Even if McCaffrey passes Sanders, the naysayers will argue that it took him two more games than Sanders. True, but how many other guys who've come along since Sanders have played 13 games and not even gotten to 3,000 much less 3,250? That list includes 7 WR/RB winners since Sanders: Desmond Howard, Rashaan Salaam, Eddie George, Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne, Reggie Bush, and Mark Ingram.

I think that's the best way to look at it. Sanders will have the record for average yards per game -- that might prove to be unbreakable -- but McCaffrey's total is still incredibly impressive, especially when you consider that list of players you mention.

From what I heard, it seemed ND sold out to stop the run, with 9 in the box and an array of run blitzes. Looks like McCaffrey did pretty well under the circumstances. Then again, Henry carried the entire load for Bama, and Auburn could do a thing to stop him.

This year's Auburn ain't this year's Notre Dame.

Yeah nearly 300 YPG is insane. BTW, none of those 7 other guys was even above 225, and McCaffrey is above 250.

I think these two records should be viewed separately as two of the most impressive offensive performances in college football history.

ND is a Top 10 team, Auburn was a .500 team only because they played 3 OOC cupcakes (Jacksonville St, San Jose St, and Idaho) and equally mediocre Louisville. World of difference.
Keep in mind that Alabama has played one team in this week's CFP Top 25 - ONE TEAM. Stanford has played SEVEN.

No doubt Sanders was a great runner, but his record is not necessarily more impressive than McCaffrey's as Sanders played much weaker opponents.
The SOS of Oklahoma State in 1988 wasÂ
-0.89 (75th of 105).
The SOS of Stanford in 2015 is
SOS: 4.48 (20th of 128)
I should note that I believe more yardage is being gained in 2015 than in 1988, which means that the his yardage would translate to more now.
Re: The Mac Meter -
winflop - 11-29-2015
I'm not going to argue for a second that what McCaffrey has done stands up to what Sanders did. But I think it's at least as good if not better than every RB/WR who has won the Voldemort since then.
And Henry has played against ONE current Top 25 team - and Alabama LOST that game.
Re: The Mac Meter -
pauloalto - 11-29-2015
Win,
Henry has played against both Mississippi and Mississippi State, gaining over 200 yards against Mississippi State. That's 2 top 25 teams.
Re: The Mac Meter -
winflop - 11-29-2015
Yep my bad. And if you look at the newer AP rankings, LSU has taken Mississippi St's spot in the Top 25. However, the larger point still stands. Henry has faced much less challenging opponents that McCaffrey

Henry is the best RB in the nation this year, statistically -- but McCaffrey has been a better overall player. McCaffrey has put points on the board in FOUR facets of the game: rushing, receiving, returning, and passing. Henry just has a boatload of rushing TDs.
I'm not a fan of the victim mentality to which we on the left coast can sometimes fall prey, but can you imagine if someone on a top-10 SEC team had McCaffrey's stats? He'd be a lock for the Voldemort.

Excellent point, TPotC. I'd love to see that question posed to some east coast/national journalists.Â

Here's the latest ESPN experts poll for the Voldemort:
http://espn.go.com/college-football/heisman15/
McC sitting at 3rd in a tight 3 way race for 2nd right now. Henry firmly in 1st place.
The conference champ games are certainly going to decide the top 3 order with Henry Watson and McC. I suspect Henry has already locked up 1st place though, barring some chaos.Â

If Florida wins and their defense shuts Henry down, then he won't win. The problem is that's not particularly likely.

The latest update. Too many superlatives to list here right now. Just take a look at these ridiculous numbers.
Christian McCaffrey's All-Purpose Yardage
Through 13 Games:
Rushing: 1,847 yards (24 yards shy of Gerhart's record)
Receiving: 540 yards
Punt Ret: 67 yards
Kick Ret: 1,042 yards (3rd in school history, 125 short of Owusu's record)
Total: 3,496 yards (1,262 yards better than Milburn's old record, a 56% jump. This would be like someone topping Barry Bonds's single-season homer record by hitting 113 home runs.)
Average: 268.9 ypg
NEW STANFORD RECORD
NEW PAC-12 RECORD
NEW NCAA RECORD
One note -- McCaffrey is now tenth on Stanford's CAREER rushing list, with 2,147 yards, and will likely move into eighth place at some point during the third quarter of the Rose Bowl.

Just a minor note. If Mr. McCaffrey were to repeat this performance in the bowl game he would end with over 2.000 yards rushing and over 4,000 yards all-purpose. Oh, and 3 - 4 passing, with 3 TDs. Wonder if he'll be any good when he grows up?
