Re: Admitted players - BostonCard - 01-23-2014

I'd be curious what each players' HOT score is (HOT = Hulk Offer Theory).  I forgot the exact scoring, but each offer from a decent school gives the recruit points; offers from elite schools are worth more points.  There are dangers involved (for example, players reporting non-commitable offers while others under-reporting, and some teams being offer whores while others are more, um, selective, but HOT has had a pretty good track record, as it represents the wisdom of the guys whose job is on the line to get recruiting right.  Usually a highly ranked recruit with a disproportionately low set of offers (Jamari Roberts is a good example) is set up to be a bust, while recruits whose offers exceed their recruiting profile (I think Jonathan Martin might be a good example), are often stars.

Historically Rivals has been the best. ESPN is quirky, but has three distinct biases: they take extreme positions on certain players, relative to the average (Jordan Perez is a four-star player on ESPN, for example); and they like players who play in the southeast and who play in the Under Armour All-American game (which -- surprise! -- they broadcast). Obviously, as you say, with personnel changes and just plain luck, those league tables could bounce around. Still, my favorite now is 247's composite rating, which combines the ratings of the four major recruiting services. Helps work out those uncorrelated errors.

(#1 in conference, #16 in the country by that rating.)

Austin Hall admitted, per his twitter: https://twitter.com/BigATHall/status/426865591324925952

Two admissions dings is quite a low number. From a cold-hearted "are we maximizing recruiting" perspective, you almost wonder...is it too low?

I like Hall's tweet after Casey Tucker committed last night: "Finally I'm not the only fat kid in my class!!!"

That's one way to look at it.  You could also make the assumption that our coaches and recruiters are doing a good job finding the players that will make it into Stanford, and they are conveying what the admissions office is looking for in a student.

Sure, that's a valid way to look at it. And I think they are, on the whole, doing a good job. But my philosophy is that if you're winning too often, chances are you're not setting hard enough goals. It's not as if Stanford filled its class, even assuming we sweep the remainder of the targets. So it's possible the coaches could've taken a shot with a few other borderline recruits and filled those scholarship. Don't know if any fit the description in this case; I just think it's something to ponder

Re: Admitted players - OutsiderFan - 01-24-2014

It takes two to tango.  Were there many more borderline recruits interested in Stanford, willing to put in the work and commitment, that were also deemed good enough football players?

Moreover, it does seem Shaw never wants to drop a recruit because something better comes along, as Harbaugh did.  He probably feels that if a recruit is going to take extra classes, etc. because Stanford says they want him, Stanford owes it to that athlete to honor the scholarship offer, and not pull it if something better comes along, as Harbaugh seemed to do.

On a related note, when's the last recruit admitted to Stanford that went elsewhere? The last one I can think of was Anthony Sarao after Harbaugh left.  I don't think Shaw has lost any admitted offers, has he?

Don't jinx us; we still have three accepted scholarship recruits who haven't committed, one of whom at least is still nominally a commit to Vandy.

Re: Admitted players - OutsiderFan - 01-25-2014

After sleeping on it, I now remember Winston was admitted and didn't commit.  That was Shaw's first full class.

Not "jinxing" anything here.  Thomas seems just as much of a Stanford lock as Schultz.

Alexander is the uncommitted/ admitted one most intriguing to me, because Stanford really struggles to pull guys out of the deep south who are coveted by SEC west schools.  It seems unlikely TA chooses N.D. over Stanford.  Ole Miss might sway him, but guys who visit on big visit weekend usually end up committing to Stanford.

I'm thinking Burkett most likely sticks with Vanderbilt.

Re: Admitted players - Bruce Wang - 01-25-2014

Here is a benefit to a high acceptance rate.  When coaches tell recruits their chances are excellent and have credibility saying that, recruits are more likely to make that extra effort.  Also they are more likely to commit early.

Re: Admitted players - Redrum - 01-25-2014

"But my philosophy is that if you're winning too often, chances are you're not setting hard enough goals."

Put yourself in the position of Admissions. The coaching staff is bringing you applicants that generally you're fine with and you already have cut athletes some slack when compared  to the rest of the applicant pool.  Then without consultation more applications that don't meet the standard you've been applying come into the office more frequently.  Are you more likely to accept those, or are you more likely to sense that [whatever sport] has: a) lost its bearings and the way to readjust them is to reject more.  b) worse, think that the coaches and athletics dept. is wasting your time, showing disrespect and trying to play you .  What would be your frame of mind evaluating athlete applications in the future?

Right now there is a kind of harmony and cooperation. Example;  because of LOI day deadlines,  scholarship athlete applications get to cut in line.  And, based on what leaks out from the Athletic Dept. side and the recruitnik world, guys who are close to the line get extra care in evaluation.  There is even anecdotal evidence that athletes who were very iffy spoke  with Dean Shaw and the quality of that interview/conversation tipped a decision in the athlete's favor.  As I write this reports are that Admissions is holding the process so a non-scholarship kicker's final admissions package (delayed by Midwest school closings) can be pulled together and submitted.  Our success rate is exactly that : success  and messing with it doesn't seem compelling.

One more note about Kirk Tucker. I'll definitely be rooting for him, but it doesn't look like he's got anything to worry about.

Good to hear.  Yeah, he's definitely been a class act the whole way.  Good luck to him.

I'm confused. I don't see where he committed.

No, I don't think he has committed, but speculation is that he will.

Re: Admitted players - yvonne - 02-02-2014

Yeah, he's retweeting a lot of Vandy tweets, so that's a fair guess. I'm glad he had a good visit.
