Harrison wanted a Masters in a subject she couldn't get at Stanford.
Keep in mind that LOI day is at the Start of the basketball season. So if someone gets hurt during the season or near the start that they can redshirt, we may have already filled the 15 scholies allowed. Ruef was coming back for her 5th year, paying her own way. Then both Beebe and Kokenis retired opening up scholies for both Reuf and Roberson.Â

At the time, Harrison would have had to sit out a year if she transferred to another school unless it was to complete a degree that Stanford did not offer, in which case the NCAA waived the requirement to sit out. Transferring to an out-of-conference school was not enough to avoid the year delay (Utah had not joined the Pac 10 yet.)
I don't think that rule still exists, or else it has been substantially liberalized.

You are right on all, but Harrison's desire was to focus on was not offered as a Masters at Stanford. Yes the rule has changed, thus far more taking advantage of it.Â

A little more information about
Dijonai Carrington, although nothing more about where she might go:
Dijonai Carrington tore her ACL her sophomore year but led her high school team to a championship this last junior year:
http://hs.utpreps.com/news_article/show/487581
Prospects Nation upgraded Carrington's ranking:
Quote:Earlier in the spring we saw great improvement in the game of Dijonai Carrington, the 5-11 wing from San Diego, Calif., and that continued from the Check Me Out SoCal Showcase in April through USA Basketball U19 national team trials, leading to her move up to No. 14 in the class.
http://prospectsnation.com/story/2016-elite-100-spring-expansion
I can't find any more recent of
Celeste "C.J." West than this article, which says every Pac 12 school is interested in her and that she will visit 5 of them this (last) spring. Anyone know if she visited Stanford? That would be a bad sign, I think, if we were not among her 5 spring visits.
http://www.bakersfield.com/bakersfieldlife/2015/02/27/all-star-athlete-c-j-west.html
Nothing real recent on
Anna Wilson, but there are these that I don't think I have linked before. She joined Boo William's travel team to "up her competition." Tara and Tempie went to watch her in April. She talks about her academic focus.

And here is a roundup on
Mikayla Pivec, who sounds like a really likable kid:
Quote:Shes productive, unselfish and likeable, a 4.0 student who scours craigslist and swap meets for trading cards and runs cross country and track primarily to share the experience with her younger sister, Malia.
http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/high-school/lynnwoods-mikayla-pivec-crafty-on-and-off-the-court/
Quote:Several colleges have shown interest in Pivec, with Seattle University, Washington, Washington State, Nebraska, Oregon State and Stanford at the top of her list. Each of those schools, except Stanford, has offered her a scholarship, though Stanford has asked her if she would like to make an official visit.
http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20150314/SPORTS01/150319548
Quote:According to Pivec, she has received offers from about six schools that she has really communicated with. This list includes Washington State, Washington, Seattle, Nebraska, Oregon State and Stanford. Ideally, Pivec is looking for a program with a winning culture, a close team atmosphere and a strong academic university, she said. While she there are family ties to some of the schools, they will not be a factor when making her decision, she said. Id like to stay on the West Coast or as close as possible, but if a school had the best opportunity for me to play I would consider going a little bit farther away, Pivec added.

Earlier this week Carrington tweeted that she achieved her ACT or SAT goal after several tries.Â
Neither West or Carrington are here on Oregon but I'll see Pivec and Aaron and James all same team today. Also a 6-5 player who just finished her frosh year. Â

Posted about Pivec in the 2017 tread, but she's on our radar for 2016.Â
No more news on Carrington.
I learned form an insider while watching the games in Oregon that we will LOVE Alanna Smith. Pac 12 coaches had been thinking they are gaining on Stanford then many of them saw Smith or video and said Oh Oh. She's the real deal.Â
That said McCall was the 2nd leading scorer and rebounder in our recent World University games Championship. She could play the 4/5 with Johnson, Kaylee at the 5/4. McCall did that with Tennessee's Russell in the tourney.Â
No big acceptance tweets and Wilson still our only commit.Â

I
can imagine Tara requiring a higher standard than the "average" Stanford requirements. She may feel that the load of playing on the WBB team and being a Stanford student may be too much for an "average" Stanford student. She may require that if she is going to give out one a few precious scholarships to an as-yet-unproven student, she wants to feel confident that the student will handle the combined load. She might even feel that academics comes first and she doesn't want to ever have to have to tell a scholarship player to cut her commitment to BB in order to improve her education at Stanford.
So, for Tara, she may happy to have a walk-on that is average among the elite students at Stanford, but she may not have been willing to give a scholarship to that person. I'd think most really good prospects would choose another school that would give them a scholarship.
I don't mean to say that WBB is more demanding than any other sport or extracurricular activity, just that it does add to the load on a student. Football, because of its greater number of scholarships, may have more scholarship room for a few students that don't make the combined load. It would be interesting to know if other coaches (any sport) at Stanford or elsewhere also restrict their scholarships to prospective students whose academics are above the school's normal requirements.
(Yes, a prospect's academic record at high school was while participating in athletics. But the time spent on the sport in college is usually greater than it was during high school.)

Thank you Bob for being our eyes and ears on the summer circuit! That is exciting to learn that other coaches are fearful of Alanna Smith! I can't wait to see her play. And McCall has certainly had a nationally-worthy summer. I do wonder when we will start to get some more firm commits.

Those are interesting points you bring up. Too bad there's not hard data or anecdotal evidence to prove one way or another the differences between the various sports at Stanford, since there are other sports where we do get pretty good recruiting classes on a consistent basis.

Maybe Alanna Smith can be a player that we can build the team around, but if she can be a solid offensive threat and McCall translates this success in the summer to the college season and McPhee and Karlie can nail down that 3 spot, despite losing Amber, Bonnie and Taylor, we can have a good 2015-16 season. (I know, a lot of ifs).

Get our regular season conference title back and retain our conference tourney title...a deep run in the NCAA tourney, Sweet 16 at least, maybe Elite 8.
Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting -

I'd agree with Farm. I'm past the point of expecting a national championship without a lot of luck, but I do think we should aspire to dominate the Pac-12 and to get to the final 4 each year. That said, I would say that last year was a good year relative to the changes in personnel and to talent levels. But while last year was a good year in relative terms, it was not a good trajectory in absolute terms. I don't want to get used to losing the regular season title, nor to being out of any realistic consideration for the final four. That needs to change.
Re: WBB: 2016 Recruiting -

OK, just to keep the list up to date, with the news about CJ West, that brings the Cardboard list of 2016 recruits we have discussed here and who might still be in contention to come to the following:
Anna Wilson (committed)
Dijonai Carrington (injured)
Mikayla Pivec
Again I remind everyone of Tara's recent track record of announcing recruits that are off the radar and were never discussed on this board, such as Coffee. Sniezek was a surprise to us, as was Kaylee Johnson. In short, we have been predictably terrible at figuring out who our recruits will be. The most we can say is that these three remain possibilities.
I will say this--it is getting very late for more news not to have come out. Usually we know more about who our recruits will be at this time.
