Re: OSU-Stanford game thread - Hurlburt88 - 11-06-2016

I continue to cling to belief that our tackles will improve their performance, and snap issues will also drop.  In turn this can allow QB to have the time & plays to improve.  Even yesterday versus last week I thought the decisions to tuck & run were better . . . and with his strength we saw what an asset that can be.

Re: OSU-Stanford game thread - fullmetal - 11-07-2016

I don't think Burns is substantially better than Chryst to warrant another QB change.  I also think that David Shaw won't backtrack on his QB decisions unless injury is involved.  Having said that, Chryst has not been much better than Burns with a couple games under his belt...slow learning curve?  Or similar levels of play?  The issues I think I'm seeing don't seem likely to be solved any time soon.

Glad to see Shaw give the OL a lot of seasoning with all those run plays at the end...they probably needed that.  Sorry to hear about Fanaika though :(  (I didn't start watching the game until it came back to FS1.)  The injury bug has been rampant this season.

MacLovin looked really good out there--they seem to be at 100% for the first time since the early season.  Or maybe OSU is just that bad at run defense and tackling.  Whatever.  CMac looked really good again.

Dallas Lloyd...make that tackle :(  But Bolden Jr. was fast enough to beat Meeks, so oh well.  Great overall defensive effort.

Whoever heard of the first down chain breaking??

Are bad snaps contagious?  Which team did we catch it from?

On that 4th-and-goal failure--I like the decision.  But remember earlier when CMac took a toss play to the edge for 5 yds?  He's really fast, dontcha know.  The whole defense was stacked somewhat tight at the LOS on 4th and goal.  You think CMac couldn't beat out some poor OSU corner to the sideline pylon??  Or maybe you don't trust Chryst's arm when he throws underhand either...(the pitch/toss).

Speaking of which, yeah, I agree that backwards pitch draw is effing annoying.  Might as well direct snap it to the RB with the QB playing matador.

Back to the 1-yd plays, CMac through the air is just not a good play.  We had better be setting up to fake out teams later this season with those.  The zone-blocking-find-a-cutback-crease plays work better, imho.  MacLovin are fast enough to get a yard, plus you have the option of a QB keeper to pass or run (depending on who's blocking).  Well, I guess passing is out of the question these days.

If they ever put a sideline camera at the pylon for scoring review, that footage will not be available to the public for second-guessing.  I'm pretty sure the existing angle is there so that 1) the cameras don't ever get in the way of the ref, and 2) the public will never be able to truly second-guess the ref's decision.  Having said that, giving the refs a definitive view of the plane would be nice.

OSU is not a good team, so Stanford was supposed to look good.  It is a bit unfair of Burns to not have had a chance to warm up against not-awesome teams, but such is life.  Here's hoping we don't get into a track meet with the Ducks this week!

Re: OSU-Stanford game thread - BostonCard - 11-07-2016

I think the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, was the three interception, one fumble game against Colorado.  I think Shaw is perfectly willing to accept poor efficiency, poor accuracy, and that sort of mistake, but he is very intolerant of turnovers.  I think Chryst will be back there at QB for the rest of the year so long as he doesn't give the ball up.

Probably us.

Nice going round-the-horn here.

Mostly, I think Burns has been a slightly better (slightly less bad) passer than Chryst, though we have now had four games in a row with a PER under 100 with two from each. That's is historically bad. Don't know when we last saw that - possibly with Pritchard? Maybe in the bad years of the late50s/early 60s?

The run game has been better, and I just don't know how much of the credit for that belongs to Chryst. It would seem at least a little, as Chryst himself has had substantial run stats. Has he done a better job calling the run plays pre-snap? I don't know.

If you are including them both, then if is for the first time this season.

Quote:Or maybe OSU is just that bad at run defense and tackling.

Partly. But OSU's defense hasn't been atrocious this season. Going into our game, the advanced stats tended to have their defense ranked around the same as U$C and und, well ahead of the three teams left on our schedule.

Quote:But Bolden Jr. was fast enough to beat Meeks, so oh well.

On the one hand, such things are going to happen occasionally.
On the other, maybe we wait a bit before anointing him as best ever Stanford cb.

That play is great when it works, but it does have the potential to be completely blown up. There are no blockers on the play, it completely relies upon the defenses containment guy selling out to stop the dive. Otherwise, the back is tackled for a substantial loss (unless, of course, the back performs some amazing Houdini escape maneuver - which of course McCaffrey has shown himself capable of doing).

I don't think we ever do those on a 1 yard or less to go situation.
Maybe we should
... but there is more room for penetration to blow up the play in that case.

I have seen games with a camera looking right down the goal line. I don't know why that isn't always the case, but it seems it should be.

We won't - we can't. If Oregon is running track sprints, we won't really be involved.

I haven't seen much of a discernible different in passing between the two, but Chryst has shown to at least be the more productive runner. Plus he hasn't turned the ball over as often. Plus the offense is much more productive. How much of that is to his credit remains to be seen, though as long as it's occurring I see no reason to change. "The offense was stagnant, so we switched quarterbacks. Now the offense is humming, so let's switch back" isn't very compelling to me.

Re: OSU-Stanford game thread - CompSci87 - 11-08-2016

I finally got around to finishing watching the recording of the game on my DVR. McMaryion really should have been called for intentional grounding from the end zone for a safety with about two minutes left. He did take a couple of steps left before throwing, but he never went outside the tackle box and there was no receiver in the area. The ref announced "there is no foul for intentional grounding," but didn't say why.

Not that it matters. But seemed like they were just too nice to call that one.

There were several where the refs seemed to have a strange definition of being outside the tackle box.

Humming?  I guess, but kind of like one of those new super quiet dishwashers...

Well, compared to the previous stretch of games, I'd say the offense hummed. The 34 points against Arizona was the highest total of the season, and the combined 60 against Arizona and Oregon State is the most potent two-game stretch of the season.
