Rose who…?  (Just kidding, of course)

Can you spell “dynasty”…?  (Not kidding at all)

Stanford has made the match play round (final 8) in nine consecutive NCAA Championships. In 7 out of the 9, they have at least advanced to the semifinals. 3 national championships, 4 championship match appearances. Already a dynasty.

Heck made it look easy out there.  But wow, match play can be so-o-o nervewracking to watch.  Congrats Card!

What a team what a win. Especially happy for Heck.

Thrilled for the entire team but especially for the seniors Heck and Englemann. What an incredible legacy they leave over their 4 years! 2 national championships, a semifinal appearance, a quarterfinal appearance. And they leave the team in great shape, handing off to Xu and Ganne, neither of whom lost in match play. The future is bright, but the present is even brighter.

Spiny -- Thanks for all of your good women's golf posts this season. I really appreciate it!

The first one was the sweetest. Stackhouse going birdie-birdie-par, bookended by the shot of the tournament on 16 and an awful miss on the first playoff hole by Baylor's Hayley Davis. Just an amazing sequence of events.

I've jumped up and down over three Stanford Rose Bowl wins,
but I've never been as affected emotionally, by any Stanford event,
as I was by seeing Rachel Heck win the key and final match
of this tournament.

You have a good point. When Rachel, so classy and understated, including when acknowledging her opponent, gets to her teammates just off the green, she bounces up and down. It seems involuntary and unconscious. Just pure uncontrollable joy, with no artifice. So happy for her.

Many stories of endurance through misfortune, though admirable, do not have happy endings. But some do. That was special.

What a great person to be associated with our beloved university.

It was a great moment to watch the last hole.  I think we also need to give some credit to Coach Walker for keeping the team together and having them ready for this moment.  This last clip says a lot as far as I am concerned.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twHJKq70nz4

It's going to be hard to top the emotions of this year's victory.  Losing Heck and Engleman is a blow but we gain 4 of the top 10 women's golf recruits, with what some are calling the best overall recruiting class in women's golf history.

Considering that today is a new world in college athletics, I cannot help but wonder how things will play out for the Stanford Women's Golf Team.  The Stanford site shows 8 players on this years team, and three will leave, leaving 5.  We get 4 more very highly rated players, leaving us with 9 going into next season.  Playing 5 and counting 4 means more than one very good player is going to be sitting out tournaments.  Will they stick it out and work even harder like Rachel or move on via the portal.  It may prove that one one can have too much of a good thing.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - BostonCard - 05-28-2024

A little late to this party, but happy for the women's golf team and their many fans on this site, and particularly for Rachel Heck, who overcame so much just to be there (including having a rib taken out last year for thoracic outlet syndrome) and her poignant blog about why she is not turning pro (https://nolayingup.com/blog/why-im-remaining-an-amateur).

Quote:It’s hard to imagine how it will feel to put my clubs away at the end of the season. How will it feel to stand over my last putt? How will I feel waving back to my teammates one last time? I still look forward to playing amateur events and, hopefully, many more USGA Championships. However, it will be undeniably different. Taking a step away from the game that has given me everything has been a gut-wrenching decision. To say golf has given me the most incredible memories is to minimize the experiences I ask God every day why I deserve.

I mean, how cool is it that her last putt clinched Stanford a National title?

A few other miscellanea:
Stanford won the Pac-12 title, its regional, the stroke play portion (tied, but had the tiebreaker) and the match play.  To win a national title, you have to be both good and a little bit lucky, especially in match play, and Stanford was very good and a little bit lucky.
How about Kelly Xu, who went 3-0 in match play, and won each match decisively (4&2 in the quarters, 3&2 in the semis, and 4&3 in the finals)!  By my count, across three matches, she only lost 7 holes!
In addition to Xu, Ganne went 2-0 (and was leading her unfinished match by 2 holes with 3 to play), Heck and Engleman went 2-1.  Only Martin Sanpedro struggled in the match play, ending 0-1 with 2 unfinished matches (one in which she was down 3 with 3 to play, the other one she was tied).  But Martin Sanpedro finished 3rd in stroke play and was instrumental in winning the stroke play tournament.
Overall, we went a pretty incredible 9-3 in match play, with 3 unfinished matches (in which we were leading in 1, all square in 1 and trailing in 1).

As much as luck is a factor in match play, this team did its darnedest to minimize it.  I don't think Stanford trailed the championship match after Ganne took the 5th hole, and we had a 2+ hole cushion for the entire back 9 of 3 of the contests.  Epic comebacks late happen (eg Mariah Stackhouse), but Xu, Ganne, and Heck were very much in control of their matches.

So again, congratulations to the women golfers.

Do I recall that during the tournament there was a mention of another woman golf player  also choosing not to go pro?  IIRC, there were discussions between her and Rachel.

Here’s a story of a top-10 women’s tennis pro (30yo) retiring before people expected
https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/articles/cg66kd6wlveo

It further points out that even if you are or could be successful as a pro, that might not be your goal, especially if you consider the impact on your body.
