RE: MBB recruiting - BobK - 01-03-2022

Okpala was ranked 27and 30 in the country. Maybe you know Hasse was recruiting him as a soph but Okpala was certainly well know by his JR year

Not to disagree with any of your other points

I just checked his ESPN recruiting page and it said #44. Maybe we're using different recruiting outlets.

But I do agree with you that he was well known and there was buzz around his name coming out of high school.

I am less surprised only in the sense that Haase has actually had a pretty good record of shipping guys off to the NBA, and for someone like Carlyle, I assume his top goal is to play for a year (or maybe two) and then go pro. The chance at a college title is always less than certain, even for a defending champ, but the 40 year decision is something he can always fall back on. Still, I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't end up at Baylor.

Williams had a short, COVID-marred, and lackluster career at Stanford.  Did Haase make him a lottery pick, or did he already have the talent/potential coming into Stanford?

Haase has coached two other NBA players -- Terry and Okpala -- but both were second round picks.  He also coached several other highly rated recruits at Stanford who transferred out and don't seem likely to make the NBA (Travis, Ryan, and Davis).

That track record doesn't strike me as being that great, but I'll acknowledge that it's incredibly difficult for college players to make the pros, so I'm curious whether others here think that Haase has been good at developing talent for the pros.

Davis and Reid were grad transfers so they don't really count against a coaches "transfer record". Ryan on the other hand is a transfer. So, one transfer during Haase time at Stanford is not bad at all. Tbh Ryan isn't even doing that good at Notre Dame coming off the bench. He listed playing in a more uptempo offense and more pt for the reasons of his transfer but Notre Dame runs a veeery slow offense and not a lot of action.

The three players that were drafted are still in the league which is great and Ingram will definitely be drafted if he enters this year or next year (I hope he stays one extra year to develop some more). Terry is having some off the court issues so I'm not sure which team will pick him up after his 10-day contract with Memphis. Okpala has been a steady bench player for Miami his whole career. Btw KZ was #44 out of high school and he's doing good in the NBA.

You have to give Terry and Okpala some credit for being second round picks and still being in the league. How many first round picks from their draft classes are listed on a roster?

Also, if a 5 star recruit comes to Stanford he knows he'll be the focal point of the offense and be starting from day one instead of heading to a loaded Duke team where he might be coming off the bench for 10 min a game.

I'm not sold on Ingram as an NBA lock, though apparently he is pretty high up in some draft predictions (#15, I read, according to someone on TOS).  Ingram looks like a tweener who does not have either the elite athleticism, nor the elite shooting ability to be a player (i.e., starter or regular bench player) in the Association.  Hope I'm wrong and that Ingram enjoys wild success in NBA.  Just an having a hard time seeing it.  [Of course, I could be subconsciously biased, inasmuch as I'd love to see Ingram be a very-good-to-great 3-year college player for Stanford].

Okpala surged late in his high school career; when Haase offered him he was more of an unknown quantity.

That said, while Haase seems to be an estimable recruiter, ultimately it's all about wins and losses. And there he's unsatisfactory.

More on Kanaan Carlyle from 247sports:

According to the above article, KC's decision is still between Stanford and Baylor. No crystal balls on 247, but as of 9:45 am on decision day Rivals has 5 FutureCasts for Stanford.

Stanford in the Ivy League? Was there a change I've missed?

Good get. Haase can at least recruit. . . .

RE: MBB recruiting - Papa John - 01-05-2022

All right now, Kanaan!

cardcrimson, way back in the 1980s the Stanford Bookstore sold a t-shirt that read "Harvard: The Stanford of the East." So by that (il)logic, you could call Harvard a Pac-12 school or Stanford an Ivy League school.

RE: MBB recruiting - BobK - 01-05-2022

Outstanding get for Hasse and Stanford

RE: MBB recruiting - martyup - 01-05-2022

Right on!  And . . . better than Ivy.

I was on campus in those days and remember the shirt. Surprised they're not still around.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, 40 year decision carries weight even with probable one-and-dones. (Though he may be slightly overstating just how magical it is to have Stanford on your resume, LOL)

Haase has great recruiting ammo: he has shown you can be a one- or two-and-done from Stanford. We have had 3 of those in a row (and Ingram could potentially make 4). Plus, the reality is the NBA doesn't give a shit where you go to school if you're a 5* McDonald's All-American recruit. They already know about you.

I'm very selfishly in favor of allowing the "magical Stanford resume mystique" to persist, and hope it works for me!

How do I generate generational money after being a degenerate in my early life?

Just your early life?  Don't sell yourself short.

Cheers,

THIS * 1 BAZILLION.

He's a great recruiter, I think arguably on the same level as Monty if not higher. But he can't get the whole to be greater than the sum of the parts, and continued mediocrity is unacceptable.

I’d say he’s a better recruiter than Monty, given that he can’t sell “you’ll be on one of the top teams in the country and make the tournament every year” the way MM could.

The chasm between recruiting results and on the field results is surprisingly large both ways.
