You think he says that he is planning to stay until he wins a Natty(which will be hard, considering how good Stanford and OSU has gotten, and UCLA is on the rise along with the Arizona schools) for Oregon? That was the reason he stayed after all.

Also, how come the major 5*s of the country don't want to play at Stanford? I mean, going 10-2, going to the Rose Bowl, beating Oregon(#2 at the time), and nearly beating the current #1 team in the country is a very impressive feat. And don't get me started on academics.

the team Under Stanford Control has fallen from grace, so how come Stanford can't lure the major big time recruits?

dude did you just start following the team this season? Look at the freshman class...top 5. And there will be some excellent players in this smaller class. And for next year there are already plenty 4-5 star recruits that say Stanford is their top school or at least in their top 5. And Shaw can't offer every 5 star recruit. Most can't get into Stanford....

Plus, we may be a victim of our own success in a few areas.  If I am an up-and-coming offensive lineman, I look at the insanely talented youngsters on the Stanford roster and maybe wonder if I won't get some more playing time somewhere else.  All that aside, I fully expect us to get a few more prize recruits this year and hope to hit the ball running in 2014.  Now recruits know that Stanford is more than Harbaugh and Luck.

I can see us being solid on the OL for years. All we could use are skill positions like perhaps WR and on defense, preferably at LB and in the secondary. With Aziz and Henderson up front, Stanford is set.

This is not surprising in the least.  Cotton's Junior video is mucho impressive, and he probably had a great Senior season.  Combine this with the fact Stanford has produced Coby Fleener (3 star recruit) and Zach Ertz (high 4 star recruit), and Stanford's offer is going to add to the ranking of the recruit.  That's just what happens when the programs deemed to be the best talent evaluators offer especially off the radar recruits.

I honestly don't see a whole lot of difference on video highlights between Cotton and Hunter Henry, who has been a 4 star recruit for some time, and Stanford recruited as well.

Methinks Stanford will become the new Tight End U. Not to mention they make exemplary players at all positions: RB(Taylor), O-line(Decastro and Martin), WRs, LB, and QB? That will allure recruits for sure.

Gratuitous, unabashed rumor mongering - socalstanfan1 - 12-01-2012

Noticed a Rivals article that Tarean Folston, a 4-Star RB prospect from Fla. attended the Oregon-Stanford game.  Folston has played his recruiting cards pretty close to the vest, but for a while in the summer most recruiting websites had him pretty interested in Stanford.  Lately, they have downgraded the Stanford interest.

So, here's the rumor mongering:  is it possible that Folston chose to attend the Stanford-Oregon game in order to see two programs that he still has interest in?  Is this similar to a Kalambayi situation, where he gets a chance to see Stanford on another program's dime?  We have no RBs in this year's class so far (though after watching his highlight tape, it honestly wouldn't surprise me to see Sean Barton make the Gerhardt switch from LB to big, bruising RB, if that's what the coaches want), and only one RB last year (though admittedly a potentially great one in BSJ).  Folston would be a great pickup, if in fact he still has interest and is just waiting to see how the application turns out.

I also think we have an excellent shot at Jordan Cunningham, the 4-star Fla. Wide Receiver prospect.  Checking out a couple of Univ. of Miami chat boards, their fans seem resigned to the fact that he will end up here, after earlier thinking he was a UM lock.  Not sure if there is a Cunningham/Folston connection, but hell, I'm starting a rumor, so why not hint at it.

Re: Class of 2013 - stanforddad - 12-01-2012

Just how many slots does Stanford have open for this years class?

Re: Class of 2013 - yvonne - 12-01-2012

Roughly half of last year's class, according to the recruiting coordinator, so  around 11.

Re: Class of 2013 - socalstanfan1 - 12-01-2012

So we have 2 spots available (barring transfers or unexpected departures that would open up additional spots), and here is a list of the players who, according to most of the recruiting sites, are still actively considering us:

OL

Thomas Oser 3*
Delando Crooks 3*
Dave Bright 3* (and apparently a new offer; maybe an indication that the coaches don't think the others are coming? or just an indication that they are really, really high on Bright)
Austin Golson 4* (committed to FSU, but for a while at least it seems the coaches were still in touch and trying to convince him to take a trip to visit.

WR
Jordan Cunningham 4*
Devon Allen 4*

RB
Nobody, unless you buy into my Tarean Folston rumor, launched earlier in this thread

DL

Austin Hooper 3* DE/TE

DB

Johnny Johnson 4* CB
Elijah Mitchell  3* CB (not offered, but apparently very high on Stanford)

Have I missed anyone?

Things to consider: some of the current commits might not make it through admissions, or might have a last minute change of heart.  Or perhaps an unexpected departure (the rumors of Nottingham moving on, while I hope they are false, could make some sense given the emergence of Hogan and the expected arrival of Burns).  So maybe there will be room to take more than just two of these players.  And of course there could be some last minute poaching of someone who is not even mentioned here, especially if we make a good showing under the national spotlight of the Rose Bowl.

Re: Class of 2013 - StannyBoy - 12-02-2012

Bright was offered recently so I do wonder if that was because Oser or Crooks didn't get in. Time will tell.

I haven't heard anything on Golson so I don't think the coaches are still recruiting him. I don't think he ever visited or applied.

IMO we probably land Cunningham and Allen if they get in. Cunningham is also high on Miami I believe and Allen is also high on UCLA so I am glad we beat them twice.

I don't think the coaches have been recruiting any RBs since no news on Folston or Adam Taylor in a very long time. Not a big deal though. Some guy named Barry Sanders is currently redshirting.

From what I've heard Austin Hooper is a long shot to get in. Probably ends up at ND or Kal.

IMO we land JJ if he gets in. He's no lock to get admitted though. The coaches asked Mitchell to retake the SAT/ACT before they offered so he's no lock to get admitted. And they could be stalling on him to see if JJ gets in. I believe Xavier Woods also has an offer.

I'm also surprised we haven't offered the younger brother of Dallas Lloyd. He just won player of the year in Utah as a QB beating out Alabama commit Cooper Bateman who was interested in Stanford but Shaw went with you know who in this class. If Lloyd is that good and is going on a mission he'd be great to stash away for a few years from now.

ESPN offers comments on the top five pocket passers of the class: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:8703602

Says he's the kind of guy you can build your offense around (I assume with usual disclaimer "if he lives up to potential etc. etc. etc.")

And we have Kevin Hogan, a redshirt Freshman going to a Rose Bowl. I wouldn't be surprised if Burns decommits. Such a high level talent like him would want to go somewhere where he would start.

Won't happen (for that reason, at least. Only worry is acceptance, really. And even that's not terribly worrying.).

It's the equivalent of Brett Nottingham committing to Stanford in 2010. When Burns hits campus, Hogan will be a sophomore. Burns redshirts and Hogan's a junior when his eligibility clock starts.

all commentary from Burns is very positive on Stanford.  just need to get the good news from Admissions.

just judging from their comments and Shaw's, I don't think Hogan, Nunes, Nottingham or Burns is shy about competing.

Re: Class of 2013 - socalstanfan1 - 12-03-2012

I'm not worried about Burns coming to Stanford.  But I do wonder how the combined presence of Hogan and Burns would effect the thinking of Keller Chryst, yet another stud QB in the 2014 class.  While Burns can see that by the end of his redshirt year Hogan would likely play only one more season (assuming he continues to develop and becomes an excellent NFL prospect), so his situation could turn out well.  But, if Chryst figures Burns has 3 years of eligibility remaining after Chryst redshirts (and has the jump on Chryst in terms of being in the system a year longer), I could imagine that might give Chryst some pause, even if he is super competetive.

I was thinking about that too.  I will be surprised if we get both Burns and Chryst.

Re: Class of 2013 - yvonne - 12-03-2012

Maybe, but we can always point to the Hogan case and show Keller that a younger player will be given the opportunity to beat out older players.

Re: Class of 2013 - washingtonismoney - 12-03-2012

Ryan Burns made a big jump in Rivals -- from 63 to 43 overall, and he's now the #3 QB. Here's the Rivals' dude's take on Burns:
Quote:"Burns has the best combination of physical skills of any quarterback in this class when it comes to size, mechanics, arm strength, scrambling ability and accuracy," Farrell said. "The problem is that he runs a wing offense in high school and doesn't get to throw as much as many other quarterbacks. It will be a brobdingnagian transition for him from that to college football, especially at Stanford, but we can't ignore his physical skills."

Re: Class of 2013 - washingtonismoney - 12-03-2012

Can't see entire story, but ESPN says we lead for Jordan Cunningham: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/alabama/post?id=8747

Re: Class of 2013 - ahuang06 - 12-03-2012

Here's what ESPN has:

Quote:ESPN 150 wide receiver Jordan Cunningham (Davie, Fla./University School) is likely finished with official visits until after the Under Armour All-America Game.

...

“I think Stanford provides a lot of special opportunities and it’s the best of both worlds academically and athletically,” Cunningham added. “It would be hard to turn them down.”

Cunningham will make his final decision on the week of national signing day.

Re: Class of 2013 - StannyBoy - 12-04-2012

That was behind the ESPN Insider paywall. I don't think it should be copied word for word and posted here. Nothing wrong with summarizing or mentioning part of the article. Not sure what the rules are here or if anyone else even cares.
