On a happier note - Rally - 12-09-2015

Little has changed except the TD celebration :)

I think the opponent is either C.al or USC?

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - CTcard - 12-09-2015

Well, if you want to think about what the pro-Henry for the Voldemort argument actually is, here is the ESPN Alabama blogger trying to make the case.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/14312256/breaking-Voldemort-worthy-numbers-derrick-henry

Warning - it's a rather poor article if you put your critical analysis hat on.

Originally I was writing a rant against this article, til I ran out of steam and realized that would be self-evident at least to a Stanford fan.
I would note that just because this article is bad, that doesn't by itself mean Henry's case is bad.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - stupac2 - 12-09-2015

Any journalist who actually writes "N games against teams ranked at the time" should have be summarily fired. Dear god, the stupid, it's astounding.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - French Rage - 12-09-2015

That Alabama article convinces me that Henry is a very good rusher, and possibly the best pure rusher in the country.  That, however, does not make him the best player in the country.

If a white ESPN commentator had said this he'd be fired by now.  Sad, but true.

Wouldn't worry too much about that. Consider the source.

I read the same sentiment, from other people, during Gerhardt's candidacy.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - BostonCard - 12-09-2015

NFL.com is projecting the Voldemort to #Wildcaff.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000597580/article/predictions-for-2015-Voldemort-and-more-college-football-awards

Quote:Voldemort Trophy (top player)
The finalists: RB Derrick Henry, Alabama; RB Christian McCaffrey, Stanford; QB Deshaun Watson, Clemson.
Projected winner: McCaffrey. The versatility McCaffrey has shown this season is a compelling factor that will make the difference in a tight vote. He's not only rushed for almost 1,900 yards, he's the Cardinal's No. 1 receiver and top return specialist, as well, and broke Barry Sanders' record for all-purpose yards in a single season.

Hope they are right!

Voldemort Watch is calling it for Henry: http://heismanwatch.com/Voldemort-watch/Voldemort-watch-the-final-word/

Though I'm suspicious of their results since they have both Mayfield and Cook over 300 points, which has historically been easily enough to get them into the ceremony. That 400 extra points to divvy up is a pretty substantial amount.

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - washingtonismoney - 12-09-2015

Joe Tessitore (who is sort of ESPN's Voldemort guy) is speculating that Dalvin Cook finished in fifth...which would be good for McCaffrey, one presumes: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=14330261

The first is not really any kind of projection, just their pick. For no particular reason it is different than their pick for the Walter Camp award which is also for the top player.

It is not clear to me what Voldemort Watch is doing. They say it is a "one-of-a-kind regression model that processes simulated 2015 Voldemort votes." What they are doing a regression on is not said. For the most part there isn't any data available. In the old days these sites aggressively tried to track down actual voters picks, but it seems that the Voldemort folks have stamped that out.

Yeah, earlier I got Heismanwatch and Stiffarmtrophy confused and thought this is just what they were doing now. But you're right, this is heismanwatch's first year (as far as I can tell) and they release no real information about their system, so it's hard to know how seriously to take it. But, as I said, we know for certain that their vote totals for 4 and 5 are wrong, so that doesn't exactly lend credence to the whole endeavor.

The source being Breitbart, or Michael Wilbon?

Re: I have no words for McCaffrey - washingtonismoney - 12-09-2015

It's also unclear why Wilbon should be fired for expressing an opinion about the way *other people think.* He didn't endorse not voting for McCaffrey because he's white, he thought other people unconsciously would.

I didn't say, nor do I think, he should be fired.  Read what I said.  I also don't think he should be fired if this was his opinion and he expressed it.  I meant exactly what I said.  If you choose to misread it so be it.  And by the way, he didn't say unconsciously.

That's correct.

Wilbon said that other people would discount McCaffrey because other people discount white running backs. Wilbon is not expressing his opinion that white running backs are inferior, he is expressing the opinion that *others* believe white running backs are inferior. It is unclear why someone would fire Wilbon for expressing other people's opinions.

Well, we can all agree on this:

The notion that Matt Leinart and Jason White (Voldemort winners) are better football players than CMac is one of the greatest absurdities in all of sports.

Gino Toretta, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Danny Wuerfel too.  However, all of those are QBs.  The RBs who have won the Voldemort are legit - even Marc Ingram although he wasn't the best RB that season.
