Mick was being sarcastic.
My high school track coach ran on the relays with Smith and Carlos.  Great guy, learned a lot.  We were doing drills that were way advanced for high schoolers in the 1970s, like Gerard Mach's tempo drills (Polish sprinter, former Canadian track coach).  We were a tiny school (about 15 guys on the track team), but we were winning 4x100 relays with two sprinters, a pole vaulter and (no kidding) a shot putter.

That might say more about your league that it does about your team.

Could the shot putter kick?

Oh for sure.  Our league, Santa Cruz County Athletic League was not well known for sprinters.  The top CCS team this year is Bellarmine at 42.04, top California time is 40.81, national record is 39.76, we topped out at about 43.3.  not all that impressive.  We actually did have some very good sprinters (three guys who as juniors ran between a 9.6 and 10.1 hundred yards), but they didn't go out for track.  Their after-school activities were more centered in what Santa Cruz was known for in the late 1970s.

Re: Directors Cupdate - terry - 05-30-2015

UCLA lost today in the softball World Series and was eliminated. The Bruins will finish tied for 5th in softball, which is worth 78 Directors' Cup points. I thought UCLA had a good chance of winning its 113th national title, but it was not to be.

Poor things.

UCLA - updated through today's loss in softball

Men
SportFinishPoints
Water Polo1100
Soccer290
Football1067.5
Basketball964
Tennis964
Cross Country1856
Indoor T+F625
Current total446.5

Men can still score points in: Golf (minimum of 45 points for being in the final 30); Baseball (minimum score of 25 for lowest possible finish - 33rd, having won their first game - if they win tonight, that will move up to 50 points for a minimum finish of 17th); Outdoor Track and Field (unranked - didn't score in indoor.) Note UCLA may not score in 10 events for men if T+F does not.

Minimum score: 516.5. (With 45 more for golf and 25 minimum for baseball scored)
MAXIMUM TOTAL SCORE (with championships in all three sports): 746.5

Women
SportFinishPoints
Water Polo290
Tennis290
Softball578
Soccer573
Gymnastics768.25
Volleyball964
Golf1560
Swimming2351
Cross Country2747
Indoor T+F2845.5
Current total588.75

Women can still score points in: Outdoor T+F (Unranked).

Outdoor T+F will have to finish in 28th or better to displace Indoor T+F.

Minimum women's score: 666.75 (scoring 78 for softball)
MAXIMUM TOTAL SCORE (Winning outdoor T+F, losing points for Indoor T+F): 721.25

Minimum total score: 1178.25
UCLA MAXIMUM TOTAL SCORE: 1467.75

STANFORD MINIMUM TOTAL SCORE: 1409.5

UCLA has an elimination total of 58.25 total points.  Any combination of Stanford gaining points in men's golf, women's rowing (their boats are in the Petite Final in the 4 and II 8, and the Grand Final in the I 8 ), or either outdoor T+F, or UCLA scoring anything below a national championship in any of the four remaining sports, will narrow that margin.

UCLA is currently outside the top-15 in men's golf.  The elimination could happen as soon as tomorrow.

Great thanks VG for all you have posted on the Cup

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-30-2015

Also, UCLA baseball lost at home tonight in the winner's bracket game vs. the University of Maryland.  They will have to beat Bakersfield tomorrow at 4 pm for the change to face Maryland again.

Multiple ways in which this year's cup competition may end tomorrow.

UCLA only qualified in 8 events for the NCAAs in T&F, 6 men's events and 2 women's events.  There are lots of ways for a "team" to win with two or three superstars in track, but it is not possible for a team to win the meet participating in only 2 events.  And in those two women's events UCLA was 11th and 12th in the West Prelim, so they barely qualified. It is almost certain that the UCLA women will not event gather a single point at the NCAAs.  It is certain that they will not win the meet.

Most of the 6 men were not exactly top qualifiers, but in theory they could win the NCAAs if all 6 did exceptionally well at the meet.

My guess?  UCLA finishes 30th or so on the men's side and does not score at all on the women's side.

UCLA will not win on the women's side by participating in two events.  Now the magic number is 1, with the squad trailing in the standings losing 21-0 in baseball with 2 outs in the ninth.  If is not technically over, but it is over.

Re: Directors Cupdate - Viking_Guy - 05-31-2015

Stanford women's rowing finished 6th this morning, placing 5th in the I 8 Grand Final, winning the II8 Petite Final for 7th, and finishing third in the 4s for 9th overall.

Men's golf looks like they will finish approximately 23rd - they're in the clubhouse at +35.  Ouch.

Stanford

Water Polo372.5

Men can still score points in: Outdoor T+F (ranked 23 - would score roughly 48 points.)

Minimum men's score: 622.5 (scoring 53 for golf)

Women
SportFinishPoints
Water Polo1100
Golf1100
Swimming385
Soccer383
Volleyball383
Gymnastics575
Tennis573
Rowing672
Indoor T+F870.5
Basketball964
Current total795

Cross Country drops out.

Women can still score points in: Outdoor T+F (ranked 13 - would score roughly 63 points.)

Minimum score - 805.5

Minimum total score: 1428

UCLA has an elimination total of 39.75 total points.  Any combination of Stanford gaining points in either outdoor T+F, or UCLA scoring anything below a national championship in any of the four remaining sports, will narrow that margin.

So, if UCLA loses in baseball tonight, it's done.

Re: Directors Cupdate - FarmDad.01 - 05-31-2015

In the softball semifinals, UCLA blew a 5-0 lead and walked in the winning run in the 10th inning.

Re: Directors Cupdate - terry - 06-01-2015

Men's golf finished 21st, which is worth 53 Directors' Cup points.

In baseball, UCLA won on Sunday night to force another game. Tonight it's UCLA vs. Maryland, with the winner advancing to the super-regional against Virginia.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer team.  (Well...maybe it could have.)

Not quite a walk off pennant clinching walk. (1999 NLCS)
