1) Cam has to be a focal point of the offense and step into the role of being a legitimate threat all the time (i.e. no more games with 4 shots). This is a big step for her, it's happening, and I give her and the coaching staff credit for evolving. The other players have to adjust around that. It may mean less/no playing time for the other bigs. But it's necessary for the team to be great. Cam also has to stay on the court. Looks like she's learning how.
2) Lacie needs to be the point guard (yes, this is my opinion and others feel differently I know). I won't elaborate any more as to why because I already have and don't want to sound like a broken record. For me, the decision isn't even close.
3) We need to have Jump and others (today Demetre) hit threes. I think this is beginning to happen. We know Prechtel and Wilson can and will deliver from deep. I also think we'll get 3's from Cam and the Hulls, and maybe even Haley too as the season progresses. With Cam being more of a threat down low and being a good passer, we'll get more open threes (a la her passes to Demetre and Lacie today). That is so tough to guard. Either double her and we get a 3 or don't and see if you can stop her with one defender.
Some of the issues we've seen so far will simply go away on their own over time. They will start making their free throws at a reasonable %. It may not be 75%, but it will be more than 60%. Haley and Lexie will also return to their former selves (actually I'm kinda worried about Haley). When these things start to happen, we will be beating teams like Texas and USF by double digits. (South Carolina is another level above though. Gonna be tough to take them down, especially at their place).
My biggest question is can the players hang together through all this churning and find their on-court chemistry? This is not easy, for coaches or for players. But I do think Tara excels in this area and the players do trust her. They also benefit from knowing what it takes to be a champion. Not sure there's a better coach out there to handle such a large roster.
Stay tuned for a fun year. Really psyched to see what tomorrow will bring.
I have grown to really appreciate your posts. I think you have captured my sentiment too.
Over the many years I have been a fan of Tara and WBB, there have been countless moments like this one where I did not understand coaching decisions that were made during a loss. Quite often I never learn the reasons behind some of those decisions, since the program holds its cards very tightly to the vest. But on those occasions when we do learn the reasons--as used to happen from time to time at chalk talks, or at press conferences, or from players after a season was over--I have invariably been satisfied that the coaches knew more than I did. I have hard Tara take the blame for some bad decisions--she truly has no ego problem with admitting mistakes--but the depth and reason behind her decisions is obvious on those somewhat rare occasions when she explains them. So like any fan I question decisions, but I also remain humble, knowing that there almost always are good answers.
And so I remain very optimistic about this season. I think we will lose more games along the way, but I think the team will solve its issues and jell in time to win the Pac 12 and go on a tear through the NCAAs.
Think of what we have already seen the last couple of games. Brink is on the verge of becoming a dominant player, perhaps on the order of Chiney. Demetre showed nerves of steel coming into the game and confidently hitting her shots when we were coming from behind. And she is a freshman, and yes she made a couple of critical freshman mistakes, but we now have seen a glimpse of where she is heading. Belibi had a fabulous first half against one of the nation's top teams yesterday. These splashes of success will not go unnoticed, and will be seized upon by Tara and integrated into the future of the team.
Finally, perhaps also the team is reacting not only to the loss of Williams, but--if we take Brewer's article seriously--to the accumulated stresses of winning a national championship during the worse pandemic of the last century. Conditions this year are radically different from what they were last year, and the emotional roller coaster has not come to a halt yet. Consider that our sophomores and freshmen are about to take their first in-person exams in college, in about a week or so. There is something to be said for the accumulated normalcy of a routine, which will settle in after Fall quarter.

1. I'm with mbdude and CardFan10Fan on NOT being a fan of the quick triggers from Tara. Especially since it's applied in inconsistent manner (it's that kind of stuff that breeds claims of favoritism). The truth of the matter is this: you can put any 5 players on Stanford's roster (assuming normal distribution of guards and posts) for 4-7 minute stretches, and they would be fine. These are all highly regarded hoopsters. They just need confidence to play well; and it's impossible to develop confidence if you think one mistake is going to lead to an immediate pull.
2. Not sure how you can be so certain that Lacie is the best answer at PG when we haven't really seen other options (most notably JVG).
3. On Haley, I also entertained notion of "the yips" as possible explanation. But you can "play through it" in 20s of minutes (not 30s).
4. I actually think the team will be good, including in March. But you have to let the kids play, including through a mistake or two. If everyone knew on the floor knew they'd be in for 4-5 minutes, minimum (barring foul trouble or something extraordinary), the quality of play would noticeably improve. That's my firm belief, but it will never be put to the test.
5. Cam is a good shooter. How she clanged those 2 FTs (missing badly) in 1H was/is a complete mystery, and a pretty strong sign that things are just off right now.
P.S. I'm not worried about Lexie . . . unless she starts getting tugged early and often from the floor. That will mess with anyone's game, including a 4-year starter and vital piece of a national championship team.

@teejers
Not sure how you can be so certain that Lacie is the best answer at PG when we haven't really seen other options (most notably JVG).
I'm certain because 1) The coaches are certain, and they are at practice every single day. No knock on JVG, she's obviously a good player to be on this team and I think she can still be vital as a junior and senior. But she's obviously not showing the coaches she's the better choice. If she was, do you think the coaches are playing mind games or something? Of course not. They would put the best players out there. 2) JVG seems to me like she's a really good floor general, but she's not going to come in and give us a major offensive boost. If you agree with that, then it's about "the other stuff", which Lacie wins hands down. 3) Lacie has 2000 minutes of experience going into the season. Jana has 250. It's just a big advantage. 4) Lacie is longer, stronger, more athletic, and more versatile.
Now IF Lacie had been a turnover machine, and we needed someone to get the ball up the court, then by all means the door is open. But so far, so good (enough).
On Haley, I also entertained notion of "the yips" as possible explanation. But you can "play through it" in 20s of minutes (not 30s).
Agree! Something is not right here...Seems like 20 minutes would have been better.
I'm with mbdude and CardFan10Fan on NOT being a fan of the quick triggers from Tara. Especially since it's applied in inconsistent manner (it's that kind of stuff that breeds claims of favoritism)
I think Tara pulls all her players for things like fouls, turnovers, not rebounding, etc. But I've come to appreciate that the best players (e.g. Jones, Cam) get more rope in certain instances. It took me a long time in my basketball world to get there, but somewhere along the line I accepted that it's correct. As a coach, you don't have to treat everyone the same.
That said, I'm worried about chemistry too as you suggest. While I do think that Tara can keep them together, it doesn't always work out. Players can get upset about things like this and start taking it out against each other and then the whole thing can come unglued pretty quickly.
The truth of the matter is this: you can put any 5 players on Stanford's roster (assuming normal distribution of guards and posts) for 4-7 minute stretches, and they would be fine. These are all highly regarded hoopsters. They just need confidence to play well;
I'll give that to you against cupcake teams, but I don't believe that for one second against stiff competition. I've been around many basketball parents who, when their kids aren't playing, say things like "other than so and so, and so and so, the rest of the kids are mostly the same. You could put any of them out there and we'd be just as good." It's so wrong. You can't just put 5 bench players out there, even our talented Stanford players, or you'll see the scoreboard against Texas, South Florida, Gonzaga, etc. start to quickly go in the wrong direction. I agree, our underclassmen are very talented. But talent is only part of the equation. They also need the mental makeup (to pick up the complexity of the system) and emotional maturity to play. The mental and emotional side is a big part of development and it takes awhile for 18 year olds to get there, even though they've been high school stars. Experience is important.
Backatcha @81Alum. I appreciate all your preview posts and our other insights as well.

Yes, yes, yes, couldn't agree more. We all get to question coaching decisions and for me that's a big part of the fun. But I don't think for a second Tara is making knee-jerk decisions that are non-sensical. There's a level of complexity, especially with such a brobdingnagian roster, that I can't even fathom. Her choices are all informed by a lot of information none of us have (e.g. what's really going on with Haley. She knows, we don't). I also find that oftentimes folks don't really give enough credit for what goes on at practice. That's where players earn PT and earn the trust of the coach. Her comment about Kiki's missed dunk really hit home. <paraphrasing> "We'll have a talk about that. I wasn't happy. What she doesn't get is that her job is to earn my trust. That play didn't do her any good. Make the layup." It doesn't matter how many recruiting stars your profile had or what # in your recruiting class you were. Gaining the trust of the coach is everything when it comes to getting on the court.

been reading all these comments and I too am perplexed by the poor play - in particular free throw shooting (which hopefully some psych and practice will help). Baffled, and frankly hoping that Haley doesn't have something like shin splints or plantar fascitis. IIRC, when I had both you could work out (run) but needed to do it for significant amounts of time or would be quite painful. Then again she does not seem to show any limp or stiffness when just walking around so hope that is not it. Yes, I wish Tara would give even rope but she is the expert.

The UCLA women just lost to previously 2-4 South Dakota State by 10 points. SDS had 10 players score, the highest being 11, with 4 in double digits. Talk about balance!
At least we lost to a good team. South Florida is up to 22 in Massey ratings. We are down to 9 prior to our Maryland game.

No, not every foul for every player results in a substitution, but most do. Key players are more likely to be left in. Specifically, the point guard (Ros) was typically left in.

The number of fouls that a player has is important information here. A player who picks up their second foul in the first half is likely to get pulled at the next opportunity, same when they pick up their third or fourth foul depending on how much time is left. A player being pulled immediately after committing a foul isn't necessarily punishment, but often is sensible game management.
Every coach has favorites (and the opposite), but usually those players have justifiably earned that status.

I think the whole conversation about Tara pulling players too quickly when they foul, as if this is some kind of punishment for the player, is completely off base.
It is my understanding that Tara pulls players after they foul not to "punish" them for fouling or even to teach them how not to foul (although that might be a side benefit) but because statistically it is far more likely that they will pick up a second foul quickly if left in. Once a ref starts watching a particular player, they often call two fouls in a row. Taking the player out--even if only for a short time--breaks that ref's immediate attention to that player.
The players must know this. It is in their own interest to come out of the game after each foul to stop the refs watching them too carefully.
This is just another example of what Tara knows that most fans do not. She was deeply into analytics before that became a word in basketball.

There is absolutely no ill will — I love my teammates and the Stanford program. I just wanted to try something new, something out of the state of California.”

Okay, BC, whatever you say.
P.S. Out of curiosity, did you attend any of the games at Maples the last year Carrington was on The Farm?

Out of curiosity, why do you ask?
Judging by your posts mentioning "WBB" or "Carrington", it seems you started
commenting on WBB in Nov. 2019 (Carrington's last month of playing at Stanford).
Out of curiosity, did you attend any of the WBB games during Carrington's career before her last year on The Farm?
If not, then you saw at most only her last 4 games at Stanford. And further, you came to
conclusions about Tara's substitution patterns by your 2nd or 3rd game. You continue with those opinions it seems.

Oh for goodness sakes. I've been attending Stanford women's hoops games for a loooong time (20 years, at least).
And that's all I'll say in response to your ridiculous post . . . okay, I lied. If you had attended games, watched what was happening in the games, watched what was happening on the bench, and recall the whole scholarship situation when it came to Carrington's last year of eligibility, you might have questions yourself.
But whatever. Tara is a Hall of Famer. She never makes mistakes. Everyone is happy all the time. Blah, blah, blah.
Look, it can be equally true that Tara is an awesome coach; Stanford was and is lucky to have her; and certain players have ended up in her doghouse for whatever reason. Why is that so hard to comprehend or believe?

Re Tara's doghouse, this I agree with. And, it's not all that unusual in team sports of any kind. Also believe the s'ship situation described above occurred.
