Re: Class of 2019 - OutsiderFan - 03-02-2018

I sure hope Austin Jones comes down to Cal and Stanford.  Would be really cool to have the two Bay Area programs go down to the wire with arguably the best player in the Bay Area.

Can't ever remember these programs ever battling with each other for the best player in the area. Did Trent Edwards even consider Cal?  Lorenzo Alexander might have been in the ballpark, but he wasn't admitted to Stanford.

It seems these boxes should be checked before offering anyone at this time of year for the next year's class:

- Has requisite GPA or is close
- Planning Spring OV and/or camping Summer before Senior year
- Planning AP classes in Fall
- Willing to enroll in January

It's frankly hard for me to believe the #1 ILB recruit in the country checks all those boxes.  But maybe he does, and the universe is aligning perfectly.

Another one should be
-Has a reasonable shot at getting an acceptable SAT/ACT score.
I think we have offered a couple of guys in the past with ACT's around 18. Thinking they are going to be able to get them up to 26 (or whatever we are requiring these days) is a bit delusional.

I'm unsure what his original score was, but didn't Ben Edwards retake the SAT/ACT 7 times before getting the needed score?

We've had player admitted with a 23 ACT.  Let's not exaggerate "requirements" here

Tough to exaggerate requirements when we're not really sure just what they are. The reason I threw out 26 was I knew a kid who was being recruited to Stanford and that was the number they told him he needed to shoot for. I'm sure it varies based on the recruit's other credentials.

Re: Class of 2019 - YA_TITTLE - 03-04-2018

Harbaugh bargained with the Admissions department to get 2 of his guys in per year, regardless of other credentials. Obviously, if someone can't handle the workload Stanford isn't going to be the best fit for them anyway.

Re: Class of 2019 - OutsiderFan - 03-06-2018

Let's not all start acting like Cal fans and think because USC offers someone, it puts them in the driver's seat.  A Stanford offer is far more valuable than a USC offer, both in terms of scarcity, and actual economic value.

Pakola should be considered the biggest uncommitted Stanford lock in the 2019 cycle.

If you're talking to a 17 year old about the future, it's critical to remember that their frame of reference is not the same as that of an adult, who has a lifetime of experience and bad decisions behind them.

When I was in high school, my father repeatedly told me it was important to go to college.  He hadn't graduated from a four year college and he was doing quite well financially.  I wanted to go to college on my own, but he never articulated why it was important to go.  A quarter century later, when my older son started to speak admiringly of people who had done well but hadn't completed college, I put it in a way that a 14 year old could understand.  We went for a drive and had the following conversation:

"See that mansion?  If you get A's and go to a great college, that's where you'll live.  If you get B's, you'll live in our house.  If you get C's or worse, that's the bridge you'll live under.  See that BMW you've been admiring?  Get A's and it's yours.  Get B's, and you get the minivan.  Get C's or worse, hope you enjoy the skateboard.  If you get A's, that's the woman you'll marry, etc..."

So when dealing with Stanford vs. U$C recruits, show them this:
https://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/best-schools-by-state/bachelors/california

Or use the national scale which shows Stanford at #10 and U$C at #57:
https://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/bachelors?page=101

Stanford, #3 in CA colleges for pay.  C.al, #7.  U$C, #10.  Yes, I know it's bogus.  Yes, I know it's statistically shaky. But I think it's directionally correct, and any teenager can understand it.  You can even explain to the football recruits that it's inaccurate and the disparity is actually greater...

Re: Class of 2019 - JohnR34231 - 03-09-2018

It would seem to me that some, if not most of the top recruits are primarily interested in a place where they can get early enrollment, early playing time, win lots of games, and have an quick exit to the NFL.
An elite education isn't particularly high on their priority list.

I think if they're talking to us at all, it's probably somewhere on their priority list.  And even if it isn't, future compensation is probably somewhere near the top of the list.
