Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - fullmetal - 08-15-2016

I can't access Youtube from work, but I can guess what that clip is :)  It's been all over the rowing media--those guys are a great story (one of the rowers at my club is Irish).

The brothers have a solid background of rowing and training together, so that helps immeasurably.  The US LM2x started rowing together about a year ago--(they agreed to co-locate geographically and structure their lives around training together), and so their results have surpassed what was expected of them.  The O'Donovans already had that technical chemistry, and apparently the aerobic capacities.  Glad to see them do so well.

Great picture of Katie getting Michael Phelps' autograph, 10 years ago!

While they're in Rio, they should re-stage that picture with Katie in the chair.

Didn't know I was that influential. ;)

Cool, but why does the URL imply it was a gymnastics story?

Kristian Ipsen places 3rd in the preliminary round of the 3 meter springboard diving.  Semifinals are tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.  Finals are tomorrow evening.

Well, it was bound to happen at some point. No women's beach volleyball gold this time. Not looking good for catching C.al in medals.

Helena Scutt, former captain of the Stanford sailing team, qualifies for the final race in the the 49erFX class, currently in ninth.

She's also an academic all-american and will be continuing at Stanford in graduate school in mechanical engineering.

Time to cheer for the Women's water polo team!  We should hopefully have 4 more medals, ideally gold, from that great effort!  None of their games have been close at this point.    Bummer about Kerri's loss.  How can they make them play after midnight!?  Go Helena!

Indoor Volleyball could be productive if the US can figure out a way to get past Poland.

Sweep!  Men's VB into the semis.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - DC 86 - 08-17-2016

Both indoor volleyball teams are on a roll with real chances to win gold.

Men: beat Poland (defending world champion, #2 in the world according to the FIBA rankings) 3-0 in the QF this morning. After losing their first two matches and looking flat they have won four in a row (including a must-win against #1 ranked Brazil) while playing with a lot of energy. Erik Shoji has been excellent at libero; Kawika Shoji doesn't play since he backs up the phenomenal Micah Christenson at setter.

Women: undefeated, playing Serbia in the SF tomorrow. They beat Serbia 3-1 in group play last week. The US front lines have been consistently strong, the rotations with Foluke at the net have dominated.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - FarmBoy - 08-17-2016

That was an amazing match. I hated Taylor Sander in college, but I'm loving him on the USMNT. And Shoji is getting much love from the commentators. Kawika did get in for the the last few points against Mexico when the US coach cleared the bench. At this point, the way they're playing, they've got to be the favorite to win, eh?

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - DC 86 - 08-17-2016

Sander's hitting percentage has been low but he seems to consistently come up with clutch plays when they are needed, and he is always firing up his teammates who otherwise are mostly cool/calm. His serving especially and his passing from the back have been strong too. The team is playing with tremendous confidence right now, they fell behind in the first two sets but came back to win both.

It's great that Erik is getting the love, he's not only covering a lot of ground and making some highlight digs but his passes have been solid even from tough positions.

US will play Italy in the final on Friday after beating Hungary 14-10 today. 4 goals for Maggie Steffens led the team again, and she also played strong 2 meter defense.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - 82 Card - 08-17-2016

Stanford's best chances to gain ground on C.al are the U.S. teams in MVB (2 Stanford, 0 C.al) and WWP (4 Stanford, 0 C.al). Stanford currently has 3 fewer gold, 3 more Silver and 2 fewer bronze. We need WWP to win gold. There may be other events that would change the numbers. C.al can pick up 2 more bronze in WWP

In any event, both schools have done extremely well. I'm not aware of another school that is even close. Congratulations to the athletes from both schools.

I generally watch the pin hitters, but Erik's the best player on the floor most nights.  He's the best libero easily in the tournament.  Micah is a superb setter, and Russell and Anderson are terrific pin hitters.  Still not sold on Sander, but he's playing better every match.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - DC 86 - 08-17-2016

More evidence of Shoji being the best libero in the tournament is that the US coaches assign him more responsibility than liberos on other teams. Watching the US you will see the other back line players wider and further forward in defense compared to opponents because the coaches have so much confidence in Erik's ability to cover more space in the back.

Christenson is not just a superb setter but an excellent server as well, could be the tournament's MVP if the US continues to play as they have been.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - BostonCard - 08-17-2016

Kerri Walsh wins the bronze medal by beating the other Brazilian team 2-1.  Though undoubtably disappointed at not winning the gold, medaling in four Olympics is nonetheless quite an accomplishmemt.

Re: Stanford athletes schedules & performances in the Olympics - DC 86 - 08-18-2016

All Foluke in the first set of the WVB SF, 5 kills and countless blocks (including three stuffs), even a near ace on set point that led to an easy dunk.

... and then she apparently suffered a knee injury, tried to play at the start of the second set, passed the ACL test but is sitting on the bench with a gigantic ice pack, return is "highly doubtful" according to the sideline reporter.

And a ridiculous record of only one loss in those four Olympics combined.
