming year at OSU)
It's hard to figure out recruits sometimes. We are a better program with a better coach and clearly better academic school. Von Oehloffen is the one recruit I really wanted that was bummed we didn't get. She would help us immensly. Something is clearly off at Oregon State. They are a hot mess but they've still won recruiting battles against for some reason unknown to me.

Lost is a strong wording giving we almost never know if the player was admissible on the end. Plus we filled our four openings for those who are Frosh now. And filled all for the incoming class. Unless they knew no Brown for this coming season
Always hard to tell with Stanford.
That said I have no idea with these three
Well unless Kampschoerder is about to commit to Stanford :)

Thanks BobK. Lost was probably not the right word there. Kampschroeder would be a surprise! I have no info on admission for those three either so no need for further speculation from me. Back to transfers, if Stanford were looking for a guard in the portal, what would be a likely timeline? Does anyone remember when we heard about Hamilton?
RE: WBB transfer portal -

I looked it up. May 26 Stanford announced Hamliton
RE: WBB transfer portal -
2006alum - 04-25-2022
At least back in my day, transfer admissions decisions were mailed May 15, which tracks Hamilton's decision timeline, although she was admitted as a grad transfer, right? So I guess the timeline might vary between undergraduate transfers and grad "transfers" who, for academic purposes, are not in fact transfers at all.

So, by my count, these are the Pac 12 WBB programs with players in the portal:
Colorado 5
Arizona 5
Oregon 5
ASU 3
Wash 3
USC 2
Cal 2
OSU 2
Stanford 2
Utah 2
WSU 1
Arizona and Oregon and Colorado are suffering devastating losses. But the numbers on the other teams don't necessarily show the full impact. At Oregon State and Utah key players are leaving, and we (Stanford) are losing all of our depth at point guard.
Utah, Cal, Oregon State, Colorado, and Oregon are each the beneficiaries of at least one transfer from within the Pac 12, which helps offset some of the losses.
I don't think that even pro teams have this much shuffling on average--at least not as much as the likes of Colorado and Arizona. It is positively ridiculous.
RE: WBB transfer portal - Softball Fan - 04-26-2022
This might have been posted earlier. May 1, this Sunday, is the last day for a player to enter the portal to be eligible to play 2022/2023 fall and winter sports. They can apply for a waiver after May 1 but not many will do that.

To expand on my earlier comment, if this level of transferring--or anything close to it--continues, it will change the game and in very negative ways.
1) It will dramatically reduce the incentive of coaching staffs to invest time in player development and shift the emphasis from "teachers of the game" to coaches who invest much more of their time in recruitment. Particularly recruitment of transfers.
2) Piecing together a dramatically new team each year will shift strategies away from intricate offenses that must be learned and practiced over more than one year to individual talent. Expect team assists and balanced scoring to go down and individual stars to be featured more.
Tara's strengths are 1 and 2--to the extent Stanford is immunized against the transfer virus these may continue to be a strength for us, but JVG suggests that even Stanford and Tara are not completely immune.
Graves and Oregon are, I think, a good indicator of how things are going. Not only did he lose 5 to the portal this year, but he has been having an increasing number of transfers out and in the last few years, and it shows in his results. Oregon has underperformed its talent since COVID cost them a good chance at a national championship, and I think their underperformance has been due to the constant churn on their team.
I think we can expect a lot more teams like Oregon, and a general decrease in the quality of college level WBB as the constant churn continues to ruin team chemistry and team strategy both. And that is all before the jealousies and narcissism of individual NIL deals begin to intrude on team sisterhoods. It is all very depressing for a fan to contemplate.

Oregon State actually lost 4 of their 5 supposedly top returnees to the transfer portal, JONES, BROWN, COROSDALE and KAMPSCHROEDER, making it the most devastated PAC 12 team. This is somehow negated by their two incoming 2022 Top 10 recruits (GARDINER and BEERS) and incoming transfer YEANEY from Arizona. So they still have a pretty impressive starting line-up consisting of VON OELHOFFEN at PG, YEANEY and MAROTTE at SG, GARDINER at PF and BEERS at C

Primarily about football but also touches on WBB:
FBS saw 16% of its athletes enter the portal, while women's basketball had 22% (1,134) enter during the 12-month period.
The NCAA analyzed data for all of the sports under its jurisdiction and found that only 30% (9,101) of Division I athletes who entered the portal across all sports transferred and received athletic aid at their new school...

I expect that there is a big transient in the system now as the rules change allowing a transfer without sitting a year takes effect. Athletes will see the positive and negative results others have and adjust accordingly. Right now, they probably figure "all good, no bad". After they see the bad, there will be fewer transfers. How many fewer remains to be seen. Lots of athletes will take a "That won't happen to me" approach, and then it will. I think in the main this transfer situation will turn out to be net negative both for the sport and for most athletes, though some will certainly benefit. Time will tell about how negative.

"All that glitters is not gold," this flight to greener pastures with players tending to assemble teams of their own making through the portal. The phenomenon might be called "The Lebron Effect" after the series of attempted team make-overs that Lebron James brought to the NBA in the last few years. His antics came to a screeching halt this year when his team didn’t even make the playoffs and he is fast becoming irrelevant. It remains to be seen what will happen in WBB, but we are in for a bumpy ride over the next few seasons. Let’s hope the specialness of women's basketball prevails.
