Interestingly, this doesn't bother me at all. Of all the Stanford-->Notre Dame grad transfers, the only one who left on bad terms was Thompson, and she barely played any minutes in Blue and Gold. All the others - Sniezek, Dodson, and presumably now Brown - are getting the opportunity for more playing time than they'd be getting at Stanford. In each of their cases, they've been recruited over by better players in their positions. And in every case, they endured chronic injuries while playing for Stanford and have been given the opportunity for a new start and a better finish to their time as a student-athlete. I'm all for it, and wish Brown the best.

If anything, the only thing about the Domers that annoys me is that we didn't land Miles. Had we, I genuinely think we'd have had very good odds of a second national championship either this past season, this coming season, or the 2023-24 one, because the only piece we've really missed in this era is a top shelf PG.

Good for Jenna. Still believe it’s for grad school
ND now up to 7 players for next season including incoming Frosh.
Good news bet Jana doesn’t go there

RE: WBB transfer portal - BACardinal - 04-26-2022

I think we all could have guessed that is where Brown would end up. She was committed to ND and then flipped to Stanford at the last minute.

What the h@#$ is happening to Oregon State?  What has gone wrong for Rueck?  There were always aspects of his personality I did not care for, but he seemed like a highly successful coach who had taken his team from the cellar to the top.  But his players are acting like the wheels have fallen off.

My sense is that Rueck has a bit of Mike Montgomery in him - he doesn't suffer fools well, he seems happier trying to win with the scrappy players rather than managing expectations for five star recruits, and he prefers a slower, high-ball screen scheme on offense that doesn't showcase certain kinds of players. I generally find his system to be smart and he's a good strategist in-game. Although I appreciate the thoughts above about his blow up with refs, I have to be honest when I say that I'm surprised that more Pac-12 coaches haven't had spectacular meltdowns given the dearth of quality officiating in the league.

It seems evident that some of the recent higher profile players Rueck recruited didn't buy in to his system and are departing; on the other hand, some players seem very committed, including Van Oelhoffen. OSU has a couple of genuine players coming in (Gardiner and Beers). I've seen Beers play. She's just what Rueck needs: a big body, screen setter to run pick and roll with Van Oelhoffen. Beers and Gardiner strike me as both high IQ players.

I do think that COVID made team-building very difficult for a lot of teams, and we are seeing a perfect storm where the transfer portal has opened up easy switching, players have a COVID year to burn, and there seem to be a lot of homesick players returning to teams closer to home.

So, I think for a lot of teams including OSU and Oregon, rebuilding the team is as much about rebuilding team culture as it is staffing for the roster departures. Some Pac-12 teams seem to be doing this better than others.

Any chance Kampshroeder is interested in Stanford?  Maybe she wants to be a big PG a la Jeanette Pohlen.

RE: WBB transfer portal - WBB fan - 04-26-2022

I'm a bit hazy on some of the transfer portal rules. Can a player who enters the portal change her (or his) mind and say, nope, I'm staying with my original team?

RE: WBB transfer portal - BobK - 04-26-2022

Yes they can change their mind.
Love ftom Arizona to usc
Watson from Oregon to ND

As long as their original team is willing to take them back, which isn't always the case.

RE: WBB transfer portal - BobK - 04-26-2022

DC is right of course in fact looking at several rosters those in the portal are no longer on the roster

RE: WBB transfer portal - jonnyss - 04-26-2022

Two good pickups by ND from the transfer portal, so far, in two former Top 20 players in PG/SG Jenna Brown (#18 in 2018) from Stanford and PF Kylee WATSON (#17 in 2020) from Oregon.

ND now up to 8 players of note for next season:

F/G - CITRON  6'1   (11.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg as freshman; #16 overall from Class of 2021)
F - WESTBELD  6'2   (11.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg as sophomore; #20 overall from Class of 2020)
F - WATSON  6'4  (transfer from Oregon, #17 overall from Class of 2020)
F - MARSHALL  6'5  (#34 overall from Class of 2020)
G - MILES  5'10   (13.7 ppg, 7.4 apg, 5.3 rpg as freshman;  #8 overall from Class of 2021)
G - BROWN  5'10  (transfer from Stanford, #18 overall from Class of 2018)
G - BRANSFORD  5'11   (#29 overall from Class of 2022)
G - MABREY  5'7  (10.3 ppg as senior)

I have to admit, I have a certain liking for the ND WCBB program.  They actually have the 2nd best overall result in WCBB in the 2010s (after UConn and just above #3 Baylor and #4 Stanford), having been to 7 Final Fours resulting in 5 national runner-up finishes and 1 national championship from 2010-2019.

And I just absolutely love that MILES/CITRON freshman tandem from last season, definitely the best freshman tandem in WCBB

I think the above-mentioned 8 players for next season is enough for them to be a national Top 15 maybe even Top 10 team (depending on what BROWN, WATSON and BRANSFORD can bring to the table) and Top 3 maybe even Top 2 in the ACC

RE: WBB transfer portal - BobK - 04-26-2022

Ladine signed with Washington in November

RE: WBB transfer portal - triangle2 - 05-01-2022

Kampschroeder to Michigan, continuing the trend of west coast portal entries returning closer to home.

RE: WBB transfer portal - TheFarm07 - 05-01-2022

Owusu to Virginia Tech

RE: WBB transfer portal - Jskass - 05-01-2022

Bummed on Kampschroeder but perhaps just impossible to transfer in (undergrad, not admitted to grad) since no one transfers out so I was naive in hoping she'd see the error of her ways and end up here. Good pickup for Michigan though.

RE: WBB transfer portal - BACardinal - 05-01-2022

Former Cal commit, Lauren Fields, transfers from Oklahoma State to Arizona.

Former USC player Shalexxus Aaron transferring back to the Pac-12 from Texas Southern to Oregon State.

RE: WBB transfer portal - BostonCard - 05-01-2022

I hope the NCAA does a deep analysis on the impact of the changing transfer rules on the well-being of athletes. I have a feeling that although there’s no doubt that an individual cases ability to transfer is important, on the net, It is a negative.

The NCAA is not going to change the transfer rule back. That is not even being discussed. It is here to stay.

RE: WBB transfer portal - BostonCard - 05-01-2022

That’s why I think they ought to do an impact assessment. It’s entirely possible that I am projecting my general discomfort with it, and that an analysis will show that the changes are to the benefit of most student athletes. But I think that it is important to try to determine what the impact of the transfer rule changes have been.
