Total team play across the entire roster today. When you are dropping a -4 score you're playing well. I'm sure the boys are giving Thor a little ribbing over that.
Stanford is 13 shots above the cutline to qualify nationals. However, with the course playing this easy, they are still going to have to play well tomorrow because you never know how many teams are going to go on a birdie binge tomorrow - even if they toughen up the pin placements.

Dang it! We had our worst day of the tournament, and the Solar Satans passed us to take first place by 2 strokes.

"Worst day of the tournament" was still -15 as a team (with all 5 players under par). ASU just put up a big number (-21) to pass Stanford for the regional trophy.
But the real objective was to play well, finish top 5 and advance to Grayhawk. Check, check, check. Stanford should take some confidence into the NCAA championship which will start a week from Friday. I think that Coach Ray will be pleased with this result. Still a few things to clean up.
Final Team Results
1. ASU -59 (!!!)
2. Stanford -57 (!!)
3. Virginia -49
4. USF -45
Final Individual Results
4. Ng -18
T5. Thorbjornsen -15
T15. Brown -11
T21. Menon -10
T30. Vilips -7

Shall we start with the doubles and triples? Villips had 2 triples, and a double, gave back 8 strokes over 3 holes and offset 8 of his 21 birdies. Now, match play is another game. In match play, concede the hole and move on
Eng on the other hand had 4 bogies over 54 hole, 1 eagle and the rest birdies and pars. That kind of play will win you a lot of match play rounds.
Thor and Menon were also pretty consistent in limiting scores over par. Easy to say and hard to do, the guys played really great golf.

I think it's actually really difficult to translate much about how they played at an easy course in Bear's Best compared to what they will do on a very challenging Grayhawk Talon course. Also, keep in mind that they have to finish in the top 8 in the first 54 holes of stroke play to qualify for match play, in which it really can be a bit of a crap shoot.
The rise of Ethan Ng this year is a very positive development, while Brown and Vilips' play has been on the disappointing side. All will need to play well to make the cut.

On a challenging course like Grayhawk, just playing par golf and keeping the big numbers down will be really important. Last year as I recall no team was under par, and the top teams were around +15 for the stroke play part. Par golf would probably get you into match play.
One last add. I look forward to the NCAA Golf Championship more than any other sports final game. I don't think there is a tougher format to get through in order to finally win the overall championship. Golf as a team game and in this format is so much fun to watch. I wonder what the rest of you think?

In the years that Stanford wins the stroke play and loses in match play, I hate this format. When it's the other way around, I love it.

I love love love the NCAA golf championships too. It reminds me of my high school golf experience which I remember with great fondness. I will watch whether or not Stanford is playing. But it's a lot more fun when they are. I am planning now to attend next year when the tournament moves to La Costa in north San Diego County. I've attended twice before at Riviera and Karsten Creek.
The Stanford men have been very successful at advancing to the NCAA championships in the last 10 years. From 2011-12 to 2021-22, the team made the NCAA championship 8 of 10 years (no tournament in 2020). But they have a mediocre record at NCAAs. They have missed the 54 hole cut 6 of 8 times. The only times they made match play were in 2014 at Prairie Dunes where they lost to Oklahoma State in the semis and 2019 where they won it all at The Blessings.
I hope that the team will play up to their potential with resilience and mental toughness. It's going to take a lot of both. This *is* a veteran team with 2 juniors (Thorbjornsen, Vilips), a senior (Brown), a 5th year (Ng) and a 6th year (Menon). Thorbjornsen, Vilips and Brown all have international match play experience (Palmer Cup, Walker Cup, etc.). They should not be fazed by the setting.

Any championship where Stanford is involved is interesting to me.
But I hate the switch to match play in the middle of the championship. It's just a way to introduce randomness at the very end of the tournament. It would be like baseball, after playing the entire season with cumulative scoring, suddenly switching to inning match play halfway through the playoffs. The Giants could lose game seven for the National League pennant with a total score of 20-5 by outscoring the hated Doyers 5-0 in four innings and being outscored 1-0 in five innings, thus losing the match-play game and pennant because we want randomness at the crucial portion of the playoffs. Ridiculous.
I will be watching or following the scoreboard at work as long as Stanford is in it though.
Cheers,
Pete F.

Pete - match and medal play have both been in use for golf championships for 160 years. They are both legitimate and recognized forms of competition. In baseball, there is really only one way to play.
I think that match play was added primarily for television. The Golf Channel would offer money to televise the event if it could be assured of more drama to keep people interested. As a bonus, the final day of stroke play and the 2 match play days are on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when Golf Channel is not televising pro events. A win-win for them. The fans have loved it. It's been so successful for the men (who started playing this format in 2009) that the women followed suit 6 years later in 2015. In the 7 years since then, 6 different schools have won. The men have had 10 different schools win in 13 years. In short, I think the medal-match play format has been great for growing interest in the game.

Personally, I think the format makes for the most challenging NCAA Championship possible. Golf is a very tough mental game at this level. The match play portion puts a little more mano a mano element into the mix. You can give you opponent a two footer on one hole, then later when things may be tighter, you make him put the two footer. There is a lot to like about match play. I have no idea how the players feel about it. It is also part of Country vs Country matches etc. I think TV likes match play also.
RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -
winflop - 05-18-2023
Initially I didn't like the combo format but I have grown to like it. To make it to match play you have to play well in stroke play, and match play definitely is better suited to TV, especially with the "drop one" format in college stroke play that is always hard to follow on a broadcast.

As we wrap up the women's golf season, our attention can shift to the men. They will be competing for the NCAA championship over the same course as the women (though playing about 900 yards longer and a par 70 vs. 72 for the women) and under the same format.
The men play a practice round on Thursday before teeing it up for real on Friday. They are the #6 seed and will play in the afternoon wave on Friday then turn around and play in the morning round on Saturday. The stroke play goal is the same as for the women - finish in the top 8 after 72 holes and advance to match play.
Stanford's lineup will be the same as it was at regionals:
Michael Thorbjornsen
Karl Vilips
Barclay Brown
Ethan Ng
Nate Menon
Dean Greyserman (alternate)
All of them have prior NCAA experience. Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown and Ng played Grayhawk in the NCAAs last year. Menon played a round as an alternate at NCAAs as a sophomore in 2019.

Scoring will be "live" at

I think it's going to be a challenge for the men's team to make the final 8, but I think they can do it. After that, as we saw on the women's side, it's a bit of a crapshoot. I think it will depend more on how Ng & Menon play rather than Brown & Vilips, but we will need 3 of their 4 scores to be solid. Thor is Thor, and he's deservedly up for some of the top awards in college golf.
RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -
Spiny_Norman - 05-26-2023
The goal for the men's golf team is to be in the hunt after round 1, say top 10. Their history at NCAAs recently (except for 2019) has been to shoot themselves out of contention right from the start.
The team is in the middle of the front 9. No one going low, but no one blowing up either. Everyone has at least 1 birdie on the card. They need to get through the 7th hole without too much damage. It's a converted par 5 playing as a par 4 and is the 2nd hardest hole on the course. The hardest is 18, another converted par 5 playing as a par 4.
The team leaders after the morning round are Georgia Tech at even par and Pepperdine and Arkansas at +1. Given that the golf course usually plays faster and harder in the afternoon when the wind picks up and the greens dry out, team scores around par should be pretty competitive.
As I type this, Stanford is at -1. You can follow the scoring here -

Stanford faded on the back 9, going +8 on the final 4 holes. They posted a score of 290 (+10) tied for 19th place for now. As in past years, the team will be playing from behind to try to work its way back up the leaderboard into the top 8.
The Cardinal was led by Barclay Brown who shot a strong 68 (-2). He got no help from All American teammate Michael Thorbjornsen who did not play like an All American. He shot 77 (+7) including a double bogey on 18. Nate Menon also had a 77. Karl Vilips bogeyed 2 of the last 3 holes for 72 (+2). Ethan Ng shot 73 (+3).
Among the top 10 teams, only ASU shot a worse score than Stanford.
Stanford plays early tomorrow starting at 6:32 am when scoring conditions may be a bit better. Still, it's going to be tough for Stanford to recover from this round.

As poorly as they played down the stretch, they're only 10 shots behind first place. The leaderboard is very crowded and tight. Should be more separation today. Fingers crossed our boys play better.
Stunned to see Thor's score being dropped, especially his +5 on the back nine. Didn't see that coming. However, I still think that Ng & Menon's play will determine whether we make the cut to the top 15 and whether we finish in the top 8 and qualify for match play. +2 and +7 isn't going to get it done. Those two need to play better
RE: Stanford MGolf Thread -

Well Stanford s*** the bed on the back nine today. Thor had a decent round going until he made a TEN on 18. Yes, +6 on a single hole
Brown & Vilips have been solid but that’s where the compliments end. Ng & Menon are not delivering and Thor is a mess
Can they crawl back into the top 15 tomorrow? Sure. Making the Top 8 for match play is still possible, but only if they play much better tomorrow & Monday

Two days in a row and our best player shoots the drop score. Hard to do well under these circumstances.
