Re: ND-Stanford - washingtonismoney - 09-30-2014

Azia Kim was superior as she was a REAL fake student.

(One of my friends was an acquiantance of hers and described her as utterly unremarkable. The people who were most scarred by the experience was the staff of her dorm.)

Re: ND-Stanford - needle - 09-30-2014

I hope only real fake students are eligible for the Lennay Kekua Memorial Scholarship, should Manti Teo ever get around to endowing it.

Re: ND-Stanford Football Factory Accusations - thunder_chik - 09-30-2014

OK, just to clear up the "football factory" accusations, I checked with a website, databasefootball.com, to compare the number of ND guys vs Stanford guys who at one time have played at the NFL level...doesn't include currently active players (most recent listing was for 2008-2010), but goes back to the 1920s.  Can't vouch for the accuracy of the lists, but ND has had 494 players to Stanford's 199.
BTW, there is not a brobdingnagian difference in undergrad enrollments at the two (ND, 8371; SU, 6980).
Relative to much larger schools, I don't think either of us can credibly fling the term "football factory" around.  Let's save it for the SEC schools...or maybe U*S*C.

What does that have to do with anything? A school can have a good football team (and thus send players to the NFL) without being a "football factory". I use that term to mean that they're a football team with a school attached, not the other way around.

For what's it's worth, I experienced your initial posting in the spirit that you have described it.  I regret that the direction of this discussion largely turned away from an analysis of X's and O's, coupled with light-hearted jousting, and instead digressed into what I consider excessive bashing of ND and defensiveness about the attributes of Stanford.  Seems your postings hit some nerves, but I did not experience them as critical or worthy of such sensitive responses from my fellow alumni.  As a rule, I don't like it when the discussion turns to the attributes of my alma mater.  I'm proud to have attended Stanford, and I believe others hold the school in high esteem. Enough said.  I downright hate it when the discussion turns into variations of "our school is better than your school."  I always though we were better than that.

I would also like to echo the comments of a previous poster who has attended games at ND.  I have been to 3 or 4, usually with a blend of Chicago-based alumni from both schools, and I've always had a very pleasant time.  Those in green have always treated me very well, even as I am decked out in bright red.  I cannot remember anyone who was other than gracious in victory or defeat.  I love the ND campus; it's expanse reminds me of Stanford.  Though not Catholic, I think I would have had a very good experience if I'd attended ND.

I appreciate you sticking your neck out by posting on this site, and I regret that the exchange was not as pleasant or respectful of you as I would have hoped for.

As to Saturday's game: Go Stanford!!!

Thank you and i am glad that you have had a great time here!  Im sorry that it got away from the X's and O's!  I never wanted it to get into a my school is better than yours either, should be just a great football game!

Hope you come back to South Bend soon!

Re: ND-Stanford - jayasena - 09-30-2014

I'm in agreement with the spirit of DenverCard and Garvin's posts.

NDIrish, for future reference, don't go on a Stanford board and claim Stanford and ND are comparable as academic institutions. That's like one of us going on an ND board and claiming Stanford's football legacy is comparable to ND's. There may even be certain (contrived?) bases on which each of those claims could be justified. But just because one could doesn't mean one should. It's certainly not good form to go to someone's house and question what they hold sacred. And if you do, you should expect to get roasted.

Other than that, I have no problem with anything NDIrish has said.

*I mean no disrespect that the eternally mourned Lennay Kekua!  Does anyone know how her roommate took the news? Was she entitled to straight A's because she lost her?

*The wildcat was totally invented by satan and anyone who runs it is controlled by Satan! lol

*hopefully i can earn a clean slate!  I never remember calling Shaw an idiot and your qb a stiff, (if i did - i apologize, it was probably in the heat of the moment)  i just wanted to discuss if both qbs and both coaches where thrown into a pot, which combination would you pull out.  I like golson better than hogan for a college level (not pro)  and i think for the current game, based solely off of coaching, i would take kelly, but shaw is a top 10 coach for sure!  (sorry for the confusion!)

Understandable!  Will not do so in the future!  i have actually learned alot about Stanford and have earned even more respect for their academic achievements!

Can i ask, do you guys feel as if the requirements for the players to get in are on the same scale?  Not looking at the university as a whole, just for the players?  Cause my initial feelings are that they are, but please correct me if i am wrong.

Re: ND-Stanford - OutsiderFan - 09-30-2014

Not to actually talk about the game itself, but...

My strong feeling is Peter Kalambayi is going to be a giant pain in Golson's arse on Saturday.  Golson will not be able to escape his pursuit, and he will not dance around Kalambayi like he can the typically inferior athletes he usually faces.  Stanford's defense will be as suffocating as Alabama's was in the NCG.

That said, Stanford has played three games against physically sound teams lately, and lost all three, giving up 17, 24, and 13 points.  Though I'm perfectly open to the idea Stanford has the potential to score more than 24 points this Saturday, I'm not going to believe it can happen against a physically sound team until the offense proves it can.  Stanford seems more likely to score 13 than 24, so I have strong doubts Stanford will win.

Yes, ND can stand on its own without its football tradition, but without it it is much, much, much less well known outside Catholic circles (written as the Catholic I am.). Stanford, on the other hand, was much more well known even before its recent football resurgence.

I dislike a lot some of the comments made by Stanford fans on this thread.  I dont think you came in as a "common troll" but were open and interested in discussion and debate.  There has been plenty of that but too much mindless attack on our side, which I regret.  Yes, notre dame is too funny to drop, but some of the comments have been off base, including from some of our stalwarts.  You sound like you would be throwing punches before the game.

Notre Dame is a fine school.  Not Stanford but then few are.  Our granddaughter has been recruited by them.  Do we want her to go there?  No:  too far away from grandma and grandpa, and she would be shocked by the winter cold.  But other than that . . . She could do worse.

Too much of this thread has become, "my ding-a-ling is bigger than your ding-a-ling" and I hate that sophomoric display.  Even hated it when I was a sophomore.  When Hoover was the manager.  So stop already.

NDIrish, I appreciate you stopping by and hope you stay.  Being the first in my family to go to college, all my parents preached to me was, "go to college."  Every Sunday, in the Tidings we picked up after Mass, the back page, sports page, was only about Notre Dame and, once in awhile, high schools like Matre Dei.  My mother thought I Should apply there until she learned where it was, then thought otherwise.  Entering high school it was the only college I had ever heard of.  Ended up at Stanford.  All is good.

Welcome.

U$C, Michigan State, and U$C again.  ASU and last year's ND team were not as physically talented, UW was close, and certainly not UCD and Army.  UCLA is the last such team Stanford has beaten.  Oregon wasn't quite there last year either, given how they were also taken apart by Arizona last year.

I feel like you can't judge the academic qualifications for the entire university based off of one kid being fooled... just because he was dumb about that, doesn't mean he can't get it done in the classroom, so sorry that doesn't help me...

and before you go to the kids cheating, that is more of a sign of laziness then being unintelligent.  I was looking more for info on scores, gpa requirements...

Really?  Shaw is the perfect fit for Stanford, an alum, a great coach and a fine ambassador for the school.  the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends has been hit with nothing but scandal after scandal since Kelly arrived, he generally looks as if his head is going to explode on the sidelines and he seems much more like a liability to the school than an ambassador.  Kids go to Stanford because of Shaw; kids go to the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends despite Kelly.

I agree with Simas: the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends has not seen a defense like Stanford.  Golson better be every bit the QB you think he is, because he's going to be running for his life all afternoon.  The only thing that will keep the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends in this game is Stanford's red zone woes.

I expect a low scoring game with Stanford coming out on top 20-13 in OT.  Golson is turned back on 4th down at the goal line after he trips on a term paper someone was writing for one of the the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends players that was blown onto the field by the ghost of Teo's fake girlfriend in a valiant effort to aid the team of her former school.

OK, so i thought this would be a game where i could come to the opposing teams message board and have an actual discussion about the game and get into specifics, but apparently not.

To clarify, I have nothing but respect for stanford AND shaw.  I think he is a great fit and a perfect fit for Stanford.  But i was asking specifically about coaching techniques.  I think kelly has done more with less, but Shaw has been able to maintain what he has, so that is great to.

I was trying to keep this discussion about the game, but you can keep bashing ND for their mistakes, cause i am sure Stanford has always been perfect?  I guess their is no mutual respect between universities that have higher standards.
Don't be a martyr.  You'll have a fine discussion on this board with smart people, and they aren't bad people, they're pretty good folks.  But universities that have spotty disciplinary records are fair game, especially when their athletes invoke imaginary girlfriends who are Stanford students.

Separately, I would disagree with the above Kelly v. Shaw statement simply because Stanford cannot recruit a lot of athletes that N.D. can recruit.  With a much broader base, Kelly will always have the advantage.
What do you mean by broader base?  I would think that stanford would have an advantage in recruiting because of location and especially with all the problems at usc.  Its hard to convince a kid to spend his winters here compared to cal...  What kind of recruit can ND recruit that Stanford cant?  Unless you are talking about academics, which goes back to my previous question...

Re: ND-Stanford - Hulk01 - 10-01-2014

This thread is reason enough to ask fans of other teams not to post, and to politely ask them to leave.  It is almost impossible to find a signal in  this noise, and the attempt at discussion brings in the defensive, the self-righteous, the barely informed, the belligerent, and the inane.  Nothing here can settle the game's outcome and almost nothing here brings any insight to what that outcome might be, largely because the notion of an unbiased fan doesn't exist; fan, as almost everyone here knows, comes from "fanatic."

In a variety of ways, almost everyone looks foolish.

This poster included.
