RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - CompSci87 - 12-31-2018

ALL RIGHT NOW!

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - CompSci87 - 12-31-2018

Defense played great. Offense was terrible at first but improved as the game went on, and did enough to win.

Of course we got crushed on style points. Great win anyway.

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - Hurlburt88 - 12-31-2018

I did not see much risk in the reverse.   I suppose a fumble is possible, but more likely negative result would be loss if yards which is less important than keeping clock going.    And now in the future there is a seed in other coaches’ minds about what our options are during turtle time.

Yeah, defense played well.
Offense, well, we may have got a little divine intervention on the second touchdown, but I'll take it.

Yeah, I think he's going to stay now for another year.

Am I the only person who thought the reverse was ridiculously risky? Glad it worked out, but it seems like there's a much greater chance for disaster on such a call.

Anyway, I haven't seen a second of the Oregon bowl game, but the scoreboard shows they're losing 6-0 in the fourth quarter. Stanford ekes out a victory over a team that various posters on this board said was mediocre at best. Maybe the Pac is not too good at football.

No, not beyond the risk of a fumble somewhere along the line, which is probably only marginally greater than a fumble on a play up the middle.  And Wilson wisely slid after he got the first down.

As the announcers noted, barring something like a fumble, the worst thing that happens on the reverse is that it is snuffed out and Wilson is dropped for a big loss.  That's bad, but not the end of the world, as we basically weren't going to leave Pitt time to do anything with the clock.  Moreover, the reverse is a slower developing play, so it would take more time off the clock than a regular run play.  The only thing Wilson had to be mindful of was not getting pushed out of bounds (and not fumbling).

Have to assume trust in Wilson’s hands is high given he now is our top punt returner

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - newguy - 12-31-2018

and once again, the Cardinal DOMINATES!!!

There has to be a better option.  Wilson has no business returning punts.  Catching them, maybe, but he doesn't have the quickness to be a full-time punt returner. Maybe Wedington or Adebo would be better options.

It would've been Wedington, but he sat out the bowl to redshirt. Hoping in the future we see Nathaniel Peat or Marcus Graham back there

Also, Irwin was back there for much of the year, but of course he’s been out injured.

Of all the injuries this year, for some reason that one really saddened em.  I was really bummed out that he spent his last two games in street clothes.

Me too. I think his absence showed in the game as well. He would have provided a reliable additional target when things were not going well. We need receivers who can provide that that.

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - ChicagoCard - 12-31-2018

Me as well! I have really appreciated Irwin. Who will be in the slot next year?

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - PVTree - 12-31-2018

Anyone hoping to see Maddox get the ball a few more times? He seemed to be quicker and more elusive than Scarlett.

Awful game, but we got a win. That's better than the opposite.

He was ahead of Speights on the depth chart, which seemed unusual to me - but yes, he flashed today. Would like to give him a few more carries/game next season, which is very very possible unless Austin Jones is CMAC 2.0 (please please please please please).

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - French Rage - 12-31-2018

Yeah I've thought Maddox has looked pretty good in the past few games.  Interested in how they will work him in next year.

Shaw doesn't care about quickness, he cares about ball security. Scarlett returned kickoffs all year.

Was great to see him finish his career with a really solid game today. Shame he didn't get to 100 rushing.

Gutsy win with a limited roster especially on offense. That second touchdown ranks right up there with the Fumblerooski.

Is this insider knowledge that he's not returning? He has 1 year of eligibility left and presumably would start next season.

You think Scarlett forgoes his last year of eligibility? I do hope Speights, Maddox, or a frosh wins the position, but Scarlett does offer positive value to the position.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed that none of the receivers who are going to be around next year were able to do much.

RE: Sun Bowl Game Thread - OutsiderFan - 01-01-2019

Costello had a terrible game and he played without 5 starters on offense, and 6 after Hall went down. Hard to really blame the young WRs too much. Even JJAW couldn’t reel in any 50-50 balls that have become his trademark because Costello was just a bit off, quite possibly due to windy conditions especially in the first half.

And please give me a break with the “Shaw doesn’t care about quickness” claim. It may well be that Shaw values sure hands more than quickness, but one of the ways to win football games is with quickness. Shaw wants to win football games. So you could say Stanford doesn’t have many quick players with good hands and be on to something.
