RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -

The Stanford men's team is being carried by Michael Thorbjornsen after 36 holes today. The rest of the team is mostly mediocre and as a result Stanford sits in the middle of the pack on its home course with 2 rounds to left play on the weekend.
ASU -24, Colorado -20, Washington -14, Oregon -13, Stanford -9
Thorbjornsen & Vilips are the only players in the Top 20
T1. Thorbjornsen -11
T16. Vilips -3
T28. Ng E
T34. Brown +1
T47. Menon +4
69. Greyserman +12
I was out at the course this afternoon and conditions were pretty awesome with temps in the 70s & 80s and a gentle breeze. Our guys should have played better on their home course. Hopefully the can make up some ground tomorrow on moving day.
RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -
winflop - 04-29-2023
A great day for the Cardinal on moving day! Stanford shot the second lowest round of the day while the top two teams faltered, and now sits just two shots out of the lead. Solid play across the lineup on a day when it would seem that the pin positions were much tougher based on the scores. Tomorrow will be a mad scramble with five teams within five shots of the lead:
T1 Colorado -17
T1 Washington -17
T3 Stanford -15
T3 ASU -15
5 Oregon -12
Stanford is paired with Colorado & Washington tomorrow while ASU & Oregon will be out earlier
Thorbjornsen now has a two-shot lead for the individual title:
1. Thorbjornsen -13
T11. Vilips -5
T27. Menon E
T30. Ng +1
T34. Brown +2
T69. Greyserman +15

Other Men's Golf News
At the Mexico Championship in Nuevo Vallarta, Wu is only 3 strokes out of first going into the final round. Bramlett is tied for 17th, Rodgers tied for 30 and McNealy not having a great tournament makes the cut but now tied for 71. Bramlett seems to have recovered his game after all his injury problems, good to see.

The guys must have had a good night's sleep: more than half-way through the final round we've opened up a
10-shot lead on second-place Colorado, with ASU and Oregon 5 shots further back than that!! Wow! Thorbjornsen is leading the individual competition by 1 after 10 holes.
RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -
Spiny_Norman - 04-30-2023
A windy day at Stanford bothered every team except Stanford. The Cardinal shot the low round by far (the only round under par) and swept past everyone to win the championship by 13 (!) shots. Michael Thorbjornsen also won the individual medal. Stanford last won the P12 golf championship in 2019 when they went to win NCAAs too. Thorbjorsen's title was the first by a Cardinal since Maverick McNealy in 2015.
Vilips and Menon played the best of their Stanford careers. Vilips posted 3 rounds under par and a final round 70 to finish T6. Menon recovered from a 1st round 75 to shoot 69-66-67 and a top 10 finish.
We can hope that the team can maintain this momentum into the regionals to be played in 2 weeks. Stanford will learn its regional assignment on Wednesday at 10 am pacific when the field is announced on the Golf Channel.

What a great comeback over the weekend to win it going away! Hopefully a sign of things to come with regionals and nationals ahead

Hats off to our pros not named Woods. Wu finishes 3rd and Rodgers and Bramlett tie for 10th. 3 guys in the top 10, not sure that has happened before. Hopefully one of them will win one yet this year.

I'd say Brandon Wu is the most likely to win of the three, but maybe not this year. Rodgers putter fails him under pressure, Bramlett is coming back from serious back issues for at least the third time.
And don't rule out Mav although he's nursing a shoulder injury

I like our chances to advance to nationals (which didn't happen last year when Brown & I think Vilips were out with COVID).

Stanford actually advanced to the NCAAs in 2022 where they finished 18th and did not make the 54 hole cut.
Two years ago, Shimp and Brown were out. The team that played at regionals (which did not advance) included Ng, Menon, Vilips and Thorbjornsen who should all be on the team that plays at regionals this year. So everyone on the team will have 3 (or more) years of post-season experience.

Men's golf begins its national title quest on Monday at Bear's Best in Las Vegas. Bear's Best is an interesting concept in that it has replicas of 18 holes selected by Jack Nicklaus from his more than 250 course designs around the world.
Stanford's roster: Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown, Menon, and Ng. Greyserman is the alternate (he can be substituted in for any of the three rounds)
I expect Stanford to easily qualify for nationals, and for Thorbjornsen to contend for the individual title. I'm also looking for solid performances from Vilips & Brown in particular by keeping double bogeys off their scorecards.

I wonder whether we would have preferred to be seeded into the Morgan Hill Regionals? I have no idea how the courses compare or suit our guys games, but I had thought we might end up there rather than Las Vegas.

Pepperdine and Stanford are very close in the rankings. It might have made more sense distance-wise for Stanford to be assigned to Morgan Hill and Pepperdine to Las Vegas. Instead, the NCAA assigned Stanford to Vegas and Pepperdine to Morgan Hill. Go figure.
Weather in Vegas will be similar to what Stanford might experience if they advance to Scottsdale. 75 degrees at the start of the day on the way up to the mid 90s. Desert golf.

Guarantee you Coach Ray would rather have had his players and playing in Morgan Hill and sleeping in their own beds every night.

Very tight scoring nearing the end of the first round.
Stanford is in second at -20. Solar Satans on top at -26.
Virginia third at -19. 4th through 11th from -15 to -10, with none of them in the clubhouse.
RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -

Round 1 is in the books for Stanford. I hope that Michael Thorbjornsen has a strong back because he is carrying the team once again. He put up 10 birdies and a bogey for a 63 (-9). At least today, one of his teammates helped out. 5th man Ethan Ng had 8 birdies, an eagle and 2 bogeys for 64 (-8).
The rest of the squad also joined in the birdie fest but gave most or all of it back. Vilips finished at 71 (-1) which included a triple bogey on the 9th hole. Brown recovered from a struggling start by going 4 under on the back 9. He shot 70 (-2). Menon was the drop score at 73 (+1).
The course played incredibly easy today. With some golfers still on the course, over 2/3 of the field is under par. The field is a collective 154 under par on the par 5s.
Day 1 Team Results
1. ASU -26
2. Stanford -20
3. Virginia - 19
4. East Tennessee St -16
Below that, there are 7 teams within 2 shots of each other between -10 and -12.
Individual Results
2. Thorbjornsen -9
3. Eng -8
T33. Brown -2
T45. Vilips -1
T55. Menon +1

When you have two players in the top five I'd say that's a pretty damn good effort, in spite of what the others did. Tomorrow is moving day and while it was important to get off to a good start, tomorrow will be more important for them to at least hold their position. I'm looking for Vilips in particular to rebound
There are 8 teams either in the final two quallfying spots or within two shots of them. Should be some separation tomorrow but I expect that final spot will come down to the back nine on Wednesday.

Play has been delayed due to Thunderstorms. Stanford is now currently leading ASU by 4

The 2nd round today was interrupted for 3 hours by lightning. Stanford had a great round going before the delay and finished it off in fine form. In fact, the drop score today was 1st team AA and finalist for the Haskins Award Michael Thorbjorsen. He only shot 68 (-4).
Meanwhile, look at the rest of these scores:
Nate Menon 66 (-6)
Ethan Ng 66 (-6)
Barclay Brown 67 (-5)
Karl Vilips 67 (-5)
Stanford set a school record for lowest postseason team score yesterday with 268. They broke it today with 266. This moved them into the lead with 18 holes to play.
Day 2 Team Results (with a few players still on the course)
1. Stanford -42
2. ASU -38
3. Virginia -33
4. East Tennessee St -30
5. USF -28
Day 2 Individual Results (with a few players still on the course)
1. Ng -14
T2. Thorbjornsen -13
T15. Brown -7
T23. Vilips -6
T29. Menon -5
