Ugh, Huskers goal on a free kick with less than 3 minutes left. 1-1. Now going to overtime.
But goal Maya Doms in overtime! 5:46 left in the 1st OT. 2-1 Stanford
Stanford wins! On to the College Cup. (2-1 as predicted. Boy that was nerve-racking!)

2nd OT. Stanford need to focus and not allow another late silly goal

Congratulations to Stanford Women's Soccer! Headed to North Carolina next weekend for the College Cup!
The game winning goal in OT was a thing of beauty. You will have to watch it several times to figure out what happened. Stellar play.

Make that 3-0. UNC is dominating every aspect of the game. Game not over yet but it will be Stanford vs UNC

Yes, beautiful play. As someone who knows nothing about the sport, it looked like the Nebraska goalie was out too far from the goal.

I don’t fault their goalie too much there. She is expecting an Aikey shot, not that slick flip behind her.
Overall, the team played well but didn’t finish very well. Especially Kitahata. Obviously a bad Campbell error on the goal. Nebraska was comprehensively outplayed, but had some threatening moments.
- the left side struggled some today in general
- Doms and Aikey were flipped a lot today. Not sure why? Too many Doms turnovers? Just shaking it up?
- my question on space ended up answered as we pushed them so far back most of the time it wasn’t an issue
- I thought Harvey was pretty good today
- Montoya needed to pull the trigger faster a couple of times today
Watching UNC now and yeah BYU is not having a good day. However, the UNC goals have all been garbage. First was a lollipop header on a corner over the post defenders head, but the goalie just watched it go in. Second was off a BYU defenders backside deflection after a bad turnover. And the third the goalie misjudges a well hit FK though from a wide angle and it bounces off her hands in. The UNC wings though have caused a bunch of problems for BYU, and BYU has really struggled defensively all over.
The next game is going to be at a whole next level. We have had it pretty easy up until now.

Byu comes back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 in regulation including 3 goals from the 81st to 89th minute to win! brobdingnagian collapse from unc.

UNC was better in the first half, but 3-0 greatly flattered them. 1-0 would have been more in line with the game at halftime. I will have to ponder BYU in more depth now when I had been focused on NC given the score. But the NC midfield just imploded in the second half. BYUs problem with the NC wings vanished because NC never had the ball to get it forward. Again just a total midfield wipeout in the second half. Dorrance proves he is a dinosaur and deserves to go extinct.

Wow what an incredible comeback by BYU. BYU was down by 2 goals with less than 10 minutes left. BYU scored 2 goals in less than 2 minutes apart to tie the match. BYU with the game winning goal less than 2 minutes left.

A lot of North Carolina fans who had bought tickets for the College Cup in
Cary, NC (assuming NC would be playing there because of historical entitlement) will now get to watch Stanford vs. BYU.

What are the chances we beat BYU?

I'm not shedding any tears for UNC's Anson Dorrance after his comments back in August:
"We've built the best women's soccer conference in the country and there's no way I want to share the glory of our conference . . . . And so basically I want Cal and Stanford to die on the vine."

Yes remember him saying that
Would love to see him eat those words, first doused in ghost pepper sauce of course

BYU is a quality program. They have played in the College Cup more recently than Stanford. They lost the national championship two years ago on penalty kicks. And they eliminated Stanford last season on PKs.
This season BYU beat UCLA and USC (both matches at home). Stanford could only muster a tie against those schools (though both on the road). It should be a great matchup. And we will get to watch it without needing an ESPN+ subscription.

BYU has a potent offense. Their 3 goals late in the match happened when UNC “parked the bus”. Always a good day when UNC is defeated especially in women’s soccer. I wonder what defensive strategy coach Ratcliffe will employ.

I will honestly guess 50/50. Massey had us 2 spots higher. RPI had them 4 higher. Both had every team in the College Cup in their top 6.

So I rewatched the second half of BYU vs. UNC and I am revising some of my thoughts.
UNC was in a 4231 and BYU in a 442 diamond.
- UNC never really parked the bus but maybe should have. The striker was isolated sometimes but UNC was still able to have some possession and get forward some.
- again maybe too much forward. Goal 3 for BYU incredibly was a counter attack.
- UNC was defending with the midfield too deep and too narrow much of the half.
- BYU mostly went around UNC, not through the midfield’s center.
- goal 2 - the Olympico - the GK clearly was fouled and it seemed to break UNC.
- UNC’s issue was more losing marks or losing specific battles than the tactics/formation, though again the midfield was often defending too deeply or too narrowly.
- I still think Dorrance is a dinosaur.
So this is my only BYU watch
- counters and set pieces are concerns
- the strikers seemed very dangerous including the sub - Walbruch?
- several subs overall made an impact - they are deeper then we are.
- they have 5! Double digit goal scorers. We have 2. Our defense has to hold up.
- mozingo and Kayla are very good in MF.
- the outside backs were very key getting forward and around UNC
- Texas Tech had way too much of the all Big 12 first team (5 players).
