Valenzuela won the NCAA regional and finished 10th in the NCAAs. Her recovery from a pretty awful accident is amazing.
Interestingly, the ASU coach asked her players in what position they wanted to play and in what position they did not want to play in the quarters. She set the pairings based on their preferences. She'll probably do the same for the semis.

All of the Golfweek writers picked Stanford over Baylor and ASU over Florida. 3 of the 4 then picked ASU over Stanford in the semis.

Another way of looking at the matchups, using national ranking:
Lee (2) vs Mahaffey (32)
Valenzuela (21) vs Vaughn (11, and medalist for the event)
Danielson (7) vs Zeeb (59)
Aubert (79) vs Litti (115)
Chou (124) vs Strom (9)

Afternoon matches are on the course. All are tight. It is critical that players stay focused as the day drags on. Fatigue will be a factor on the back 9. But the opponents will be tired too.
Lee is all square through 6
Valenzuela is 1 down through 5
Danielson is 1 down through 4
Aubert is 1 up through 3
Chou is all square through 3
Golf Channel live coverage begins at 1 pm pacific.

We have to hope for something to slow ASU down. Might as well be fatigue.Â

Could be the conditions too. Steady rain. In Ireland, they would call this a "soft day."

Vaughn, the medalist and Valeznuela's opponent, grew up in Oregon. The rain at RFF must feel to her like home.

Coincidentally, Vaughn is currently up two over Valenzuela, who gave up one stroke on each of the first two holes for an early deficit. Valenzuela cut that lead to one stroke on the fifth hole, but Vaughn took it back on the seventh hole.Â
Stanford's up 2-1-2 with Aubert and Danielson hold two-stroke and one-stroke leads over their respective opponents. As a team, Stanford is through holes 5-8 right now, still a ways to go.

Nasty weather and almost all of the players are in full rain gear, but Olivia Mehaffey (Andrea Lee's opponent) who is from Belfast is wearing what look like running shorts.

Holy crap. Chou just holed out from the fairway on #8.
1 up.

Chou holes out for an eagle on the 8th to take the lead in her match, strong start after a tough round this morning.
Lee and Valenzuela are both down two holes, Chou's match may be critical.

I hope that folks get a chance to watch the action on tv, either live now or on replay this evening. The quality of play for the most part is ridiculously high given the conditions and the pressure.

Lee now down 1.Â
Great fun watching

And Golf Network coverage is very good.
Chou wins the 9th and is up two holes at the turn, very impressive for her to play this well after some tough rounds in this tournament.

Danielson, Aubert and Chou all up by two holes in their respective matches now.

Play is suspended with thunder and lightning on their way to the area. Delay at least 30 minutes.
Lee is 1 down through 14
Valenzuela is 2 down through 12
Danielson is 2 up through 11
Aubert is 3 up through 11
Chou is 1 up through 10

Did they finish the holes they were on when play was suspended? Or is, say, Valenzuela on the green on 13 waiting to putt, or something like that? (I'm following along online, and I don't know golf very well anyway; forgive the question!)

When the horn sounds, I believe the players are required to mark their positions and move off the course.

Weather delays are certainly part of the challenge with this outdoor sport, but these ~5 days have been a bit much. It is a shame as the cold, rain, wind, tough course and now lightning make it hard to showcase what the college can players can do.

Rain is pelting the course now. Golf Channel is showing a lot of standing water on the greens (and the fairways and in the bunkers). The course looks like it drains pretty well. But I don't know if the maintenance crew will be able to make the course playable again today.
