Larry & Norm Sherry? Dodgers in 1959.

Just checked out 1959 WS box scores. Larry Sherry was the Series MVP, getting 2 wins and 2 saves in 4 relief appearances.  But John Roseboro was the Dodgers catcher.  Norm Sherry only played in 2 games in the 1959 season (his first of 4 seasons with the Dodgers) and was not on the WS roster.

In San Francisco HS baseball it’s Frank Bertaina, Sacred Heart 1958-1961. Undefeated.

Frank was a good pitcher, averaged 8.7 hits given up per nine innings in his 6 year MLB career.  If he'd had enough innings, that would have ranked him in the high 490s, among MLB pitchers.

RE: Sports Trivia 2023 - Phogge - 01-15-2023

Mort and Walker Cooper formed a battery in WS 1943-45. Also were mates in the ‘43 and ‘44 All Star Games.

Mort and Walker are in my Very Good Hall of Fame.

I thought the Malone Character was based on Bob Murphy. Danson did go to Stanford lol

Phogge's right, it was Sudden Sam McDowell.

Which MLB pitcher has the most career balks with 90? Which pitcher has the most in a single season?

Hints:
1) Two different pitchers, but their careers overlapped.
2) They both played on the same team once.
3) Both spent at least one season in the SF Bay Area.
4) One's a Hall of Famer.

RE: Sports Trivia 2023 - Phogge - 01-16-2023

Career is easy... Steve Carlton. Single season????

In over a dozen years in college and semipro I had one called. Runners at first and third, step off, fake to third, wheel and toss to first. Absolutely legal. Third base ump called it and I went thermonuclear. First time ever tossed.

As a pitching coach way later in life when many of the players were entitled I had a kid who called an ump “Blue.” The old umpire immediately tossed him. I told my staff that if they want to argue a call begin by saying, “Sir.”

Steve Carlton is one.  (I’ll go with career) Classic balk move. Also picked off a lot of guys.

Edit - I looked it up after posting. I was right on Carlton being career leader. Surprised by season leader. When others weigh in and somebody gets it, I’ll fill in the backstory. Very interesting. I remember it. Interesting stuff.

RE: Sports Trivia 2023 - Phogge - 01-16-2023

I'm going to make a wild guess of Dave Stewart. After all he balked on a hooker one night.

1988.  “Year of the balk”.  MLB made  coming to a complete stop a point of emphasis: “A single complete discernible stop. With both feet on the ground.” Stewart broke the season record by May. Bob Welsh is second all time. Also ‘ 88.  Rick Honeycutt had 4 in a 4 inning relief appearance. Bobby Witt had done that a couple days earlier.

The top 17 team balk totals in baseball history are from 1988. They called over 900 balks that year. Changed the rule the next year.

Phogge, great get. Carlton was easy. Never would have thought of Stewart.

Mick... just google Deadspin, Dave Stewart.

Phogge, I never had the experiences you did at SFSU, but I tried out for the baseball team my junior year at SCU. Two of the pitchers that I played with that spring were Pat Larkin and Roger Samuels, both lefties who ended up having a cup of coffee with the SF Giants. Larkin had this indecipherable pickoff move, and he was almost never called on it in college but once he got to the pros, especially the bigs, he didn't get away with it much. He got called for two balks in 10 1/3rd innings pitched, then he was gone.

Samuels is literally gone, just passed away from kidney cancer. Also had a good pickoff move, not quite as many balks as Larkin.

RE: Sports Trivia 2023 - Phogge - 01-16-2023

We always gave SCU trouble although I was 0-2 vs. Pitched fairly well though. They had just lost Garibaldi, Fazio, Boccabella and Cullen. We finally beat them at Buck Shaw junior year as Don Elam beat Jan Dukes (Washington Senators). That team had Vince Bigone, Bob Spence and the Strain's. Dukes had beaten Wally Bunker in a 14 inning game in HS and the only other Bunker loss was to SI in 1963. I had a two inning save. Just over a year later Bunker won 19 games for the Orioles and in 1966 shutout the Dodgers in the World Series. Then he got hurt.
